No, Kevin.. it was Catholic Boys (called Heaven Help Us in the states). Good flicks with a young Matt would be The Outsiders / Rumble Fish.

Considering it's 30 years ago.. she's doing fine.

This teacher is still dishing it out! I never remeber anything like that when I was in school.

Did you attend school in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa?

The trouble is many kids are getting no discipline at home, and now none in school. Some teachers are even afraid to verbally discipline children
End result is a lot of kids who believe they can do what they want and feel like and no one can stop them
And that's because their parents got no discipline in school so some don't have it to pass on.

I'm 57 and even got canned in primary school.

I reckon that video is a fake. When I was at school, if anyone made noise when the teacher was beating someone , that person would get the same as the one who was being punished. It is also happening far too fast.

Not from school teachers no, my dad spent most of childhood beating the **** out of me, regardless of if I'd done something or not.

Teachers hitting kids is obviously wrong, although I'm too young to have any experience of it. However, we've gone too far the other way now I think, teachers are afraid to say boo to a bold child.

    No thank Christ.

If anyone ever hit my child with a cane, I hope they wouldn't mind me hitting them back with a bigger one

Yeah should especially beat all the lefties
    that's the devil's hand
I was regularly beaten by a nun for using my left hand (I was around 5 at the time) She also tied my left hand to the desk to top me trying to use it. It was the only time my mother ever came to the school. She had been made to change when she was a child and knew the damage it did.

That "holy nun " is one of the reasons I wanted to become a primary teacher - to show children that teachers could be different!

Nowadays the way teachers punish children with consequences and getting the parents involved straight away is the right way to go. IMO.
There are those parents who either won't engage or will not accept that little Asbo could do anything wrong, ever. This is where most issues arise.

Got hit in primary with a stick, cane, leather, drumstick (not chicken variety) fist, foot some combined and some individually.

Personally it did me a lot of harm and was something to work out as I got older so I wouldn't like to see it back

You must have been a right brat. When I was at school, only those who deserved it were hit.

How do you define "misbehaved?" Didn't know spellings? Not fast enough to stand in line?Spilled a drink?

We had the hands cut off us with a metre long thin bamboo cane by a vicious bastard of a headmaster. I was in that school from the age of 6 to 8.

I wasn't a messer of a child either. Tbh just thinking about it makes me angry.

No, but your idea of misbehaving is important to the discussion. You say someone must have been a "brat" for getting beaten.

In my time at school children who probably had dyslexia got leathered for not getting 20/20 in spelling tests, a child with a physical disability got punished for a drink spilling, a child with a stutter was slapped for not reciting a poem , I got beaten for using my left hand- are these misbehaving in your book?

That never happened when I was at school. I blame the parents.

Teachers should never ever be allowed to hit any child.

I was left handed and couldn't write fast enough before the rubbed the writing off the board, another incident was when I fractured my left wrist, the teacher would give me the leather because I had no homework done (couldn't write)

Didn't really take much to set them off and didn't learn much in that school

Yes I got a fair few slaps in my time from the nuns. This was late 80s to early 90s when it was illegal. It was for such things as colouring outside the lines, drink leaking, running in the yard. They were horrible nasty witches and such dreadful snobs. I wasn't from the right area and they were determined to find fault with me though I did very well and skipped classes - it seemed to infuriate them. I was too embarrassed to tell my parents.

I would never agree with a return of corporal punishment. I teach in a disadvantaged school now and there are significant disciplinary issues but I don't believe corporal punishment would have any positive effect at all. The main culprits are well used to getting clattered at home - it's just not a successful way of dealing with children and will never compensate for poor parenting. The laws around dealing with persistently disruptive students in schools and parents who fail to take responsibility for their children's actions need changing though.
