The notion that we can get 3 points from the Italy game is rather quaint at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,845 ✭✭✭timthumbni

4 points will most likely be enough for youse to get through no matter the gd.

Norn Irons group will more than likely end with us in third place with 3 points. Youse would only need one of the other groups to end like that too and being that only the two worst 3rd place finishers doesn't progress then 4 points would and should be enough.

I can't see us (NI) getting anything from the Germans who are still playing for the points unlike the Italians who might send on some of their ball boys as they are finishing top irrespective and I can't imagine they will give a rats arse.

    Disappointing result.

Iceland hopefully to win against Hungary. Then Ronaldo Portugal to lose against against Austria.

    You'll never beat the Irish.

God that was depressing stuff, probably the most hopeless performance of the tournament, even Turkey had more of an attacking threat

Not really. The Italians are already through as group winners and have nothing to play for next wednesday. They are already looking ahead to see if they will playing Croatia or Czech Rep in the last 16.

Realistically, we've a next to zero chance of a win against Italy. Granted they'll probably put out a heap of subs, but they'll all be lads who are fighting for a place in the starting 11 and they certainly won't be afraid of the Ireland side they saw today. Disappointing.

Advert related, but why is that little bitch Emmett Kirwan of Dan and Becs fame voicing everything? 3, Supervalu, RTE. Is there no one else out there?!

    THESE.

    These are the questions.

    shocking display from portugal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,687 ✭✭✭andekwarhola

Safe to say we're not progressing.

Hard to point the finger at us that badly given our players at our disposal - apart from the shocking displays from McCarthy who is ostensibly a player in the top level of English football - and Belgium, on paper, are up in the favourites of the tournament with their players. And they turned up today.

The Sweden game is where we should have grabbed the points unfortunately and really should have.

Portugal were superb tonight. They are better than I thought they were before the tournament. When Ronaldo starts scoring (and he will) they will be very dangerous. They put most teams to shame with the amount of chances they create. Obviously they weren't converting those chances but I think playing Hungary next is a good team to remedy that. They'll hardly concede for the rest of the tournament aswell.

Would be one of the very few teams I'd fear (as a Spain backer).

Italy's fourth team would be on a par/better than ours but luckily football doesn't work like that. I don't think Italy will slaughter us or anything, we'll probably attack them and they will beat us 1-0 or 2-0 on the counter. We will look like we have put in a great performance because Italy will be happy to let us push on knowing we need to win the game.

I'm sure Conte already knows his starting xi for this tournament and will hardly completely change his team on what happens in the match against Ireland when there nothing at stake for the Italians. Why would he change his team when they haven't conceded a goal in their opening two matches. If it ain't broke why fix it?
I'm trying to be optimistic here!

I doubt footballers can even go easy, you don't get to where they did without being super competitive so I'm very surprised to hear pros talk about this like it is a thing as if the Italian players won't be bothered. I think on the RTE panels part they are overrating the Irish team and underrating the second string Italy team as a reason for optimism.

    I'd agree with all this.

We could probably play that Belgium team every day for a week, with different tactics and personnel each time, and lose every game.

They're just better than us. So much better than tactics wouldn't make a difference. I think it will be much the same against Italy, second string or not. We'll plod along fairly ineffectively until they a goal, and the game will peter out after that.

I didn't even feel that bad after the game yesterday - they're just a better team, and that's that. I felt worse after our failure to beat a Sweden team that are just as mediocre as us. That was our chance, rather than needing 3 points against Italy or Belgium.

And, given the complete lack of quality players coming through at underage levels, this is as good as it will get for quite a while.

That's the sad thing like, back in 2002 we had five champions league level players and now we have lads lucky to get a game for Stoke or whatever. The talent pool just isn't there and there's not much on the horizon.

Since they have qualified for the next round they may put on the reserves. And they'd be looking to shine for a place in the first 11

A Romania- Albania draw or Albania win should be first on your wish list. As it is for Us in Norn iRon.

Plus the French to absolutely hammer Switzerland as well, just in case...
