Hi all , have my eye on a Peugeot 407 1.6 diesel that just sailed through NCT with no issues , looking on line a lot of folks said they are a bad car and to stay away from them .

Any other suggestions diesel wise as my weekly commute will increase shortly . Price range 1-2k insurance and tax isn't an issue , just something to give me a good mpg really

I'd have little or no faith in a €1k-2k 1.6 litre diesel 407. In that price range most of them are either tired old dogs or money pits. That engine is not very forgiving to abuse or lack of servicing.

I'd be looking at something like a Mondeo 2.0 TDDi, it's an old and unrefined engine but they generally give very little bother outside of consumable parts. A lot more robust than the Peugeot engine.

    For example:

If the year of the car isn't too important a pre pd tdi vag car would be a solid option. The 110bhp tdi's are great engines the 90bhp tdi's are a bit sluggish but very solid reliability wise. Golf, bora, Leon, Octavia or Toledo all share lots of parts and are pretty cheap to repair all are unrefined but if you keep a shrewd eye out you could pick up a grand clean example for well within your budget.

Never thought about Mondeo , I've read a lot on Peugeot , the car went through NCT yesterday but then again the NCT isn't much to go on

I think you should forget Peugeot forget Mondeo forget Passat

    Go for a Saab 93
I've had mine the last fourteen months.
Excellent on diesel and its bulletproof I've never had any hassle
    Bought it at 112000
    It's now at 135000 m

Is it a 1.9tid? We have a Vectra with that engine and its seriously impressive. Over 50mpg on every tank and rapid too.

Yes 1.9tid. And people will say you'll have problems getting parts for Saab as they're not made anymore but like you said same engine as Vectra so shouldn't be a prob.
I'd recommend the 150bhp as opposed to 120
Very nice power for overtaking etc

I'm doing more mileage and I bought a Passat sport 1.9 130brake for 1500. 18000 miles into and no major faults regular serving and I had to fit a new camshaft and buckets and that's it. Will do 650 miles to a tank travelling mostly motorway at 85 or so mph
