My car failed its NCT this morning - on emissions - she had a serious service a week and a half ago - so obviously mucho confused............she's an 11 Focus, the Smoke reading was 6.540/m (whatever that means) - all the filters were changed in the service, and the mechanic put some cleaner yoke through the system aswell

anyone got any ideas - is there something bigger going on??

O2 Sensor gone in exhaust it controls emissions air fuel mix & your car burns more fuel than it should is one reason for it along with other sensors on the engine get someone to do a scan on it.

How is the car driving? No check engine lights? What engine is it 1.6 or 1.8? Could be signs of EGR sticking put the ECU would pick that up and show a fault on the dash.

If a cleaner has been put through the system, and car has not been driven enough (at least another tank of diesel used), then it is probably still in the system, and all the muck is being cleaned, so emissions would be higher.
Or could be the o2, or lamba sensors (so it burns more fuel than needed) or even the DPF doing a regeneration.
