But it would be a fairly big insult to the PGA Tour and Bridgestone to not defend his title. And then even if he does compete at the French, how likely will it be that he will make the RC team anyway. Definitely a difficult decision for him.

Sponsorship deals to be considered too.
I don't think he is well enough established (or well enough connected) to be able to rely on a captain's pick.

    Not easy.

Yeah, I don't think he'll make the RC on merit and but reckon he should get a captains pick. Since winning last year, in every interview I've heard he's been determined to play in the RC and Olympics (he's nailed on for that however). He played the EurAsia cup. Couple that with the bonus you get for playing the French, I can't see him caring about what the PGA have to say.

I wouldn't be at all confident about him getting a captain's pick. The side is going to be short on experience as it is. I don't see Darren picking any rookies.

Absolutely no chance considering his match play record is quite poor.

He should defend the Bridgestone in my opinion. not that often he'll have the limelight of being the defending champion at WGC event.

I guess it'll be a hard decision for him to make but players prioritizing the Ryder Cup does my head in.

Agree. He has time enough to play in the Ryder Cup when he qualifies by right. I suspect Darren is telling him something along those lines.

Agree with you about Ryder cup, its of no more importance than the walker cup. And, Shane turned pro firstly rather than hang on as an amateur to play in WC after he'd won the Irish open.

The WC and RC are nice to have's rather than career defining.

From a golf fans point of view I couldn't care less about RC anymore now that its not on mainstream tv.

If you depend on "mainstream" (I assume you mean free to air) TV for your golf, then you don't see much golf.
Sky may over-hype everything but their coverage is excellent.

I think Shane is suffering from the trying to play on both tours syndrome and end up suffering as a result. Many before have suffered from it before.

I think I read on his Irish times page he likes to come home after a few weeks as misses home.

Can't be easy back and forward across the ocean.

Maybe he'll set up base next year somewhere in America and give it 100% and make the journey back to European tour for desert swing, after us open and after fed ex.

No chance of a pick at the moment

You're right, I dont see much tv golf, that doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I agree with you on Sky's coverage though too.

The fact that he is way down the pecking order for Ryder Cup qualification made the decision a bit easier.

Pity about the ryder cup though, thought he was a shoe in for the team at one stage.

Very unlucky with that putt on the 10th.

He's in with a brilliant chance now.

3 of the 4 closest players are perennial chokers in majors and the other is ranked over 600 in the world.

I wonder what affect having to go to bed knowing he's in the lead and still to complete the 3rd round and also would fatigue come in to play later tomorrow considering he isn't probably the fittest player in the world and having to play 23 holes tomorrow.

hope he pushes on and wins it out now

I would have worried about that a year or two back but he has improved a good deal physically and he has handled pressure pretty well before.

This is a potential life changer so it will be a serious test. But he has the game and temprament and 23 holes isn't like climbing Everest.

He played 32 holes yesterday...23 will seem like a walk in the park :)

I like the way he spoke about leading a major is where he wants to be.

5 more holes than a normal round of golf. Somehow I think he'll manage

He has played 14 holes so only 4 left on his third round, easier again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭Ben1977

It's a pity he didn't get finished yesterday as he was the only guy really with his eye in. He looked comfortable and like he was in total control. Lagged very well and his distance control was dialled in as they say.

If Shane does win tonight how does that affect his Ryder cup standing?

Straight in, probably no chance of him being pushed out of the 10
