Hopefully Germany slaughter NI to put an end to them, leaving us to beat the azzurri

Well Germany don't need to slaughter us (Norn iron) for you to proceed if you beat the Italians. We only have 3 points anyway. If we do get beat then it could come down to hoping the republic doesn't win against Italy, and that the Swedish don't beat the Belgians.

Amazing lot of possibilities. The Irish should both be praying for England to beat Slovakia and the Welsh not to lose against the ruskies.

Must be a statisticians wet dream.

Fair play to Britain for having 3 teams in the tournament.

    That's really impressive.

So, we know what we need/want to happen tonight.

England to beat Slovakia (I know, it does feel dirty writing that)
and someone to win the Wales/Russia game (in fact, even a draw between Russia & Wales will do)

this would guarantee the 3rd placed team in that group having no more than 3 points, meaning a win of any kind against Italy would see us through.

Are Italy a decent team, or do Ireland have a chance

Italy are a decent team. but they will make 6 or 7 changes for the ireland game. So we do have a bit of a chance, but I would not bet too optimistic given how poor we can play sometimes.
Dont be bothering Paddy Power with your money on ireland!

if italy needed a result from this game i wouldn't give ireland a hope, but the way things stand ireland have every chance of winning

italy have qualified for the next round already...so the question is...will they be arsed putting in an honest shift for this match??

Britain is an island consisting of England, Scotland and Wales. If people are going out to wind people up they can have a look at basic geography for a start maybe.

ah lets not split hairs...NI is british...(there fans like to think so anyway)

I think any teams fans playing Russia would be anxious at the moment. Anxious even within the stadium obviously which should not happen nowadays.

I didn't even know Russia was in Europe. Need more geography lessons. But it's mad that people would be bothered spending so much time and money travelling to another country just to be dicks

The problem with Italy playing their second team against Ireland is that the players will want to impress the manager and break into the starting team for the knockout rounds.

Northern Ireland could be on the receiving end of absolute battering from Germany. After drawing 0-0 with Poland, the Germans have to win and ensure a better goal difference than Poland to top the group.

Both Irish teams will be going home at the group stage I fear.

Yeah all this stuff about the Italians not being too bothered is hope winning out over realism to be honest. We'd be better off if the Italians did play their best 11, these subs aren't going to go through the motions just politely return to the bench in the knock out rounds. It'll be skin and hair stuff, and while I think we'll do well because when we have our back against the wall with nothing to lose we can be very game regardless of the opposition, you'll be against lads with a point to prove, who also have nothing to lose. Would be nice to get a draw, go home with our heads held up high. A win would be dreamland, but going in expecting one is not fair in terms of the expectations placed on the players we have.

Two draws and a hiding are not a hold your head up high set of results in my book

My €5 double went on England and Russia. Probably will be two draws so....

Then you didn't have realistic expectations coming into the tournament.

To paraphrase Churchill, you'd need a heart of stone to see the demise of this Russian team and not laugh.
