Have you ever seen what you would identify to be a ghost?
I never believed in anything like that at all until I saw an old man in a green aran cardigan in my sitting room. I told my mother and she said it was the man who lived in the house before us. My house was built in the 20's and there have been one or two strange things sighted.
A friend of mine works in the Powerscourt Towncentre and everyone from the security guard to girls who work in the shop have seen something in there.

Never seen them but I am sure that the spirits of every living being that has lived are floating around in this world and some may have even escaped the atmosphere. Some may be living inside you and some may be resting on that sandwich that you were thinking about eating earlier on.

Our very physical makeup is a combination of stardust and ex-living beings. We are all ghostly stars.

I heard there is mathematical proof that there more dimensions exist than we perceive so perhaps something exists within those dimensions, it doesn't have to be your stereotypical casper.

I seen a documentary on the discovery channel a while back. Basically if you stand at a precise point, the earths magnetic field interferes with your brain causing you to see somethng which is not there. Its all to do with physics, kids.

Never seen one but i'm still frightened of the dark, nonetheless, and i sleep with a nightlight even though i'm 59 years of age.

There is believed to have been 11 dimensions at the big bang which folded in on themselves during the huge explosion :/

Funny the things you learn when your Physics teacher has a doctorate.

P.s thats probably just a theory though.

I know mathematics proves they exsist but when you say folded over on themselves are they inverse of someat? My theory is that what we perceive as "ghosts" could possibly be dimensions conjoining in one point in space at some time or another, and revealing perhaps what entities exist in them, or it could be just be just a figment of the individual's imagination *shrug*

I have never seen a ghost. But I think most of it is a play in lighting. I was once driving on a dirt road in the rainy fog. My headlight flew across a puddle and illuminated the fog around it looing just like a scary ghostly figure? I knew what it was but it still scared the hell outta me? I have a tendancy to not believe in anything like that?

Ive heard lotsa stories about Banshee's.. some are old wives tales, some would send shivers down your spine, but who knows what they are...

My dad grew up in the country side in the midlands and there were all sorts of stories there, one about a guy who was from that area, walking home one day through the fields after work and he found a comb on the ground, a very ornate black comb and he didnt think much but brought it home to show his wife and family...

That night they supposedly heard the wails of a banshee near the house and its kept happening for a few nights... one night the comb was on the window sill and a boney hand apparently came through the window in plain sight of everyone, took the comb and that was the end of the wails...

probably complete crap but, when you were kid listening to stories like that, it frightened the bejesus outta ya.. :D

I went to bed after reading this thread last night.

I fell asleep bout two o' clock and I was having a lovely dream about nekki ladies and I suddenly woke up at about half three. I swore to god that I could plainly see the figure of a man standing at the end of my bed. I turned around to turn on my lamp and it was gone.

That scared the living **** out of me as you can imagine. I actually almost **** the bed. I had to get up and have a look around the house just in case (weird **** does happen round here, more weird people than things) and I didn't get back to sleep for about an hour.

I am convinced the only reason was that i had read this thread and that subconciously I was still thinking about it. I was wide awake when i saw this but it must have been purely psychological because the room was pitch black at the time.

I think people get smart, and they start to not believe in them anymore, and then maybe they fade away, but the older people who think that they should hear something, most likely do.

Sometimes at night I hear something and/or see a shape/outline of something, but it could be something you see from a dream that you brought into reality. This could be the time where you are in a light sleep and easy to awake.

    But..

People who see what others see, now I do believe this.

Just at the top of the hill, afore you go down theres a house, thats been empty for years and no one will buy it. You can see shadows and weird stuff movin about. Dad used to go on about it (he passes thru slane alot) then it was on the gerry ryan show.

Yeah, I live down the road from Slane, but Townley Hall House (old estate house sitting in the middle of the woods) that is seriously haunted, I live virtually next door and the tales from people who have spent the night in the house would freak you out, and student from trinity years ago when the house was left to some trust or the other stayed in it one night without ever hearing the stories and refused to every go back.

