The one the Icelandic fans did during the game was amazing; you know, the one the builds up to a kind of growly whoop. Powerful.

In fairness, I think a lot of the England players weren't really aware of the consequences of playing poorly, and now that they've actually left the Euros, they're regretting playing so badly.

I think it's only fair to give them another shot at it.

To think that we could have played Iceland for a place in the semi finals if we'd hung on yesterday. :(

I think Id rather have played Engerland, Iceland are a much better team.

Iceland might be happy of the own goal they scored that made them second in their group instead of first. If they had won, they would have faced Belgium!

To be fair, they were saving themselves for the French match. The French match is the much more important one. I don't think they envisaged the possibility of it not actually happening.

One thing to remember about Steve McLaren is that he's a former England manager! Some of the guys the FA are entrusting with the job haven't a clue about football really.

England never fail to deliver when it comes to having knobend fans and overhyped aspirations at each and every major tournament.

Im going to start a petition to say that England didn't really mean it and they'd like another go

I expect I'll have millions of signatures by this evening

I don't think they'd risk getting embarrassed again.

Absolutely delighted with this. Makes up for the disappointment yesterday.

There might a good bit of money involved but I don't know why anyone would want to be manager of England

As Alex Ferguson said about the England Manager job "it's career suicide".

He's dead right, is a zero sum game, where anything less than a world cup or a euro championship will leave you vilified as a failure. The pressure is enormous and the backlash is inevitable. The scumbag press will blame you viciously as soon as something goes wrong, and the funny thing about it is, they don't seem to see that it is themselves who are the problem. (Well, they see it probably, but the press can't lose, if you win they whip up fervour and expectation, and sell papers, if you lose they excoriate you and whip up hatred, and they sell papers).

The irony on top of all this is that all this pressure and vilification actually makes it harder and harder to get top management candidates, even as expectations continue to rise.

I wouldn't play for them if I was an English footballer either, same reason. They don't get much money for participating with their team but get excoriated as pampered over paid prima Donna scum when they lose. As if their wages aren't just a reflection of the excessive fervour of those demanding fans in the first place.

Don't get me wrong though, it's hilarious. Especially the lack of introspection among fans and media. I don't for a split second imagine they'll temper expectations for the world cup. So we'll get to watch the implosion again. Yay!

It's as inevitable as the sunrise in the morning. I've been watching it since I was a kid.....crashing out of Euro 88, getting dumped out of Italia 90 by the Germans, not qualifying for USA 94 and getting roasted, Beckham being hanged for getting sent off in 98, crashing out of Euro 2000 in Holland, knocked out in 2002 in 1/4 final, knocked out in 2004 in 1/4 final, dumped out in 1/4 final in 2006, stuck at home in 2008, crash out in last 16 in SA in 2010, dumped out in 2012 in 1/4 final (do we see a pattern emerging here?), Not even getting out of the group in Brazil in 2014 and earning just 1 point, and now this gormless performance in 2016.

The result is always the same. If they qualify for a competition, which they generally do, then they crash out in the quarter finals or earlier, yet the press and the punditry is always the same too. "This could be England's year. Three Lions on a shirt. Football's coming home. Blah, blah, blah" Then they get knocked out like they always do at the same stage and they act shocked that they normally get further, a lot further, when in fact they are always sent packing before the heavies and one or two plucky minnows take over the show.
And then the finger-pointing starts, and a sombre Gary Lineker starts asking questions of his panel and what went wrong and who is to blame and what needs to change. And it never fucking does. They go into the next tournament thinking they are favourites and history just repeats itself.

Summed it up better than I ever could. They can't even blame it on penalties this time either.

Total poisoned chalice. The obvious perk though is the filty lucre you earn for even a small term.

They took it well I thought. Bitterly disappointed of course but full of kind sentiments towards Iceland.

Still in shock last night. Going out on penalties is one thing, but last night was one of the worst England performances in my memory. So glad Roy stood down, amd that there was no contract renewal prior to the Euros. Now Rooney needs to do the decent thing and step down as well.

Gonna take a long time to get over this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,899 ✭✭✭✭BBDBB

not sure shock is the reaction, I thought it was typical of England in tournament play, someone above went through the catalogue of tournaments where England have simply under performed.
Id also include Euro 96, their performance against Switzerland was poor, they narrowly squeaked past Spain on penalties
& Italia 90 - it took a last minute goal in a poor performance against Belgium and they were nearly beaten by a tenacious Cameroon side.

id say it was business as usual last night

The pundits and team definitely took it well, the moronic booing fans, not so much.

One thing that will always come out of these failures is that the manager, always the manager that is to blame. The players will never get stick, and by stick I mean just the conclusion that they weren't good enough or are not good enough period.

Didi's comments after the game were fantastic. He didn't hold back berating English football and simply told it like it is.

Roy Hodgson is an absolute spoofer. The FA just hosted a press conference in the last hour, where Roy had said on at least a few occasions he was not sure why he was there, as no longer manager.

Erm, giving the England Fans the explanation they deserve after one of the worst tournaments performances ever, yes even worse than WC 2014.
