In the past it was distributed by people with links to the IRA as a means of revenue generation. A nice story about it is the one of the farmer using it after it was banned, acquired from an IRA source, that found it was only milk replacer he had been using. I bet the customer complaints division didn't entertain his disgruntlement!

A not so nice story of a guy that didn't clear his account with these individuals, who was subsequently knee capped, and he bleed to death.

Mid-Tipp? If so, I am familiar with the event.

How does growth on Angel Dust compare to the old bullet behind the ear that was being used in the 70's, I remember we were using that back then and my god the growth rates were amazing, cattle were wild though.

This is coming up on the bottom of Agriland as suggested reading.

What was that old bullet behind the ear?

In fairness it wouldn't be proper jiggery-pokery in the beef industry if Larry Maith An Fear wasn't tangled up in it somewhere

Banned nearly thirty years at this stage.
Although I remember going on a Macra tour to Belgium several years after growth promoters were banned in Ireland. We attended the cattle market in the Brussels suburbs, and a beef factory, and every animal there was still getting hormones. In the shadow of the Berlymont.

How long after they got the angel dust would it still turn up in the meat?

I think they test the retina of the eye, seemingly it never leaves.

And for the general public reading this was perfectly legal at the time.

And still is in the USA and South America.
Which raises some serious concerns regarding TTIP trade talks.

The problem with the use of growth promoters was the lack of adherence to withdrawal times. There was evidence published at the time that compared to meat from animals where the times were observed, there was more hormone in female cattle slaughtered while bulling, cabbage, eggs... etc.

Is it random testing that showed this up or are all animals tested?

I don't think LG would have anything to do with angel dust , why would he and us throwing as much beef at him as he wants without ever having to break rules ? By God he will knock great spin out of it for himself though and it won't slow him down an ounce .
As someone said its always up that neck of the wood something like this happens , I could be way out but would love to know is there any connection between this and the fella charged with stealing the cattle ?

Without commenting on cases before courts; there is a common thread from the Angel Dust years ago upto today.

Angel dust travelled countrywide. Some merchants used other products as loss leaders and made the big margin on the dust. Dangerous stuff, a few lives lost.

I think if my memory is right, the meat is darker.
Angel dust was the purpose of the original special unit in the Dept of Ag.

How were the lives lost with it ?

As Greysides said, dangerous in powder form. Easily inhaled and overdosing yourself it seems.
But if you want your Fr bullocks to look like Ben Johnson, no better stuff.

Very true but you need to be of a certain vintage to know who Ben Johnson is:D

Ralgo and Finaplix and no problem holding the ear, pointing the needle into the spot and pulling the trigger.
We never had a problem with wild cattle but I did have a personal problem (miscarriage) due to seepage of Ralgo hormone.
Edit - For some mad reason I kept one of the Ralgo cartridges (round plastic cartridges) in the pocket of my fleece for several weeks because there was 4 or 5 shots still left in it. At that time my Obstetrician reckoned that the hormones seeped into my bloodstream and probably caused the miscarriage.
