My ping seems to be in the bad region again, getting lot of variation usually 200 + to uk server and even 150-200 to boards.ie

    Intermittently get like 60ms pings...
is it just me or is everyone else also getting these pings?

I really hope that this isn't a case of we celebrated too soon with netsource :(

I mean the service has been " good " for less than a week if this continues..

p.s. i'm on the blanch exchange.

My pings are now >130ma compared with last weeks improved <35ms pings.

Could we be back to 'normal service' ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 852 ✭✭✭m1ke

I just checked now, and it looks like the ping has gone ropey again 200ish. Everything else about the service seems fine for the minute - the downloads are grand. I don't play games anymore, but this time last year I played a load of quake3 and can sympathise.... because a 200 ping would have been totally unplayable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭Memnoch

well if this situation continues i would love some sort of explanation from netsource....

pings were fine for all of 3-5 days... and now... here we go again....

i guess we shouldn't jump the gun maybe this is a temporary problem only, but i'm a bit shaky after past ping problems with netsource :P

ive mine up and running too, the tracert looks something like this: 1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms rfc1918.space.should.not.be.used.on.publicips [

i guess we'll have to give netsource a ring tomorrow and see what the story is, lets hope its only a temporary situation.... either way i would like some kind of final word from netsource on this...

either a) sorry this is how its gonna be just deal with it or leave

or b) we will do everything to make sure u recieve decent quality service ;P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭Memnoch

getting decentish pings again.... i'll be up for a couple of hours anyways so i'll keep checking periodically...
fingers crossed maybe it was just a temp thing :)

My pings were grand a few hours ago but now they are really jumping around. In 5 tests to the same server 1 after another I got: 119ms; 51ms; 67ms; 141ms & 106ms.
I really hope they sort this out because last week I was getting between high 30's and low 40's :( I might give them a ring tomorrow and see what they say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭Memnoch

yup pings seem extremely unstable atm .. oh well nothing to be done for now i guess, just gotta hope it settles on its on, or will have to wait till tomorrow to find out.

Johnk pls let us know what they say if u speak 2 em

lol :D So it was all your fault?!?!? :p:p
My pings seem to have settled down now and over 5 tests to the same server are averaging at: 53ms; 48ms; 46ms; 48ms & 50ms

Yeah last night til about 2am they were really bad. Hopefully just a glitch in the matrix. *fingers crossed*

pings are fine here. Does anyone else notice a spike of lag for about 2 seconds once a minute with netsource? I'm getting the spike all the time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,127 ✭✭✭STaN

yea i get it. Every 60seconds a jump to 250ms

Yea, shouldn't the pings be as low as andos. Not 60ish!
Anyway, I downgraded my 1mbit to 512kbit (well it'll take 10 days cause they're EIRCOM...)

Was the 1mb service crap or costly or what.
Id imagine really struggling to downgrade BB.

Couple of suggestions to help you help yourselves.

    1. Post Traceroutes rather then Pings, you can tell more from them.

    2. Rate Adaptive will probably always be sketchy for gamers because of our sensitivity to latency.

    3. Time is a factor. The time of the day that you take these readings at is important. I'd imagine at 2am you will get great pings and at 7pm you wont. Thats my guess.

    DeV.

Is anyone going to contact netsource on monday about the bad pings agian??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭satchmo

Damn right, I've had enough of this shit. It'll be at a steady 40ms for one minute then up around 200 the next, and always a crappy 10-15kbps download. If this keeps up I can see Netsource losing a hell of a lot of customers at the end of their 2-month contract.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭-ADREN-

my god so the netsource service has gone back to its crappyness or is that just for people in certain areas?? Or perhaps with a bad dsl line if there is such thing :/?

It's RADSL. You're never going to a perfect connection all the time. My pings do shoot up to 200+ occasionly during peak hours, but right now I'm downloading at 55Kb/s and pinging jolt at an average of 44ms. The vast majority of the time I get these speeds, so I'm pretty damn happy with netsource. I can live with occasional lagging.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Is there ever any packet loss when pings get that bad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭Memnoch

pings continue to be crap :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭D-Generate

I'm on the ADSL product of Netsource and yesterday evening the pings were again terrible. Other than yesterday they have been pretty good and at 12 o'clock last night I was pinging netsource.ie at 25ms. I can only assume that we have a huge Sunday Surfer using my exchange (Douglas, Cork)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭-ADREN-

    Yes, usually 10-30%

Wow that is bad, seriously bad. I was getting packet loss of 1% and complained to netsource, now it's down to 0.001%. Tbh packet loss pisses me off far more than high pings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,127 ✭✭✭STaN

If you take a look at my ping plots in earlier threads the red lines indicated times of packet loss. It was not a constant packet loss.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭-ADREN-

damn now im really annoyed.. should i bother getting it or not.. has anyone rang netsource with the crap pings and downloads again?? .. Is everyone gettting the same crap.. or is it just a few uesers?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 113 ✭✭Lockup

It seems to be back to square one with Netsource. 250-300 pings on UK servers. Tracerts and pings the stuff legends are made of. Download speeds 25kbs. I had all this for 2 days when I first got the service and its back again. Your fix didnt fix it!!!

I thought that RADSL meant that you weren't guaranteed the full 512k down, that it depended on how far away from the exchange you were. Also NetSource had acknowledged that they had this problem before in that they did not have sufficient bandwidth between Eircom and their routers. Also I don't think this is a contention issue since I know of only 1 other person who is on the Finglas exchange (if there are others let me know).

Anyway, it's nearly 10pm and still getting crap pings. Here's a traceroute:
    Tracing route to clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms rfc1918.space.should.not.be.used.on.publicips

    9 232 ms 218 ms 229 ms clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11]

    Trace complete.

To be honest I don't so a whole lot of downloading, but I am a big gamer (well I was hoping to be anyway). I wonder would ESat have better pings (I know it's basically the same product NetSource are selling), since as a major Telecoms provider they would have oodles of bandwidth that could be used for the link between Ericom and the ESat routers.

It gotten worse for me over the last few days too. My download speeds are down from 50k to about 20k and my pings are terrible. Its averaging at 199ms to jolt.co.uk and 181ms to the Netsource dns server! This is just crap!

It looks like Netsource have sorted out their Irish routing problems...

over a maximum of 30 hops:

    2 38 ms 31 ms 27 ms rt001kil.netsource.ie
    3 32 ms 30 ms 31 ms 193.1.208.204
    4 29 ms 32 ms 31 ms s1-0-0-acc-2.IE.COLT.NET

    6 33 ms 28 ms 28 ms 217.114.160.43

I'm on the Finglas exchange as well since i got Netsource on May 17th.
It has been constantly good for me since day 1, downloads are in 54kb/s anytime of day , no probs whatsoever. :)

However pings were terrible like everyone else before they fixed it that friday and has been circa 40ms to boards since then, even lower to clarity server.

There must be other conditions affecting as to why other users get such crappy downloads/pings

    If people did:
    ping -n 1000 www.whateveraddresstakesyourfancy.com

You'd be able to get clearer results rather than just doing 4 pings at a time all the time.

Also, if on Win2k or XP, use pathping instead of traceroute. Takes longer, but will tell you where the packet loss is happening - if any....

Damn looks like I'm going to have to start thinking about moving on again, I really thought Netsource had solved the problems in this service, but I guess I was mistaken.
    To quote myself

    :(
