McConaughey was superb in that tbf. And it was an important movie in the whole McConnaisance too.

And how is that relevant ?

Christian Bale in American Psycho. A brilliant film, and an outstanding performance.

Matthew McConnaughey is the name of the actor who won the Oscar. McConnaughey was enjoying a revival in his career and was drawing widespread critical acclaim at the time of his Oscar win. It's relevant because had it just been a performance from out of nowhere he may not have been treated as favourably by the Oscar committee. But because he had built a bit of a serious acting pedigree at that stage with some decent indie movies he was viewed as a worthy winner.

Still, objectively, his performance was fantastic, and he deserved to win as much as anybody.

Jennifer Anniston in Cake - fantastic, realistic performance. Not even nominated, IIRC. I suppose she may have been damned by her pigeon-holed roles prior to this, but she really stood out in this.

Jake Gyllenhall in Nightcrawler - one of the most unlikeable characters ever, even when you understand his motivation and his possible autistic/Asperger's challenges.

Clint Eastwood should have won best Actor for either Million Dollar Baby or Gran Torino.
    .

No way. Both of those films are way overrated. And the acting was nothing special.

I agree that Fiennes should have won but In fairness Tommy Lee Jones was brilliant in that film and deserved a nomination

And it led to one of the all time great Simpsons jokes so I'll always have great time for that film and character.

It's a good film, as action tv remakes go and his performance was fine in it, but Oscar worthy? How??

It was basically the same role he played in Double Jeopardy - nothing special or memorable about it, imo.

Ennio Morricone only winning an Oscar this year baffles me.

Soundtracks are so good you hardly need to watch he film

    Disagree.

They are 2 very moving films and Clint's performance in both was outstanding.

I said Fiennes should have won but it was still an excellent performance by Jones.

I'm a big fan of his in general so I'm probably biased.

Nick Nolte - Thin Red Line

his performance was amazing I honestly think he gave the best screen performance ever in movie history, its incredible esp the scene where he lambasts Captain Staros over the phone with his face contorted with rage with veins popping out of his forehead you'd swear he was right there in the middle of a battle > completely convincing.

and whats disgraceful is that he wasn't even nominated for an oscar for it:cool:

Yeah Nick Nolte gave a great performance. He might have got a nod for best supporting actor, but he was nominated for best actor that same year for his performance in Affliction so I'd imagine the Academy thought that was recognition enough.

Many, many instances of people and films being overlooked over the years. So much of the business of securing a nomination or even an award is down to campaigning and politics, so it's hardly surprising that great work often goes unrecognised and middle-brow stuff rises to the fore.

The whole 'foreign language film' rule and their separate category is a joke - in the history of the oscars, there have been only 9 'best film' nominations for foreign language films.

I can't remember who, but some actor or actress said that the oscars should be seen as Hollywood patting itself on the back, rather than a celebration of quality.

But that is what it is.

The awards are basically the Mainstream English Language Film awards.

Which is perfectly fine as that's what most people accept them to be.

Although people are discussing it here people really shouldn't take them too seriously as unlike sport where there is a proper system for determining the best team/individual the best film, book,TV show etc is all up for debate and there is no right answer.

Look, first of all, not everything has to have 'nuance' ffs...

Of course not but it's better when they do. As for the rest of your post, I get it, you're a fan. Not everyone is, and they may well have good reasons. I personally found it over the top, So did lots of people. Great if you didn't but that doesn't really matter to how others perceive it. As for it being judged differently now than on release. That happens a lot with films. Their stock can rise and fall on later reflection.

Apocalypse Now only won one oscar and didn't win best picture that year despite being one of the all-time great war movies.

    Anyone in Das Boot.
    Wonderful movie.

I need to watch that. I am amazed by the all the Hollywood schlock that Wolfgang Petersen made after that though.

I think Jake Gyllenhaal is just a fantastic actor. He lifts mediocre films even when he is in them.

Speaking of Gyllenhaal, who is a superb actor, how was Donnie Darko overlooked for best original screenplay?

Didn't Donnie Darko become a cult favourite?

Day-Lewis should have won best actor for Gerry Conlon in In the Name of the Father, his best performance.

    True, it's his finest piece.
Crack out 2 boxes of popcorn, it's a 3 and half hour one the directors cut.

Get the longest version you can (it was originally a six-part series) and for crying out loud don't watch the dubbed English version. It's awful. German with subtitles is much better. IMO, of course.

Clint Eastwood should have won best Actor for either Million Dollar Baby or Gran Torino.

Jaws should have won best picture for 1975,, ahead of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.

Hitchcock should have won a bucket load of best Director Oscars.

Clint should have won all the oscars. Even for films he wasn't in.

Herzogs fitzcarroldo didn't get nominated. I would have loved to seen footage of Klaus kinski at the Oscars!
