5 more holes than a normal round of golf. Somehow I think he'll manage

Fair enough. But the pressure of playing to win your first major on a tough course and having played 32 the day before and playing is what looks to be quiet warm conditions will be fairly tough I'd imagine.

    I'm too nervous.

Hopefully the good start to the day gives him some good momentum bur it's a course that takes no prisoners.

I'll have no finger or toe nails left.

Someone's just posted the final round pin positions on the US Open thread. All but one are very close to the edge of the green and it's going to make it very difficult to go for birdies. This may work in Shane's favour, or it may introduce an element of randomness that might allow someone to emerge from the pack.

After yesterday it was looking like a disastrous sporting weekend for Ireland... Wouldn't this more than make up for it. Come on Shane...

Well the rugby was disappointing rather than disastrous IMO, but yes, this would make up for everything!

    Bogey at 2nd hole.

Two gone already and lead down to one but its a crap shoot. If he can keep his head straight he is still in with a great chance.

Johnson is looking ominous. He's hitting the fairways from the tee and his length gives him a great advantage. Hopefully Lowry will come through and win though.

Wheels have come off would be a massive win from here now. DJ got a massive break on 10, everything going his way it seems.

Unfortunately Shane's touch around the greens deserted him completely when the pressure really came on. Such a pity as everyone was willing him to win, well everyone in Ireland anyway! I've no doubt he will make the 'majors' breakthrough one day though and it was still an excellent performance on a horrendously tough course.

I taught his touch was great around the greens his mid irons in, let him down and maybe some putts but he did sink some important ones early on! He nearly chipped in twice remember. Its hard to win a major in your first go been in contention though.. Just look at DJ for example..

Definitely think it will stand to him.

Yeah, I agree. His touch was fine. I thought he was a little cautious to begin with, and then he started to question distances, erring on the side of not going long, which you have to do there. He was just a little off all day on his approach shots, and that will catch up with you on the putting. Pity, he drove the ball excellently for the most part, and ordinarily would have given himself lots of birdie chances. As comfortable as he said he was on the course on round 3, he looked the opposite on round 4.

His approachs were fairly shocking I thought because he was hitting the fairway from the tee. Never gave himself any birdie chances bar the tap in on the par 5. What does it do for his world ranking and Ryder Cup chances?

He's up to 25th in the world rankings and 10th in both Ryder Cup points lists.

Can he get into the Ryder cup team as a captains pick?

I'd be surprised if he wasn't.

They are all out in Royal Dublin

For me it shows how hard they work at times. I went to bed at 2am and Lowry and jack were still on the tele in America. I woke up this morning big wrecked tired and straight away I see Rory, Shane and Jack all out in Royal Dublin doing corporate stuff....

I know they are well paid of course but that's still tough going fair play to them.

That's a tough corporate day for poor Shane

As Foreright mentioned, Royal Dublin. Big corporate gig hosted by a Chinese Airline. Fair play to Shane, I dont know how you can keep a positive demeanour after last night.

His first shot on the range was a poor one by his standard and it was the first time he hadn't a smile.

Those sponsor events go ahead win, lose or draw. Remember that when Rory won his first US Open in 2011, he was up at the crack of dawn on Monday morning to fly to a sponsor's event in an adjacent state. No doubt the sponsor and his guests were delighted when he showed up with the trophy but I'm sure Rory would have preferred an extra few hours in bed after the night before.

He might get a pick, but it would probably depend on who else was in need of a pick and how many rookies are already in the team. He's put himself in with a good chance of making it automatically though the world rankings points list if he can put together a couple more good performances over he next few weeks.

By the way, does anyone know if the Olympics will qualify for world ranking points?

Shane would have had to miss this one if it had been a draw. The US Open playoff would be on now!

Yes, if the captain picks him.

Lets not forget that Landry played so pooerly at the start and that would of had an effect on Lowry. Lowry would of been a bit longer than him so he'd be hoping for some idea of the way the greens were going watching Landry but he hit nothing. Looked like each hole was fairly slow moving an Lowry be a quick enough player

DJ had the same problem with Westwood

Lowry and 9 others pros (including McIroy willett, Westwood) played Royal Dublin today

Jack Nicholas was there but didn't play - a corporate event
