I'm on both. Generally, I prefer boards, but reddit's great for having boards for very specific topics that are highly active. Especially for particular computer games.

Reddit is okay for news. It's good for the AMAs too but for actual conversations beyond one or two posts, it's terrible. I'll read it and if it's on the askreddit sub then sure, it's good. But for the most part it's some weird mixture of Facebook, Twitter and After Hours all rolled into one.

    Two very different things.

Can't get the swing of reddit, I really like boards but reddit has its advantages in some areas.

On both, reddit is good to read (so many areas) but very hard to have conversations or discussions compaired to boards.

On both. Down voting is mad on Reddit. Leads to all sorts of crap. Or brigading I think they call it. Dataisbeautiful sub is good, Ireland sub is obsessed with the rubber bandits, all matters Sinn Fein and the Social Democrats. There are way too many Yanks posting holiday pictures and bull****ting about Ireland. A lot of Reddit is reposted imgur which is fun. I like cat pictures, what can I say. Boards has huge advantages over both but they have their uses.

/r/Ireland's relaxed content policies are far superior, but it just doesn't have the users or the forum categorisation that we have on Boards.

/r/Ireland needs fiair rather than sub-subreddits. They keep trying to split off into smaller Irish forums which is a recipe for disaster (hell, even on Boards it's only semi-successful and results in a lot of zombie forums) - what they need is thread flair so that you can say whether your post is about Irish politics, sport, media, weather, a particular city, etc.

I spend 90% of the time on Reddit. It's so much better for reading interesting discussions, opinions, comments - since the bad stuff gets downvoted. Around here - AH especially - most of the posts are rubbish and add nothing to the conversation. It's an endless stream of crap jokes, bad puns and you are ma. Drives me buts how good threads are started only to be derailed soon after by people talking rubbish like 12 year olds

On both. Use boards more but as traffic here decreases (at least to mind) I find myself gravitating to Reddit more often.

Reddit is far superior in my opinion. Simply because of the tech.

This post for example could turn into its own discussion on which system is better while on vBulletin?, it's a bit of a mess if someone wants to reply to only this line of conversation.

I can't be the only one who opens a load of new quote tabs while reading through a boards.ie thread and then closes all but one of them because either the post I want to reply to was on page 10 of 30 or I know I'd be derailing the thread. On reddit, I reply to every post and end up in far more conversations because of it.

The backend of reddit is open source. I'm convinced that it boards.ie had an extra version of after hours using it for a week or two, people would far prefer it and post more.

The current setup is grand but realistically, posts get completely forgotten about once they're not on the latest page. Even the position of a post on a page affects its impact. On the top of a new page with default number of posts per page? Lots of replies. The last post on a page? Usually nothing.

Yeah but following a discussion chronologically on reddit is a nightmare.

Also, why should the most 'liked' comment be top? That makes no sense and is elitist in a sense. I often see these 'top comments' reference other comments but I (obviously) wouldn't have read them given that I had just opened the thread.

Give an option to sort by 'most liked' or whatever but the default should always be 'sorted by' date imo.

Quality of posts on Reddit is poorer than Boards.

Prefer boards but spend a lot of time browsing reddit, find alot of the stuff on reddit seems to be posted by some 14 year old with an attitude.

You can sort by 'new' if you want to view chronologically, you can also sort by 'best' 'top' etc. The reason more liked comments are top is so that crap comments fall to the bottom and don't waste your time. Generally it's more important that a comment is good than what time it was posted.

You all must mean reading discussions and conversations because those ratios certainly don't show you having them.

Prefer reddit. r/Ireland beats after hours hands down. Some of the topics and general level of discussion here are depressing.

Boards has it uses for specific Irish info though. I use the work and jobs and bargain alerts (even that's gone to crap lately with inane arguments about megathreads) regularly enough. Same with the broadband forum. Some very knowledgeable posters there.

Both have their pros and cons. Boards is better for discussing with Irish people. Reddit has the **** get downvoted to the bottom. I do find people can downvote anything, someone asks what time Tesco in Cork opens tomorrow, you post the opening hours and a link to the website and see yourself downvoted.

Not on Reddit, it looks very confusing and I'm not someone who's willing to put a great deal of effort into something.

Tend to browse Reddit and will comment on the topic when it pops up here the day after.

Boards' strength now is in being a source of information and for the most part discussion is dying off due to moderation, serial re-regs hijacking topics, and 3 or 4 posters viewing AH as their personal blog.

Boards is designed for irish users ,
    so its better .
IF you want any info on irish topics.
Reddit has forums on almost any subject, tech, gaming, news, music, etc
so it has a wider range of info and coverage than boards.
Say you look up cars or phones on reddit you,ll mostly get info on
products avaidable in the us and the price in america.
Which is not much use to a person buying in ireland.
its not so much one is better ,
both are great sources of info .
If i want to talk or comment on any irish topic i,ll post on boards .
If i need help or advice or info on an irish topic i go to boards .
i presume most of reddit,s users are americans .

Reddit is far better imho. Unless its a specific local knowledge question. R/soccer is 100 times better than the man-u v Liverpool forum here. R/ireland is better than after hours. Reddit has far more interesting topics.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,889 ✭✭✭✭The Moldy Gowl

Reddit is far better. Boards is slowly dying by death of a thousand cuts from the people in charge and Mods who want to look busy and be sycophantic. I tend to notice a lot of cringey posters offering out life advice which is spoof.

Can get links to stream sports without the Mods having a heart attack.
    Loads of porn subs
    Funnier threads.
    Funnier gifs.
    Funnier photos.

It's not difficult to get into at all and anytime someone says it's confusing is just an idiot.

I actually like the way the comments are sorted by most up voted especially for news events or an interesting photo or whatever.
The info you want is just there without having to wade through 10 pages of 2 lads fighting here.

I keep meaning to actually have a decent look around reddit but literally all I know about it is that it has a bunch of weird **** on it like legit subforums for furries, bronies and MRAs.

I use the Something Awful forums more than anything else. Their userbase is tanking and it is very early 2000s in style/look but they have really good, informative threads about pretty much any topic you can think of.
