Hard to see past the big guns as usual but my outside bet will be Croatia

Laugh away. But we can win it. So my pick is France and we will get to semis

    We can't really can we.

Hard to think of a team outside greece that didn't have a top midfield player or forward.

And in hindsight - I'd say Greece were up to their eyes in epo etc.

Denmark. They didn't even qualify and ended up winning it.

Being the "9th best" team in Europe, Denmark were in with a shout from the off even though it was a surprise. Hard to image a Euros only having 8 teams now.

I think Greece's win was a bigger shock, they won it with Samaras and George Clooney in goal.

Smart money has to be the Germans, Croatia to be the darkhorses.

    Different tourney back then alright.

As I said Croatia one to watch

Was looking back over 88 again there - it was an incredibly difficult tournament back then.

Ireland's achievements were incredible for first time out.

In a group with the eventual winner and finalists - missing out on a semi by 10 minutes with a woefull fluke of a goal.
    - And McGraths header - how on earth it didn't go in.

But sure we rode our luck big time against England - luck should all work out in the long run.

It could be our one and only time of getting a chance of a semi final.

We got an unrealisitc expextations from that team.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_1988#

Interesting it was 2 pts for a win - 1 for a draw.

Interesting it was 2 pts for a win - 1 for a draw.

Was the same for Italia 90, we got to a quarter final without winning a match in real time.

I did love that team of 88 to 94, not sure if it's my age or a generational thing but I can't seem to find any empathy for this current team, tbh I couldn't really care if the win, lose or draw.

Let's pick a winner of the euros!

Think it's between France, Germany and Spain. I'll pick Germany.

    Over to you folks!

I have to say - I have always got behind the Irish team - but there is something very likable about this bunch - likes of Long , Brady, Walters, McCarthy, McClean.

We know it is not the most gifted team ever - but they are a real "team".

I know at a major at this level that is not enough - but it can get you a result against a flaky performance. of a big team.

Sadly we are in a shocking group - look at every other group you would fancy a win.

But this team has a big win in them (imo).

I always watch this before a big event like today. I never fail to shed a tear especially with the raw emotion from the old man after the peno shoot out win. He'd waited his whole life to witness us do something special.

I was so pessimistic going into the last euros with trap... Feel so optimistic(rightly or wrongly) with o Neill and Keane looking after us...

Please give us any result tonight to get us rolling!

The excitement, the bunting is up the tension.... Let's do it!

Please please please over the next 3 weeks even just give us one day.... One day where we can dream and forget all our troubles.... We can do it!

    COYBIG

    RIP Bill

Yes . It highlights for me that soccer is the only sport that totally gets everyone in the country. You can only imagine what it would be like if we had a few stars in the squad like in 88 and 90s.

I know we are up against it. But you see from golf and sport . Positivity works.

    As Foreright said
Different feeling with oneil and keane.

3 resounding defeats. We haven't progressed much, if any, since Trap.

Yes we don't really have players that much ahead of last squad . ?

An argument could be made for Mccarthy. Long Walters coleman

But in last squad you had keane , Dunne, duff .

But we seem to have more regulars I'm premiership in this team.

But open to views on that.

Why so negative in a positive thread!?

We can get a draw and win and after that lets put it up to Belgium!!

No, we just try a bit harder under the current management. With Trap he sucked the life out of the team, I don't see why we cannot get a draw tonight and have a go at the Italians! Belgium may be a bridge too far!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,111 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Look your supposed to be positive and get behind your team irrespective of who is playing.

Northern Ireland are brutal. But I'd still rather be at it.

We just dont have a player of a generation at present and we have had that for 50 years now.

    So

I jest Keano, both you and Roy are different men now that you're in positions of power ;)

I hope we get something but I really don't think we've progressed much at all. I would only consider it a very slight improvement on Trap, who brought us to one finals and was robbed of another.

    Anyway, back to the party.

By the way. Would have absolutely no problem backing against Ireland.

    There is heart and mind.

And on the party . There is nothing wrong with a party.

I respect Roy Keane and love him a little. But he can be a miserable fecker himself.

You can see why he has been unsuccessful as a manager.

Built on Traps solid foundations Keano. We were a 90th minute goal away from beating Italy (World Cup holders at the time) in Croke Park and got a draw away. We very nearly topped that group. An injustice against France was the only thing stopping is from Qualification.

Poor auld Trap got a hard time, he steadied a sinking ship and over delivered based on the players he had. The media turned on him and that was that. Pity 2012 itself was a disaster, that group had 3 serious teams in it.

Starting to get in the mood for it now all the same :) Give us a blast of Joxer, Fixie.

Trap in a way did get a hard time but it was just a job for him, he put very little effort going watching players etc

It's not about Trap today it's a new era so lets hope we can get off to a good start!

They didn't have a shot on target? Game we should have won

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭ForeRight

The negatives: we were not capable of grabbing the game by the scruff when leading. A worry for future games

The positives: we have a point, played well and no matter what against Belgium we will go into the Italy game with everything to play for and we can go for it to qualify.

I seen that stat but thinking about it I'm not so sure. I seem to recall Randolph pulling off a great save early in the second half.

That was from Clarke's first attempt at an OG (not a shot on goal).

We barely touched the ball for 20mins after we scored and you could see there goal was coming. They may not have had a shot on target but randalf had to make a big save, zlatan got ahead of Clark and just slid one past the post and the ball was flashed across the face of goal on more than one occasion where it was hearts in mouth stuff for us.

We probably deserved to win but I just wouldn't go as far as saying we dominated the game.
Domination is what Spain did today t the Croats yesterday. They owned the ball for 90mins
