20gb RAM is such a stupid number to see plopped in there

    You crazy?

    That's hyper X ram.

The only downside is the possibility of having the Chinese send a spec op ninja squad into your home to steal parts from that pc. to use in the worlds next most powerful computer.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I really don't like those cases. Very... not exactly untidy, but higgledy-piggledy looking.

They're cool but just so absurdly exposed to the elements, makes me feel highly uncomfortable. Can just picture a moth drifting in there some evening and...

A friend of mine set one up during the week. I don't like them at all either...

It's just like headphone product shots; it looks all neat and tidy UNTIL you add in all the cables which are necessary for it to work!

It's like a test bench but standing up with a large piece of acrylic at the front.

For those of us living in small apartments, man this is cool.

Some of that hardware is B2B only, though. I wonder if they'll actually sell such a system. A small markup price wouldn't even be that bad if you could push that much power in a small case and choose your own GPU. LAN monster. Too much RAM, though.

    Too much RAM, though.

You could always turn it into a DIMM Drive and load a game onto it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,307 ✭✭✭Xenoronin

The idea isn't to make something you can buy, it's to make the best thing possible in the smallest package. You can easily swap that ITX motherboard out for a Z170 variant and stick in an i7 rather than the server chip. I'm assuming that case is available to consumers. The RAM doesn't need to be ECC, nor 64gb worth in quad channel, duel is more than enough. Everything else is purchasable :D

I like the way you think, ser.

It was originally a KickStarter project born on Hardforums, iirc. Latest news is that CaseKing and OcUK will be stocking them at the end of the year, after the KS backers get theirs.

Yup. Started just after NCase, IIRC. I think their site says December. Was originally going to pick up an NCase, but I think I might get this just to have a nice secondary machine I can use for LANs or something. Now All I need is a USB-C monitor, along with a Razer Turret (or similar), and you have a stupidly portable gaming setup with some serious horsepower.

Sure what else are you going to do with the unused paste in the syringe!

What's so funny guys? The thermal paste is clearly conducting the heat from the backplate to... air... more efficiently. Logic.

So bizarre, doesn't look like thermal paste though. Looks sort of powdery! The back of the card is absolutly destroyed with it, completely clogged up.

It's completely lost its moisture content, just powder now.

He decided to hide the shame of the previous ad and reupload it with "cleaned" pictures :P

    Hopefully

He is not exactly giving it away either at that for a pretty old card that will need to be watercooled again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Realistically who wants a watercooled GTX280 at this point? You could hardly give it away, really. A normal air cooled 280 would cost around €30 and would be tenfold more likely to even sell.

I'm still unconvinced about the whole 'thermal paste' thing...I can't see how anyone, no matter how amateur, would be pointed towards, or come to their own conclusion that a card should be smeared externally in paste to improve performance.

Unless you went to 4chan on advice on how to improve your PC...

I think it's Murphy's law of thermal paste. If they can paste it, they will.

Never underestimate how stupid people are. I know somebody who rocked 3 generations of top end dual Nvidia cards, having never enabled SLI.
