How did I manage to cycle to & from school for 6 years (including home for lunch!!) I just jumped on the bike (in those days we called them 'racers') and off I went, no cleats, no clips, no fancy gadgets #nostalgia

What was your power output though?

Not very much I'd imagine Adrian, either on the bike or in the classroom :p

Maybe Aoife has a point so, I'll just go out and cycle and not bother trying to improve. And sure while I'm at it I won't bother improving my running either..

Ah, now here! They're only allowing you to go a bit easy on yourself (a bit of progress last weekend I thought ;) )

    Enjoy the new wheels.

Clearly that wasn't what was meant I'm sure. Bit unreasonable?

Let me put it this way. If someone new started running would you advise them to start poring over all stats regarding cadence etc etc? No, you'd probably encourage them to enjoy it, find their feet (wheels in your case), go easy and then as you build more into it start adding the other bits and pieces. Same thing I would have thought.

Anyway, enjoy the bike, it's a beaut. It's a great feeling flying along and once you build your confidence you'll be grand. Especially with your biking experience. I hear you on the cleats, they would scare me too but I'm sure it's just practice. Cycle safe!

Cleats and clips to lesser extent ensure you are powering on upward
movement so more efficient, but for nice leisurely cycle no need, only
if you are contemplating some competitive cycling ?

ha ha sorry I was being sarcastic :D

I think you all know me well enough to know I don't tend to do things by halves, I want to learn how to get the most out of the bike etc, Jake is right of course I could just take myself off to the cycling forum (I won't take that personally jake :p)

thanks for all the advice :)

I don't think it was suggested you shouldn't want to get the most out of your bike, certainly not by me or any other post I saw. Of course you should, that's fairly obvious in itself! Just an observation that there's plenty of time to build on it all, and the same advice you'd give to newcomers for running would probably serve for cycling too. Especially as your body may be still recovering/adapting.

Yes thanks Laura, you're right. Apologies if I was a bit sharp, I was feeling (unjustifiably!) a bit under fire yesterday, nothing to do with anyone here. A little break from the virtual world is probably in order. Happy running :)

Fair enough. As I said, I hope you enjoy it. Nice long evenings to take advantage of a spin up howth head at some stage or out to the phoenix Park I'm sure.

Good thing I was away last week I'd have defo gotten kicked out of here again with my views on all the bike malarky on the A/R Forum :p

Hopefully, you are still heading to Belfast at the weekend and we can catch in real world :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,009 ✭✭✭Firedance

Ha, thanks M, no need to worry about any more bike stuff on here, I'll do the honourable thing and take my bike off to the cycling forum :p

Update: ran a bit, cycled a bit, did some race support in Dunshauglin and today in Kilcock. Unfortunately my latest blood results (last week) were not good in that my thyroid levels are now far too low, to the extent that I could barley keep my eyes open at work. So I'm signed off work until next week and meds adjusted again, will see where I go from there then. This is fairly common apparently and is all related to getting the medication levels right, I have full permission to run/cycle/swim, I just don't have the energy!!!

I'm going to take an extended break from here though as for me there's too much not so nice stuff going on that I want no hand act or part in. It's a shame as boards is filled with lots of great people, unfortunately the few are (for me, which recent shenanigans) tainting it and I just don't have the energy..

To those of you running well, keep at it and well done!! to those of you struggling, keep working at it, you'll get there (TBL I'm looking at you....) and be grateful for every day you can lace up your shoes and run, its the little things in life that make us happy :) A massive thank you to everyone here for all your help advice and support over the last year. You guys rock, see you at a start line somewhere in the future and of course, there's always McGrattans on 30th October ;).

Special best of luck to everyone racing Belfast this weekend, Killerz, Ososolo, FBOT (enjoy!) and to the support crew, so sorry to be missing out.

    TTFN

Sorry to read that , I hope you get the health regulated soon . Can't say I know anything about the behind the scene politics here but you will be a big loss to this forum especially for those of us relatively new to running I really hope you will feel differently in a few days and reconsider your decision .

Whatever you do decide thanks for the advice and encouragement you have given to date it's really appreciated and I wish you all the best for the future .

Get well soon and mind yourself....

echoing much of what is said above - you'll be missed by many on the forum so please come back after a boards holiday! You are always so full of positivity, encouragement and good advice.

Also hope the next set of bloods show the thyroid levels starting to balance out a bit better :)
