Unbelievable that either Wales or Northern Ireland is definitely going to make the quarter finals. Debut tournament for both!

It's both beautiful and terrifying. Also well done Ireland.

Would Iceland have qualified for the second round if they had drawn?

What a night. Fantastic result and so good to see the team making such an effort. Far from pretty, but good.
I am trying to sober up before a 9:30 work meeting now....

Ok so Italy now have to play Spain, and then Germany if they win that.

Whereas if they had been beaten by 2-0 or more by Ireland, they'd have been playing Hungary and then the winner of Northern Ireland and Wales.

And they rested their best players. And they were a shadow of what beat the lard out of Belgium.

    I hope that's just a conspiracy theory...

Not correct. Italy had the group won and were playing Spain regardless. We all knew this on Tuesday night.

The reason is that they finished joint with Belgium on 6 points but the next decider is head to head not goal difference. Italy had beaten Belgium in the first match so that put Italy through in first place. That's why Italy rested so many players.

They would but they are a small country who just won their first game, I don't think they really care about who they get in the next round, that feeling of scoring a goal to win your tiny peripheral country their first ever game in front of millions of Europeans watching, that's enough:D

(If Iceland had drawn they would have been on the 'easy' side of the draw, paradoxically that goal put Portugal who finished in third with no wins into that position)

They'll need to do something because the country will shut down.

What would have happened if we had beaten Sweden? In terms of head to head, there would have been a triangle with the 6-point teams, so would head to head have been ignored in favour of goal difference?

Yes, if head to head is a three way like that, it's goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary record.

Someone broke out the champagne where I was. We looked ridiculous and now I'm in a hoop. It's what tournament football is all about.

As a life-long soccer fan who just hasn't got around to supporting the sport since Ray Houghton scored that goal in 1988, I decided to wander over to Le Monde for what the French were saying this morning.

What on earth are the Irish supporters trying to do with this car (1. 7 million views)?

This, from Bordeaux, is very good ("Hey, hey, hey, there's a baby - shut up or we'll box the head off the two of ye... What's the French for baby?... BAMBINO." hehe)

Loads more Irish-related videos here (just press 'ctrl', 'f' and type 'Irl' into the box)

Just watch the Ireland game again

Good man! I think something like this line-up will work well with cans

    1 - Reeling in the Years 1990
2 - Highlights of the game last night
    3 - Reeling in the Years 1994
    4 - Reeling in the Years 2002

It'd go to a three-way head to head. Basically, a mini group between the three teams involved and only taking into account their results. It happened in Euro 2004, where Italy, Sweden and Denmark all finished level. All the teams were level even within that tiebreaker, so Denmark and Sweden went through due to goals scored in the matches between the teams.

More recently in the 2013-14 Champions League, Dortmund, Arsenal and Napoli all finished on 12 points. Again, all had equal points against each other (two wins, two losses). Dortmund and Arsenal went through based on the goal difference within those matches.

It can bit a complex, but UEFA have it well organised. The list of tiebreakers is so long that a situation where lots have to be drawn to separate teams (as it was between us and the Netherlands in the 1990 World Cup) won't ever happen again. The team finishes above because of what it did on the pitch, be it results between, goals scored, disciplinary or even UEFA coefficient if all else fails.

We beat France, Iceland will beat England. That means one of the semi-finalists will either be Ireland or Iceland. :)

    last night. this morning. now.

I'm not just writing that I'm crying as a figure of speech. I'm actually crying. crying tears of joy.

I'll watch it again in an hour or 2, and I know I'll cry again.

This piece of audio recording needs to be kept & cherished for ever and ever. It wouldn't be out of place next to the Mona Lisa or David. It is Beautiful. It is Art. It is Joy.

    I'm 34. I'm still crying.

You should watch the video of the iceland commentary over the Brady goal :)

I nearly love Iceland now as much as Ireland after their heroics.