I haven't seen any dead people but I know a fella who lives a bit down the road, he's a water diviner as well, and he's seen so many things as have any of the people in that family. My dad told me a story once of a "ghost" (actually it was a living man who's house he'd left 10 minutes before) he'd seen when he was young (turns out the guy he thought he saw ... his twin brother had died that night).

As well there's a woman my dad knows and from when she was very little she used to tell her parents of things she'd see in the fire, people etc, and they never believed her until she described a granny she'd never seen or even seen photos of.

    Its a freaky world.

Yeah, its an urban myth. I think it one of Francis Ledwidges Nephews lives there or something. Story used to be that every time anyone painted the paint would come off overnight. Its painted now and has been for ages. The reason no one will buy it is cos its not for sale :) . Only reason it wasn't painted was because the owner was a bit slow to do so.

Don't know where the myth cam e from but it was discussed here before. I'm from near Slane too btw.

One explanation of ghosts is that they're an imprint on to time. Either they have gone through the same place (eg; walking up stairs) so many times, that there is an imprint left onto the "real world".
Then after the person dies, the residule energy is left in that one spot.
    =OR=
This "imprint" may only be seen while your in a certain place, as if your seeing through another person eyes, who may have seen her there, and your seeing their memory. This explains why the ghost is not always seen, as you must be in that one place, or you don't see it.

    =-=

Another explanation is that they were killed in or near that place, and wanted someone to find them, before going onto Stage 2. But as the person never came, and the dead person has no impression of time, they don't know how long they've been there for. This may be the case in ghosts that respond some way to your presence. Since they're in a different "phase" of existance, you can't always hear what they're saying.

    Slane house.
Where is it? Directions please. I'd actually be willing to spend a night there, so I can talk to who's "living" there, and see wots up. Proberly a carcess nearby or something; maybe in the river.

A lot of strange **** is seeing near some rivers at night, and if you investigate it, you may find out some weird stuff about it. Usually there was family trouble, and someone killed themselves.

Castletown house (Celbridge, Co Kildare) is a pretty weird place. The house has 3 or 4 floors, and a couple of bars. No-one stays there at night.
Nearby, at Castletown Gate, there's a gatekeepers house. There's one or two tales about the house, but I've found all to be untrue.
About 50 or so years ago, there used be a path from Castletown house to a monument called Connollys Folly or the Obelisk, where, if you ran around the top 13 times at midnight, you'd see the devil. Now the first floor is blocked off (saftety reasons; it was at least 2 stories up, with a little 1 foot high ledge around it at the sides), it used to guantee a great view. The wife of the person who built it, and the Wonderful Barn, now lies in rest in the right arch.
The Wonderful Barn, is now occupied, has 1 large tower, and two smaller ones and on the top of the main tower, there is a great view. It was proberly built as a watch tower for Castletown house, which used to have a wall surrounding it.
In Leixlip, there's a place called Leixlip Castle. All the above buildings, except Castletown house, were built by the Conolly family.
There is alot of folklore surrounding these places.

    A few linls;

Remember when I was about 12, myself and some friends used to play in a small woods near my house. I remember one day going to play walking over a spot of ground getting a chill and turning to my friends and saying "feels like I'm walking over someone's grave". Went back a few times and same feeling every time over that spot. A few days later, we found garda search teams combing the area looking for a body, and about 2 weeks later a man walking his dog uncovered a body in that spot.

A friend of mine was seeing this weird girl before and she used totally freak him out. Used to ask him if his mother had a miscarriage before he was born and then told him his dead brother used to be standing to the left of him at all times and used to come to her in the shower a few times. Then she left him messages from his father who was dead. Later we found out she had found out about the miscarriage thing from word of mouth and was playing with his head. Nutty bitch.

btw, think most of the banshees these days get arrested both on counts of creating noise disturbance and get convicted of murder on circumstancial evidence. Anyone remember the banshee in "Bad Girls"? ;)

a friend of mine's ex-attic, now his bedroom is haunted.

he used to tell me some stories, and i herdly believed him.

but, last summer, i stayed over in his house literally about twice a week, and stuff just got weirder and weirder.

Me: (at 4 am) grrlfs.. mghd... your dad is snoring and keeping me awake...
    Kris: (sleepily agrees) mm... yeeeaaahh...

