    Ghost in the Shell
    Toy Story 1 + 2

I'd also say Ghost in the Shell, followed closely by Toy Story 1/2 (not sure which I prefer), although tbh I'm a sucker for CG films.
Nemici you're missing alot, see Ghost in the Shell ASAP!

    spirited away , clearly.

i didn't really like GitS and akira tried to cram so many volumes of manga into one feature length film.. just didn't work

    Hmm...

    Ghost In The Shell
    Akira
    Blood: The Last Vampire
    Lord Of The Rings
Titan AE was pretty good also, pity it bankrupted the company.

I'm sorry but i'm not a fan of animé or manga.

    Ghost in the Shell
    Blood: The Last Vampire
    Ninja Scroll
    Akira

Could watch those all day tbh.

Easily Akira, aint seen the LotR animated yet tho.

Best animated movie? That's a very good question tbh.

I wasn't particularly blown away by Akira, probably because of all the hype. Apart from that I haven't seen much Manga (except for some really dodgy toon-porn a mate of mine bought somewhere... forget what its called, but it's like a cross between Dragon Ball Z and, erm, porn).

I remember thinking Disney's Beauty and the Beast had some great animation, but in the interest of not sounding like one ah dem homer-sexual's, I won't nominate it

Noone's mentioned The Lion King? The last good Disney film IMO.

Couldn't possibly pick a favorite actually. Far too much to chose from.

South Park the movie deserves a mention though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭ObeyGiant

I absolutely love Monsters Inc, and I'm a little disappointed that it's not been mentioned already.

There were two relatively big name animations that blew me away recently, mainly because I wasn't expecting much of them.. the first was the Iron Giant. I thought the animation in this was fantastic, and it played my heartstrings like a pro.

The other was the Emperor's New Groove. The animation in it isn't the best you'll ever see.. like an even more stylised Hercules, but the characters in it are top-notch. Kronk (played by the same guy who does Joe (the wheelchair guy) in family guy, and he played the Tick in the live action series) is one of the best henchman I've ever seen, and his conversations with the squirrel had me in tears.

I also think Ruairi Newman's short animations are worth a mention, too.

there is not contest whatsoever, Spirited Away is simply head and shoulders above anything that has ever been made.

shrek in second and then the rest of pixars work comes in third.

hmmm toy story 1+2 is definite.:D

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm because I am a sucker for anything Batman related.

It definately was the best kids cartoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

    In no particular order:

    Shrek
    Akira
    Princess Mononoke
    Toy Story
Transfomers (just because it is Transformers :) )

Havent actually seen Toy Story 2. I gave my sister Monsters Inc and Ice Age last Christmas and I still havent gotten around to watching them.
Still waiting for the region 2 release of Spirited Away, if there ever is one.
Also, although I enjoyed Blood the Last Vampire, it felt more like and episode than a film. Maybe it's the shortness, but I kind of felt disappointed it ended so soon.

Deffo Princess Mononkee for me.Just Amazing

This is meant to be by far the best manga movie, better than Akira. I havent seen it yet though. My favourite was Street Fighter 2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,856 ✭✭✭Clover

toy story then Final Fantasy for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭Wolf

    Megalopalis or Akria.

James Cameron said megalopalis was one of the best movies he had ever seen and I have to agree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

metropolis was ok, but the cg was waaaaaaaaaay ott. GitS use of cg was much better, subtle and not noticable unless needed be.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

Metropolis used the CG in that way on purpose - I thought it worked pretty well really, as a style decision.

In terms of my own favourites...

I'd have to pick Laputa: Castle in the Sky. I can't look up at a cloudy sky without thinking of that film - it's just one of the most magical things I've ever watched, and the music (Joe Hisashi was the composer on that and several other Miyazaki movies) still sends shivers down my spine.

Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are also absolutely fantastic, and both so very different. I felt that Mononoke lost it a little bit at the end, but was a wonderful film in general... Spirited Away was just like being a child again, the whole thing was just so joyous and magical. Some Disney films can convey that feeling to children; Miyazaki unerringly manages to convey it to adults as well. The man is quite probably the greatest film director of our time, or indeed of all time.

I'd also have to throw in a mention here for Escaflowne (the movie version, not the TV series obviously). Dark, stylish and really stunning looking, but the plot is a little disjointed. Yoko Kanno does the music, which is a huge bonus - and she's the link with my final pick, which is Macross Plus, a fantastic story that shows up just about every similar movie ever done in live action. Top Gun? Feh!

Alladin owns me, but id have to go for a Miyazaki - a toss up between Princess Mononoke and Naussica. Although even as I write this, i find myself wanting to put a few other ghiblis in the mix. Theyre all win.

Thundercats: The Movie was hilarious, but im not sure it was meant to be...

    Toy Story I & II.
And, A Bugs Life, what a classic? I watch that one over and over again. 'Ur Fiiyart!'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭Kairo

Spirited Away is a certain contendor (altho I haven't watched it in proper quality yet) and It should definately could a cinema release over here.

Princess Mononoke would probably be the best I've seen. I'd have liked to have heard its original voice overs, even tho the english cast was very impressive. :)

ww) < what the hell is that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 815 ✭✭✭Bannor

    1) Ghost in the Shell - Purely because it's the anime movie that inspired the Matrix creators
    2) The Iron Giant
    3) Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within
    4) Toy Story
    5) The Nightmare Before Christmas
    6) Fantasia

    Toy Story
    Shrek
    The Jungle Book
    Toy Story 2

Other Animated Films worth mentioning are Lion King, Dumbo, Aladin, Akira.
I'm sure I'm forgeting some. Ah well..

    Just some to mention:

    1. The Lion King 1 & 2
    2. Toy Story 1 & 2
    3. Shrek
    4. Atlantis
    5. The Road To Eldorado

And one of my all time faves:

Beauty And The Beast - fantastic :)

    The Iron Giant

Ice Age cracks me up every time

Now I don't know if anyone here saw Ice Age in the cinema, but it was preceded by an animated short film called "For The Birds", and that truly has to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

id have to agree with shinji that monoke looses it towards the end..
    the animation is gobsmacking though..

blood the last vampire was good but it was seriously disjointed,
    cool atmosphere. .

    akira wins. .

It preceded Monsters Inc. as well (and it's on the DVD), I very nearly died laughing. The bit were they realise that pecking the big bird's feet might not be such a good idea is genius.

My overall favourite would probably be Shrek though I loved Princess Mononoke and Ghost in the Shell. Purely I think for the memories of going to see Shrek with eight of my closest friends not having a clue what it was about and laughing from start to finish. Then laughing for a few more hours in the pub afterwards, stopping then starting again anytime someone shouted
    "Give him the chair!".

A good time had by all.
