I've no problems with adults playing games. The issue for me is that its objectively not a very good game that while superficially taps into nostalgia is actually tapping ito people's OCD/collecting tendencies, and I'm guessing exploits this through in-app purchases. I don't really see how using "stardust" or whatever to level up is any different to what games like candy crush do. I also don't think people can distinguish between when they're having fun, and when its just a case of the reward part of their brain being activated, the very thing games like this are designed to do.

So, cycling, even slowly is a waste of time for hatching, decent for catching and great for pokestops.
I need to bring a spare battery in future; I get just over an hour of full-on play.

    What's a lure?
How do I train a Pokemon?
    What's the point of medals?
Is there anything to do to make sure a Pokemon stays trapped or is it just luck and perseverance?
Is there any reason not to evolve?
    Or transfer duplicates?
    Where do I get stardust?

A lure is a module that turns a pokestop into a beacon for pokemon for everyone around it.

normal pokemon training doesn't exist, you evolve and power them up with stardust and candies.
The game calls training when you fight your own colour's gyms.

achievements. people cry if they're not in a game nowadays.

Razz berries before each time the pokemon enters your balls.

You'll get higher CP(combat power) pokemon from the wild as you level up.

transfering duplicates gets you 1 candy of their type.

catching pokemon, evolving, hatching eggs, etc.

    What's a lure?
It's a (generally paid for) item that attracts pokemon to a particular pokestop - the difference between this and incense is that incense only works for the individual player but a lure works for everyone. this is why you'll see people congregating at pokestops where a lure is being used (the pink flowers surround the pokestop).

How do I train a Pokemon?
You don't train them in the pokemon game sense - instead you can power up existing pokemon with stardust and candies of the same pokemon type. but you might find higher cp pokemon soon enough as you level up in trainer levels.

    What's the point of medals?
    So far just bragging rights.

Is there anything to do to make sure a Pokemon stays trapped or is it just luck and perseverance?
When you throw the ball you see a circle grow smaller - the smaller the circle the greater the chance of a catch IF you land the ball in the smaller circle. you see this with the "nice", "great" and "excellent" tags. Personally I find the excellent small circle too hard to hit consistently and prefer going for great (better) or nice (still good) throws.

Is there any reason not to evolve?
Yes, if you evolve early you miss out on evolving later pokemon you catch which has higher cp. as max cp is tied to trainer level it is better to wait until you have enough candies to evolve all the way to the top before evolving (or if you can resist - waiting till trainer level 20) this is because you will encounter much higher cp base pokemon later on in the game - I.e. at level 9 you might find a 90cp pidgey which might turn ultimately to a 250cp pidgeot, but at level 17 you might find a 250cp pidgey which could have turned into a 800cp pidgeot (numbers exaggerated as an example) so now you have a 250cp fully evolved pokemon at the cp level as a base pokemon. Note you can still bring you 250cp pidgeot to 800cp - but it will take a lot of stardust and candies. It's easier to just wait and catch a higher cp base pokemon to start with.

    Or transfer duplicates?
Trading will come in the future apparently... so maybe keeping some rare pokemon is a good idea but otherwise candies are great.

    Where do I get stardust?
    Stardust comes from
    1. catching pokemon (100)
    2. holding gyms and collecting reward (500 per gym)
    3. hatching eggs (varies by egg type)
it's a very valuable resource and the general advice is to save it until you know which pokemon you want to power up (which may occur at around level 20) - I regret spending a lot of stardust on pokemon that I simply caught better versions of later when I reached a higher trainer level.

Hey there - I answered your questions in your quote above - hope it helps and great to hear you're enjoying the game :)

I am not gonna bother with multi quotes cos there is too much bollóx to bother for that.

Objectively ? What the fook does that mean ? I objectively think Tomb Raider sucks balls yet it has sold millions... No OCD alarm bells here either tbh.

Distinguish ? I am pretty sure people "know they" are having fun, your bollix rant doesn't interpret that i am sure. I have yet to meet any ' yo bud you don't have 2 pokeballs to spare do ya' types thus far. You are in no position to even attempt to 'distinguish' what people are or are not doing.

It is a pokemon game that makes people exercise somewhat and have fun doing it...

    You don't have to play.

Don't think of it as a "normal" game - instead think of it as an exercise motivator... Over the last 10 days I've walked over 80 kilometres - something I would never have done if it wasn't for this game. So instead of spending an hour at night playing world of tanks I go for a walk down the harbour instead and hey that's great for me and my body.

As someone else posted on reddit - the good thing is that normally exercise would only reward you with a healthy body maybe 6 months down the line - here you see an immediate "benefit" from the pokemon you've caught/hatched while on your walk. It's no bad thing in my books. If my brain is being tricked to exercise more then bring it on I say.

I would say its possible to analyse games/films/books etc. relatively objectively. Yes people have different tastes etc. What I mean is not coming from a particular fan-type perspective. Take the new ghostbusters movie. Its pretty clear that the people on IMDB giving it 1/10 have an axe to grind, whereas the people giving it 5 or 6 are being fairer. I'm coming from that perspective.

