Elliptical cross-trainers

Any thoughts on elliptical cross-trainers? I'm looking for a single machine for home. A rowing machine would be too big, a treadmill too noisy for people living below and I don't like bikes.

Steppers are OK but I've noticed these cross-trainers on the Net. Haven't used one though.

I'm looking at this Reebok machine (Reebok Vector RE3000 Elliptical Cross Trainer) in Argos.

Anyone here tried one? How is the build quality? Does the magnetic resistance mean it is quiet?

Any comments on the value of cross trainers for exercise generally?

I'd rate the rower highest ... you sure it is too big? But again they make a good bit of noise.

Eliptical runners are very good in my opinion. As someone who dislikes heavy impact running, I found them a good way to train up running fitness without having to worry about impact related pain or injury.

Not too big, perhaps, but I would consider a smaller footprint as an advantage.

I like the sound of that. I'll try to see a few tomorrow. If I buy one I'll post a review.

    Thanks, Jak.

Sorry for dragging up the old post, but having just seen a special offer in the RTE Guide for an OrbiTrek elliptical trainer (which according to amazon.com reviews falls apart in a month), I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good elliptical trainer and what's your thoughts on them in general?

Hi, sorry if this comes up on another thread, I think I messed up posting it! Looking for an exercise bike (or elliptical) for a pressy, and I don't know what to get - saw a link to vjhomefitness, and these seem to be the options -

Discovery Cross 7 Elliptical Crosstrainer = 449 (think this was on another site)

    Discovery 709 = 649

    Discovery HM-6016 Magnetic (elliptical) = 289

    Discovery HM-6015 Mag Cycle = 259

    Discovery Bike 7 Programmable = 349

    Grand Stone D-10 Ergo Bike & Top-Sport XL-1 Spinner = 399

Does anyone know about these? Is the 649 price worth it? Dont want to get her something that she will be bored with v quickly! No room for treadmill or rower. Any ideas good!

I recently (last week) purchased a York x730 eleptical trainer and I finf it to be of a high quality.
It was about 600 in Argos but I found it on the net for 455 inc delivery.

Got it the other day. Assembly was easy enough.

One thing to note. If you are used to the ones in the gym then you may be a little disappointed at how much more difficult the workout is !!

The larger wheel on the ones in the gym obviously gives the whole thing more momentum and makes the workout easier.

I used do 30 mins easy enough in the gym but 15 mins on the York is just as tiring !!

    Mike.

What online store would you recommend to buy an Elliptical Cross-Trainer?
    The UK websites
    http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk
    http://www.Gymworld.co.uk

HAve got good prices but the reviews say they dont take faulty equipment back that you have to deal with the manufacturer directly if there are any problems...
With Murphys law and all that dont know if I want the hassle!

    Any recommendations?

With heavy equipment, I'd tend toward buying Ireland instead of online from abroad. vjhomefitness might be worth a look. Maybe Boru could do you a deal if he's still in Arnotts....

I'm afraid I am long since resigned from Star Fitness, but they do have great products. I'd persoanlly steer clear form anything with the words discovery and york in it, but thats just me being picky and wanting equipment that deosn't break down in six months. :D

Your best bet is to call Star Fitness in Bray ,on 01-2828212 and ask for Colm or Tony. If you mention you know me they should be sort you out. ;)

Alternatively check out the website at www.starfitness.ie

    Hope that helps.

For gym equipment i generally buy stuff from York ( see link). i dont buy anything big, like all in one multi-gyms etc, but their stuff is generally good value for money and reliable. they have a UK discount wearhouse in the UK (not sure where) but im sure you can find out if you google it. cheers

Here's a decent list of elliptical cross trainer shops online

I presonally can recommend either Amazon or Sweat Band Fitness. Decent prices and delivery.

Brands, i agree with rugbydave that york are a good brand especially if you are new to buying gym equipment and want a household name that you can be safe in knowing your getting a decent quality product.

Just read reviews and compare prices as there can be some great discounts and money to be saved. There are some elliptical cross trainers with price comparison and review on the website above and also on the retailer websites themselves
