I think your posts were badly phrased because to me, that's two different things. The first gen games, and maybe branching into second and third, were great. Then they starting getting bad. I hate the modern take on games and cartoons. They've done the same to Mickey Mouse. Everything is fluffy and friendship. The pokemon are looking like the devs were just clutching at straws and turning anything into a pokemon just to add numbers.
But I still play the first few games on repeat. I still made my own Pikachu costume for Halloween a few years back. I still have an Umbreon hat I got at Comic Con last year. I have a paper art Pikachu sitting on my bookshelf. I have a Meowth and a Charmander teddy sitting on my bed.
But if we go by the logic in your first post, I'm not a true fan because I prefer first gen games. I get your point about bandwagoners, but I don't think the game generations are going to play much part it whittling them out. Time and eventual boredom will have a greater effect. Most won't even notice the difference in generations. Until then, with the emergence of GoT, superhero movies and now Pokemon, I've gone from one of the least popular kids in the playground, to the most (figuratively speaking)
