Have no problem with this decision at all - it's not the pinnacle of Golf to be at the Olympics.

I just wonder if he'll get the same amount of criticism Rory received last week about the decision? I doubt it

Shane is obviously not a true Irishman. If he had any pride in his nationality, he would be making the trip. I always thought he was a man who would do anything for his country. Oh how wrong I was. Shane, I am disappointed in you.

Offaly is known as The King's County... it's hardly a surprise. He must have taken the hump over Iceland beating them last night. Rabble, rabble.

I'm extremely disappointed in all three of the guys. I think the excuses are beyond pathetic. Wonder what they will come up with for 2020. Afraid of an earthquake or something like that.

I am really really glad now that I held off on buying tickets to the men's golf in Rio. Saved myself a good bit of money which I can use to support perhaps the hockey team instead, guys who are proud to be part of the greatest sporting event on the planet, and who don't need money to be motivated to achieve great things.

    Sad week for golf here.

They should scrap the golf at the Olympics idea anyway.... was always a silly idea for me, nevermind the Zika thing.

Majors are what they are motivated by. And rightly so. Maybe that will change in the years to come but for now, it's little more than a gimmick for them.

Could have been great had they made it a team event instead. Lost opportunity.

Well there may not be any years to come. Golf pretty much will get one shot before a decision on it's future is made in 2018. I believe these guys have let their sport down.

I don't think the Brazilians will care one whit how many golfers turn up. It's disappointing that Shane has decided not to take part, but it's hardly letting anyone down.

What's of more immediate interest is how good a fist he'll make of defending his WGC title this week.

Interesting to see the different in reaction to Lowry withdrawing compared to McIlroy and/or McDowell.

Difficult to understand why anyone would want to go play in Rio......

Doubt it.....it's already in for Tokyo, plus they're not going to take it out of the games due to be held in one of the most golf mad countries in the world who have put forward one of their best courses with a decent pedigree.

You do realise I was joking. We all know Shane is FAITHFUL to the core. I don't blame any of them for not playing.

Try putting yourself in Lowry's shoes. He's just got married. Rory and GMac have both withdrawn saying that they don't wont to put their partners and potential future offspring at risk.

Would you really turn around and say to your wife that you care less about her health and the health of your hoped for children than the other two guys do about their families?

I think the other two guys withdrawing put him in an impossible position.

    Very disappointed with the withdrawal.

    Knew Paddy wouldn't.

In fact had Shane in a similar sort of camp.

Reading the medical advice - I can't see any logic in anyone pulling out.

I know I'm in the minority. But that is my view.

As someone said - no female golfer has withdrawn - sums up how ridiculous the whole thing is.

You literally couldn't go anywhere if you live your life like that.
There was just a terrorist attack in Turkey - is Turkey off bounds now too.

Man makes decision to safeguard his future. It's not really for anyone to say what anyone else should or shouldn't do as regards to potential health/virus issues.

Wouldn't golf courses be much more likely to contain zika than most other event venues?

It's absolutely not on to have a go at anyone for not going. Is it disappointing? Yes. But fair play for making the right decision for his future while under pressure to go. That goes for all three of them.

That is fair enough - but if you are involved in a sport at a high level and choose not to take part in a big event. It will be questioned by the fans of the sport. Without fans these guys wouldn't enjoy the life they have. These are the people who love golf and Irish golfers and want to see Ireland win a gold in golf.

It will raise questions about golf in the Olympics these withdrawls.

Many other Olympians have now questioned that, considering that so many top golfers are withdrawing over a non issue.

This idea that fans can't talk about their sport , questions a choice, have an opinion - saying that it is "not on" is not on in my opinion.

Sport at a highest level has fans and supporters and views. It is about sharing them and opinions - we have full weekend extracts about sport from journalists - who don't even play the sports at present - we still love their views like Kimmage - Brolly - Walsh.

I hope this is not back seat modding - if it is, give me a card.

But I would hate if the forum became - lock a thread - shut it down , if any criticism is made of an Irish golfer.

I love Shane to bits - but he should be going to the Olympics. I'm very surprised he pulled out and I think it is a big mistake.

That may be "not on" - but you will read that on Sunday by award winning journalists.

Obviously there's debate and discussion on sport and I enjoy it more than most. What the hell are we doing here otherwise :pac:

It's a very interesting debate too and all I mean by saying that it's "not on" is because it's a personal decision for personal reasons rather than golfing reasons. Debating the sport and the knock on effect of the Olympics is huge as is discussing zika.

I would struggle to find a more patriotic person than Shane Lowry anywhere in the world. So if he's pulling out then his decision should be respected without anyone having a go.

Why are those pulling out in the wrong as opposed to those going despite the warning? Is that a responsible act? Things aren't black and white. I'd have loved to have Shane give gold a rattle but I'd rather he didn't do it at a cost to his future, potentially.

Look - If Graham - Rory and Shane maintain this lifestyle choice of not entering an area with a dangerous tropical disease for the next x period - I will eat my words.

But - somehow I do not see that happening.

    Best of luck to him.

I don't know if Shane is patriotic or not - it is a daft concept in a way - as it is easy to be patriotic - but to act it is a different thing.

I know with 100 % confidence Paddy would go - sure he is bringing his family and all.

I'm just saying I had Shane in that 95 to 100 % range. How wrong was I.

I can't recall exactly how it worked, but didn't golf bodies make a case to have golf included in the Olympics? In which case, golf does owe something to the Olympics, i.m.o.

Sure did and Harrington was a big part if it so one good to come out of it is him participating. He'll be knocking on seniors door come Tokyo. Maybe he'll play there as well, could be a sars or flu epidemic!

And that's the problem there, Harrington said as much on radio today in so much as the olympics isn't a priority for a large number of pros. Don't get me wrong he's delighted he's representing his country but the sad part was that for him if he was in China he'd mention on his "cv" that he was Olympic gold medal, then 3 time major winner as a gold medal is more recognisable. <Paraphrasing>

It's all about marketing yourself, sponsorship, being front and centre, so the $s come in. Slightly shocked that he was so open but that's just him I guess. More shocking about the numbers of males who have pulled out when you contrast it to the number of females who won't attend. Maybe pulled out is the wrong phrase in light of the reasons for them pulling out :pac:

It's in for Tokyo, but they decide 2 years before then whether it will be in for 2024 (probably Paris). Rio will determine whether Golf holds onto Olympic status post Tokyo or whether Tokyo will be the last.