The idea of catching pokemon while out and about using AR is a nice idea and ties into the original games. From what I can see, everything after that is purposely designed to get people chasing ever further away rewards, and then allow them to purchase their way to those rewards. These games are designed that way on purpose. And going by news reports, plenty of people are making those purchases.

TBH, apart from the AR idea, its not really a pokemon game per se, but a trap for your brain with a pokemon overlay.

I agree its good that you and others are getting exercise. Of course, Nintendo/niantic/ the pokemon company etc didn't make the game for that reason. Its a very cynically designed game designed around psychological rewards and decreasing returns on investment.

Once popularity fizzles down I'm predicting they'll release gen 2 ... The bandwagoners wont like it because most don't know much after gen 1. Soon the game will belong to true fans once more! Meanahaha

I'm using it as a fitness app! I've never been so motivated to walk in my life!

I'm confused as to how knowing more about the originals in bandwagoning. Surely it's the complete opposite? Also, true fans?

    Help help help

I have eggs and they show up in my items list but not in the right side of the pokemon menu so I can't incubate them?

Any ideas am I doing something wrong here?
Uninstalled and redownloaded app no good.

If they are in the items menu then it is a lucky egg, a slightly blueish one? It doubles your XP received for 30 min when you use it.

Knowing more about the originals? Bandwagoners only remember the originals because that's what was popular back when! No one cared when new games came out!
I'm talking about people who two weeks ago would say "omg you still play Pokémon?" In a voice of disdain if I mentioned I was playing Pokemon or looking forward to sun/moon are now all like "omg Pokémon!".

I've played every Pokemon game as they've been released, as have many others, I've bought a game boy advance, then a ds and then a 3ds to play Pokemon. I've kept it a secret in my real life as people would scoff and call me names if I said I still played! I got through my leaving certificate using Pokemon on the ds as my escape from reality. I'd tell people I was asleep .... And now suddenly everyone is like "OMG Pokemon!"

My secret is now suddenly popular.

It's like mma when mcgreggor fights. No one gave a **** before then! And everyone keeps suddenly an expert!

I think your posts were badly phrased because to me, that's two different things. The first gen games, and maybe branching into second and third, were great. Then they starting getting bad. I hate the modern take on games and cartoons. They've done the same to Mickey Mouse. Everything is fluffy and friendship. The pokemon are looking like the devs were just clutching at straws and turning anything into a pokemon just to add numbers.
But I still play the first few games on repeat. I still made my own Pikachu costume for Halloween a few years back. I still have an Umbreon hat I got at Comic Con last year. I have a paper art Pikachu sitting on my bookshelf. I have a Meowth and a Charmander teddy sitting on my bed.
But if we go by the logic in your first post, I'm not a true fan because I prefer first gen games. I get your point about bandwagoners, but I don't think the game generations are going to play much part it whittling them out. Time and eventual boredom will have a greater effect. Most won't even notice the difference in generations. Until then, with the emergence of GoT, superhero movies and now Pokemon, I've gone from one of the least popular kids in the playground, to the most (figuratively speaking) :D

Thanks for the great answers, much appreciated. Am I right in thinking I should transfer the Pokemon I've evolved so I can catch the evolved ones in the wild?
I don't get the razz berries thing? Last night it took me five minutes to catch Rattica as he escaped twelve times in a row from the pokeball. I'd caught him with the circles in nice great and excellent positions but he bust out all the same. He had over 300 CP in the end though, so worth all the wasted pokeballs!

The game is allegedly banned until further notice in France, but it seems like a good thing if there are fewer players, right?

give the razzberries to the pokemon to catch them easier

Does it really matter when someone got into (or out of) pokemon games though? Just because someone can't name all 700+ pokemon, doesn't mean their enjoying of the game should affect yours.

Does anyone if cycling counts when hatching eggs? And do I just keep the app open in the background for that to work because obviously I'm not going to hold it in my hand.

There's people with pokemon in the nearby gyms that are 800-1000 cp?? How are they doing that

As you level up, pokemon will start appearing with higher CP levels.

I noticed that alright but got a shock at those numbers. What kind of trainer levels are we talking?

I can't even get in to my own gyms. I'm level 11

I'm hoping the level cap is 30 at max (I've heard there are already players in mid-20s) or it'll basically be whoever got into the game earlier and grinded will make gyms completely inaccessible to regular players with their huge CP Pokemon.

    This.

I loved pokemon from the first time I saw it. Played all the games (i still play blue on my gameboy!), had the trading cards and whatnot. Never stopped liking it. After the third generation, it went to crap IMO.

So am I a bandwagoner now because I like pokemon go? I like it because it has 250 pokemon, feels like the older generations.

As you level up, you'll get them. I think it's level 8 when you get them. After that, you'll get some at pokestops too

Pokestops/leveling up. But the won't appear at all for you until you're around level 5
