I am thinking of building an alcove unit and plastering it, then painting it the same colour as the walls.
I can build the unit no problem, but would need to plaster it to make it look right.
Is it difficult to do this to a reasonable standard ?

    Thanks

Youtube is your friend, lots of DIY plastering and skimming videos.

It's not the easiest thing to do but is certainly DIYable.

As an alternative to traditional plastering, I'd recommend plasterboard -> Gyproc joint filler to fill the gaps and corners (goes rock hard in about 10 mins) and then a coat of ProMix Finish on top which, after a day can be sanded and then sealed with emulsion undercoat.
