Google play sub for music and youtube red (no adverts) mostly because I can't be ****ed pirating individual songs whereas with Play it's just a bit easier.

Stan sub (it's a streaming service like Netflix) I got 3 months free with an offer and didn't cancel because although I don't watch a lot of tv again this gives me stuff on demand and I don't have to wait for a download to happen.

I go to the cinema and also pirate movies. Generally anything I wasn't that pushed to watch in the cinema I'll DL if I can be bothered.

I used to pirate PC games, still do to some extent but mostly I buy cdkeys from the gray market nowadays which is a can of worms in of itself.

Regular cinema goer. Pay for Netflix and Spotify.

Generally don't pay for software as there's usually free alternatives. I've no problem downloading cracked software for a one off use, but if I actually need it long term I'd pay for it.

Download movies illegally and as well as via iTunes. For example, I won't be paying to see Ghostbusters anyway, so I'll probably download it and watch it when I've nothing else to watch some night. The movies I buy would be all time favourites that I want to have in my collection.

Nowhere bar Netlix for TV shows and even then they don't have all the stuff I want so I end up getting it via Rapidshare or torrents. Eg. Supernatural! I know it's on the US Netflix, but you can't watch it via Chromecast :(

I use Netflix, but if something isn't on there I'll torrent it. I'm not paying for 5 subscription services just because some companies want their stuff to be exclusive to one. I would have watched it legally if they gave me a reasonable chance.

As for music, I pay for Spotify premium but will probably cancel that when college restarts and I'm out of the house more. Then I rip music off youtube. Short of buying cds there's no easy way to put music on an mp3 player? Correct me if I'm wrong (I probably am). Artists hardly receive any money for their work anyway.

Games are probably where I'm most happy to spend money. I've only pirated 3 games, two because I literally could not find a copy anywhere for less than 100 euro, and one because it was overpriced for a game of its age, and I wasn't even sure if it would work (it does, but no controller support, which renders it nearly unplayable for me). I also have a massive library of Steam games I've bought and never played.

Both. I use spotify premium and netflix. Can't be wasting time dealing with mp3 youtube rippers and the like.

However, I am also happy to torrent content I can't find on these paid for services.

In any case, I stopped buying DVDs and CDs and the like years ago.

I often wonder how to torrent. I always seem to download viruses.

It depends on the deal the artist has,and the service he, she is on.
Most of the money ,70 per cent approx from streaming music goes to the big 3 record companys.
Taylor swift, adele may get alot from streaming ,but they sell millions of cds.
Youtube red gives more to singers, video maker,s , i don,t know if its a big sucesss like spotify.
    http://www.cnet.com/how-to/youtube-red-details/
Pop singers who have millions of views on youtube get income from the ads .
Almost every pop song is put up on vevo /youtube.
The problem is you,d need to pay for netflix plus 1 or 2 other video services if you
want acess to all the popular comedys and tv shows.
services like hulu are only avaidable in the us .
most software can be downloaded as a demo if you wanna try it for a few weeks.
Or theres a free limited legal version .
which you can pay for to get the pro version.
i just buy games from cex,or game, preowned 10-20 euro.

I got rid of Sky a couple of years ago as it is very expensive. I kept my dish and used Freesat, now I have a sub with a server for all the channels on Sky UK & Sky Ireland subscriptions (most HD not available with it though) - does me

I bought 500ish DVDs when the craze was on and I never watch films on a phone, laptop or smallish TV. I have a projector with 84" screen with surround sound and that is what I use to watch Blu Ray and DVD. I have no problem downloading TV series / documentaries

I had hundreds of CDs, ripped them and sold them on, I am starting to buy back some of them in Poundland (excellent condition for £1!). I had hundreds of cassette tapes and I have no qualms downloading these off the internet. I try before I buy now by downloading the album and if I like it I will buy the CD although I will wait until it gets cheaper

I have never used itunes, spotify or Netflix

I stopped buying cds yonks ago. The only time I buy a cd is if I'm at a small gig somewhere and the band are selling merchandise after the show.

We had Netflix for a while but didn't feel like it was worth paying for after we had watched most things we were interested in. Saying that I may sign up again. I like the layout and they seem to be adding more content. Handy for the odd time I'm bored at home on a day off. Downloaded Stranger Things from another website though, that was great! It's not too difficult to find things I want to watch from other sources. I am not a big tv watcher anyway. My OH is and he usually just finds tv shows on various streaming sites and uses a Chromecast. We don't have Sky or anything like that. Never in my life paid for software.

I do pay for Apple Music. The family membership works out cheap and I have unlimited data with Three, so handy for the car and when walking around town.

Don't listen to them OP. You're not a fool paying for music or movies for stuff you prefer.

The people who would want everything for free probably wouldn't care that there are people employed in these industries who get paid for their work all of the time no matter how big or small it is. They certainly would not like it if they had to work in these jobs with absolutely no pay at the end of their working week.

