Very possible. The market shifts very drastically so I wouldn't be surprised if they sow a niche where they could insert 490. I would expect it compete with 1080 etc. More with 1070.

AMD are going to be supplying all the consoles, all the higher end Macs and may do really well with the 480X on our side of the fence.

nVidia may have the fastest card, but AMD are going to actually sell units.

Why would it be bad for AMD?

The Titan is a halo card; 99.9% of people will never buy one?

It's an expensive cards and I assume it has very good margins. While most people won't buy one a lot still will so it's a card that can bring in a lot of profit. Last gen, it took AMD a long time to get the 300 series out and they left the high end to nVidia with the 970, 980, 980Ti and Titan X. nVidia ended up dominating and gained serious market share. Now we're in a similar situation. AMD at least has the 480 out there and maybe a 490 on the horizon but if they don't have anything to compete with nVidia in the high end soon, it could really cost them.

Titan X is more exciting for deep learning and number crunching with CUDA with Multi-GPUs, the amount of people running it for gaming would be minimal.

The last Titan X was an out and out gaming card. It sacrificed FP64 performance for gaming and it showed. The Titan X was a lot better than the 980 and a lot of people did buy it for gaming. Obviously, the 980Ti was better value when it was released but it was still just a cut down Titan X. The last Titan X was a gaming card.

Don't know about Apple but the console chips will have very tight margins. It'll add units and revenue but won't be very profitable. I imagine Apple are the same. Not to mention the chips used in the consoles won't be very expensive either. A low cost, low margin product is great for shipping units and revenue but it doesn't give you a lot of money to invest in R&D.

    Anyone with a server board:

Getting a BMC self-test: Failed error in BIOS, I also can't seem to access any hardware sensors (they're all reading N/A). I've updated BIOS and BMC to latest versions and no difference (v2.90 and 0.27 respectively).

All the IPMI stuff seems to work fine, but it's a bit annoying not having CPU temps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

I had that when the BMC jumper was in the reset position vs the operating position.

I haven't moved any jumpers around since I got the board.

    Also, there's a BMC jumper? :P

(I only remember seeing USB ones)

Other board, same BMC. Havent checked the Asrock.

Tried a reset via https://www.supermicro.com/solutions/SMS_IPMI.cfm ? (Must be run on bare metal, will crash remote PCs)

So I bought a phantom 820 for about £180 and picked a 660W PSU instead of the 800W for the same price due to having to wait a few weeks to get the 800W. The case is now temporarily out of stock on amazon but at £53. ****.

That link you posted in the bargain alerts thread opens up to amazon.com for me for some reason and if i manually search www.amazon.co.uk for that case I do not see it for £53

Strange, did the same for me. Updated it with this one. You may need to look at the new sellers in order to see it due to it not being in stock at the moment.

    amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BRFGJ5C/ref=ox_sc_mini_detail?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

EDIT: No idea why the link wont work. It works sometimes for me. Try copy/pasting it.

Oh yeah I see the price now, sickner. Try cancel your original order of that case or don't open it and send it back. You will have to pay for shipping it back though.

I ordered one anyway bit of a change from my bitfenix merc alpha. That's if it doesn't get cancelled for being a mistake.

So fiddled around a bit with my system this morning before work.
I installed mew version of afterburner amd when I have time I will try to oc my new 1060 a wee bit.
One thing I noticed voltage is locked in afterburner even if you unlock it in settings. Surely it can't be locked? Any ideas? I did not had chance to play around with overclockers all together even without voltage.
    Any ideas? It's gigabyte G1 1060.

could do with some advice on a problem im having lads, 390x seems to have died :(. Bought it at the end of February this year so im a little annoyed tbh. Got my new build and was at a friends putting it all together, we decided to replace the thermal paste on the gpu while we where doing everything (in hindsight that wasnt a fantastic idea).

Pc booted up and i thought everything was fine and dandy, went home tried to browse chrome and my temps where hitting 90 degrees and shutting my pc down, fantastic. tried underclocking it but no difference, clean driver reinstall as well to no avail. My friend has been trying to fix it for the last day but he doesnt seem to be getting anywhere with it, gpu seems to be working as intended it just isnt dissipating the heat.

Bought it from elara.ie, is there any point in trying to rma it through them or xfx themselves what with having voided the warranty by removing the heatsink for fresh paste?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

whoever replaced the thermal paste did a very poor job either applying the paste or re-seating the cooler.

I wouldn't immediately try and RMA it because most likely it'll get sent straight back branded as customer interference.

Some manufacturers allow users to remove the cooler and install 3rd party, check if XFX are one of them. Otherwise, it'll be an uphill struggle.

Probably just needs someone to properly clean, reapply, and re-fit cooler.

The card is fine then, just re open it and put the paste back on. I've done it with GPUs before, so you can reapply paste and it'll be perfect. As Terror said it's just been applied incorrectly or the cooler isn't on right

Yeah most likely voltage locked, you could get into the modded bios's if there are any about to increase it that way but it can be a bit of hassle for the extra MHz,was pretty disappointed when my old G1 970 was voltage locked. Huge cooler, super low temps but couldnt push the core past 1488Mhz as it would be unstable, reckon all it needed was a small bump in v to take it further. So over clocked the card peaked at about 69C,loads of headroom left but could do sweet FA with it.

EDIT: Were you looking at getting a 21:9 monitor? Pauls Hardware on youtube has a new vid up testing the 1060 on the ultrawide monitors. Using the same card as you bought too.

thats exactly what my friend thought, and he has removed and applied 2 different types of paste, he is very good with all the building side of things, done a beautiful job on my new rig

Are you serious?! G1 are locked? Why they put 8pin on it then?! I though last few generations G1 were pretty damn good overclockers. God dammit... Will see at home what can I achieve with locked voltage.
Cheers for link, I'll check it after work. I am definitely going for 21:9 now. I think soon too as I can't stand being down from 3 monitors to one now.

90 degrees on a GPU doesn't do anything, 90 degrees on a cpu shuts the machine down.

Try downloading this utility to see if the voltage control is unlocked as it is from gigabyte for their graphics cards.

yeah its a weird one, turns the screen off but the pc is still running, feels like a power problem but ive a 750w with an non overclocked 6700k so that cant be it, still that wouldnt really explain the massive temperature increase

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

GPU will totally close shop if the temps get too high I'm pretty sure. Stop running the PC until you get something sorted with the paste anyways, testing it over and over without any changes is only trying to damage the card

Anyone here used parcel motel before with Amazon? How do I use it and am I able to get that free UK delivery? Want to buy a new mouse and some other things that don't deliver to Ireland

Yep. Set yourself up a Parcel Motel account and get your PM ID (a number). You also chose which Parcel Motel depot is best to deliver packages to.

Parcel Motel show you what you set your "UK Address" as.

You add this address to your Amazon account.

When you are ordering, you select that address for delivery and avail of free or cheaper postage.

The package gets delivered to the depot you selected and you are given a PIN to collect your package.

    Easy Peasy.

Yes it will work and you still get free UK delivery also some places only give free shipping to UK mainland so use addresspal from an post to avail of free main land shipping.

Only problem with addresspal is the second fundamental reason why parcel motel is so successful. You can collect your parcels out of business hours with Parcel Motel. As long as the majority of an-post offices have hours like 9am-1pm, its a crap service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I use addresspal as the local post office is 2 mins from the house where as my nearest parcel motel is 30 miles away. I live out in the sticks.
