The Amish (or Pennsylvania Dutch) have an exemption from paying Social Insurance (PRSI) because it is a form of 'gambling' in their eyes.

If war breaks out, they are allowed to take pacifist roles in administration and health care. They have a combat exemption.

'Dutch' is an incorrect corruption of Deutsch/German. The Amish originate from Germany and Switzerland.

Witness is a great film. Especially the barn-raising scene

I know the states quite well. Could name most of them off a map and maybe their capitals.
Great country for a road trip.
I love visiting the states, weirdest thing happened to my friend in Indianapolis, was walking behind a car that was at a junction, but instead of going forward the car reversed and hit my friend, it was a gentle tap, if you wanted to be in a car accident this was it, not even a bruise as a slap from my hand would have been harder, but there was this person on the pavement/sidewalk who came running over and said "I saw everything if you want to sue".
We thanked the person and said no one was hurt and everything is fine, you would nearly get the feeling the whole thing was set up.

The US is one of the great countries to visit, it has everything from great cities to mountains to desert to Arctic tundra, Yellowstone national park, scenery, varied climates, never had a problem with the people there that I met.

If I had never been, I would use the word unfortunately and not thankfully. It really is a place that is a joy to visit.

There's a West Virginia but no East Virginia.
There's Essex, Sussex and (historically) Wessex and even Middlesex, but no Nossex. I think the Kingdom of the North Saxons - "Nossex" - basically corresponds to t'north.

Until the 19th century, there was North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, but no South Yorkshire. Possibly someone from that far up north couldn't countenance the idea of being told they were actually from the south.

Apparently New Jersey has East Brunswick, South Brunswick, North Brunswick, and New Brunswick, but no West Brunswick.

And of course there's Northern Ireland, but we'd all thump anyone who refers to Southern Ireland. :)

    So things are weird.

I love the country. Been there twice over the past year. It won't be my last time either.

I reckon some people hasn't left their own county to say such things.

I could point out many of them but not them all. It feels like I've been to loads of states but when I count them up I've only been to 12 of the 50. Not even a 1/4 of the country!

Why would you be thankful that you've never visited the US?

I could finger point more state locations in the USA than my own country of Ireland. Laois / Offaly / Roscommon no idea where they are on the Irish map no lie.

If anyone is remotely interested, West Virginia is the only state created out of an existing state.

In the run-up to the Civil War, Virginia was 70% for secession and joining the Confederacy (South).

Some of the western counties of Virginia were abolitionist and wanted to remain in the Union (North).

When Virginia seceded from the United States, the western counties immediately seceded from Virginia itself.... to form West Virginia.

War came and West Virginia stood tall with the Yankees, thus fighting their neighbours in Virginia

That's not true. Maine was originally part of Massachusetts but was made into a seperate state in order to balance the senate between slave and free states. One of the many compromises which dragged out the start of the Civil War but eventually couldn't prevent it.

I think Kentucky was created out of another state.

Would you be happy living in any country? I presume you dislike Ireland for the same reason.

My Dad and I drove from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale over about 8 days a few years ago. I'd love to do the trip again, as well as the East-West one.

I did this four years ago - flew in to LA, and got the train to San Francisco, Glenwood Springs Colorado, Chicago and New York. Took about 2½ weeks. Barely scratched the surface of the country of course, but even as an America-skeptic who'd never been before, I was amazed at how diverse and interesting the place was. (And how utterly daft some of their customs are - pricing nett of tax, baseball, guns and tipping in particular)

33/50 i mean two or three I was spelling them wrong but knew the actual states. Some very odd spellings which doesn't help.

If I heard of Westmeath, I'd think there might be a Meath or Eastmeath.

I never realised Connecticut had a 'c' in the middle!

    I got 49- couldn't think of Iowa.

Apologies. You are quite correct. It was the first new state to sprout from a CONFEDERATE state.

Maine was indeed carved out of Massachusetts

I'm one of those rare freaks who can name all fifty no bother. I'm always hoping something US state related comes up in pub quizzes.

Me too, named in them all in five minutes there recently. There's always one I struggle to remember, it varies every time, but I always get it eventually. Last time it was Georgia. I can name most of the capitals too.