I don't use netflix but I do purchase a small amount of CDs & a large amount of DVDs & Blu-rays of stuff that I like to watch or listen to at home. I also have a subscription on Groove Music on Windows 10 for stuff that is not sold here in a physical outlet. Scheduled TV on Saorview & Free Satellite does help in someway in getting some gems of programmes but it is mostly reality TV garbage that I would not be interested in watching at all. I also had never had a Sky sub to my name as it costs a ton of money & hassle for the likes of me to arrange & install.

I also buy PC games on Steam & Wildtangent games as I don't like getting viruses on my laptop hard drive.

iTunes is certainly a big load of overpriced ****e to begin with. I haven't bothered with it because I hate the restrictions it can bring to purchasing music by not putting it on a CD afterwards. F*ckin despicable that.

directors actors and musicians work hard to provide these pieces. They entertain us and movies and music bring a lot of colour and diversity to life. I think the least we could do is to give such minimal amounts of money in exchange for them

I pay for Apple music, Netflix, Sky Movies and the sports channels.
At least Sky will have UHD in the next few weeks.

IF you ring up sky ,all you have to do is be there for 1 hour.
    on a certain day.
Tell the installer where the tv is.If you give up your sub,in the future
no one comes back for the reciever ,you still have a free to air sky reciever.
    And a sky dish.
some apartments don,t allow satellite dishs.
PC Games are very cheap on steam , if you wait for the sales .

That is because you have paid for it, it is yours!

Lots of music fans are forced to use torrents as the music they want simply isn't available on legal sites.

Fans of older genres where the musicians are long dead definitely have problems finding digital or physical copies of back catalogues.

You might find a greatest hits or whatever, but the actual albums may not be in print or they haven't been made available by record companies and whatnot.

Netflix have just revamped their line-up and The Irish Times have just published an article about the best 50 films on Netflix. Some great films there.

Thanks, Murph. Netflix owes ye one. I just read a bit of that article and that's me sold. I'm signing back up to them, tonight. I tend to join. Watch all that I fancy. Cancel. Now that I see there's so much new stuff .....

Staying with the spirit of the thread; Music? I've really only ever bought it. Someone once sent be a ripped CD of " Devils and Dust ". I promptly rushed out and bought it. I'd have done the same if I'd heard it, sitting in their house.

Truth is; I don't really know How to get music. Either way, I Like to pay for the official CD. Saying that? Sadly, my deafness is now at the point where I just don't enjoy getting low quality sound in just the one ear. No more records for me then :(

Films / TV? " Watch Series " is my friend! (I have no TV). Most other, random films, I just google for. My physical DVD collection is a bit of a dust trap.

Bit pissed, right now, because I can't find this latest GOT yet. I'd happily pay for it. Just don't understand the pay sites

Spotify is the only thing I pay for. Have a family account so my brother and OH get use out of it too. Brother pays for Netflix and I use his account too, while my OH pays for the WWE network and Marvel Unlimited which are used across multiple devices too.

I had a 1st gen iPod touch since launch and when Apple stopped them all working a while back I signed up for a trial of Spotify. I could never have pictured myself paying for music again but it really is convenient and with a great variety of music, although there's some gaps in older music.

The majority of films and TVs shows are downloaded or streamed. Would still go the cinema the odd time because you can't beat it.

    Sports all streamed.

Most of my downloading was comics, Marvel Unlimited has cut down on a lot of it but until DC offer something similar I will keep downloading their stuff.

This is not true. Apple do not use DRM but I hear many people say it and the misnomer persists. Strange.

    Info from Apple here.

It's not 1998 any more. A lot of pirated music is available in FLAC and ALAC. Most mps3s you get these days are at 320kb/s. I've a decent audio set up and yes I can hear the difference, but for most people it's imperceptable and to me it doesn't justify storing everything in FLAC (I own a lot of music physically and even more digitally).

As for myself, I can't be arsed with films and I'll torrent maybe three TV shows a year - I don't watch much so a Netflix sub or whatever isn't justified and I don't have any traditional TV service, that's for sure.

Music-wise, I'll "try before I buy" or torrent stuff that is out of print and goes for ridiculous money for secondhand copies. With smaller bands I'll make sure to support them (ye know Spotify pays absolutely **** all, right?) by buying the album, maybe some merchandise if it's cool and going to see them if they play here.

For big bands I have no qualms about torrenting their stuff (although I still buy) eg. I'm missing a few Beatles albums from my (physical) collection so it's off to whatever torrent site. Self entitled? Yeah, a bit, but it's not like Paul and Ringo are lying awake at night worrying about their bank balance and I'm certainly not gonna be lying on my deathbed thinking "I wish I didn't torrent The White Album".

Sometimes I think about getting Netflix and then someone will post a list of all the great films they are showing and I realise I've already seen most of them. Sky movies suits me better as it's newer stuff.

That said most of the movies I watch at home are on blu-ray.

I love Spotify...it has really resurrected my love of music, well worth the subscription fee.

I paid for Netflix for a while too, great service.

For those who don't want to....continue to spend hours downloading poor quality films and music.