    (thinks)

Kris: Rob, the house is EMPTY

followed by a night of listening to people who dont exist sone IN THE ROOM, crying in the walls (not to next door, but into another empty room), people mumbling in our pillows, people from nowhere talking, etc.

he takes this all in his stride, being used to it all.

    I, in contrast, never sleep.

One time, for a LARK, we did this seance.
We turned off the lights, lit a candle, set up the board, etc, and LEFT THE DOOR WIDE OPEN.

    so -
Kris: (laughing to himself at teh absurdity of this) eh, is anyone there?

WHAM - door slams shut - locks itself.
POOF - candle goes out, falls over, paper scatters.
FLICK - curtains fly up (has a skylight)

    footsteps on stairs.

Kris: hmmm. well, lets do something else. DO you watch Family guy?
    Me::eek: ww) :ninja:

so now im a believer (cue song)

    This is probably Urban Ledgend,

But apparently there an old woman's ghost in Bray Bowl . She just spends her time constantly sweeping the allies. Weird thing is some claim they've caught her on video tape, and one lad i met randomly had seen it, he said it freaked the be-fook out of him.

One of my friends father died of a heart attack, and my friend studys sculpture, He was working on a piece that was the top half of a male body (turso and head) And the night his father died of the heart attack, his piece was in the kilm (Instrument used to dry out and heat clay) The left hand side of the chest ie. - his heart, had exploded, but the rest stayed perfectly intact.

    Got loads of these stories.
    But im still a sceptic.

One of the strange happenings in my house....

A few years ago my mother was in bed reading and looked up to see an old woman coming towards her. The description of the woman was as follows: old, grey hair in a bun, green dress. My mother said she got a feeling of ill will and started praying out loud, she closed her eyes and prayed for this "thing" to go away and each time she opened them she was still there. Eventually the figure dissapeared and my mother ran out of the room.

My two sisters slept in bunkbeds downstairs and late one night my sister, (on the top bunk) woke up, because she heard the bedroom door opening, a woman walked in and she thought it was my mother and asked her what she was doing up so late. It was only then that she realised it wasn't my mother but a woman of the same description above, bun, grey hair, green dress. My sister buried her head in the pillow when she got this really bad feeling. After looking up a few times the woman eventually disappeared.

The thing is the two events were separated by two weeks and my mother never told anyone else except my dad after her experience, so my sister didn't know that my mam had seen the same apparition until she described to my mother what she had seen in her room.

There is a story about the Powerscourt Towncentre, that one of the Lady Wingfield's threw herself out of her bedroom window and commited suicide.
I have researched the Wingfield family history due to reports of strange happenings in the towncentre. There is one Lady Wingfield married to the 4th Viscount who is not mentioned to a great extend in the history books and died four years after she was married however the cause of her death is not listed, it was also a childless marriage and Richard Wingfield married a second wife after this. I have pinned this down as the possible suicide case as all the other Wingfield women lived relatively long and had children.
There are sightings of women frequently walking up and down the back staircases at night time by the security guards, things moving around etc. There is also a pulpit belonging to the church that once existed in the centre and it is handed from one shop to another as a reception desk, due to the bad luck associated with it.
I took an interest after being told about it by a member of staff of one of the shops. This shop was Lady Wingfields bedroom aparently and until recently was the only vacant, unlet area in the shopping centre. I know this may sound strange but there is a pervasive feeling in this area like someone is with you and trying to get your attention, its weird you'd have to be there, but almost everyone remarks on it.
I was standing in this shop waiting for my friend to lock up one evening after closing, I began to tell her the research I had done, and who I thought it was. We were standing in front of a big mirror, I was behind her and talking to her through the mirror. We had been chatting away. We both stopped talking at the same time and said to each other "did you see that"- together.
The figure of a woman had appearred and walked passed the mirror behind both of us. There was no one else in the centre at all except the security guard at the front door.

My Dad used to love to tell us ghost stories and scare the **** out of us at mad hours of the night - evil, evil man!! :)

He told us one of when his two uncles were young boys and their uncle was dying, they were sent to run for the priest to give him last rites, it was late at night and in order to get to the priests house they had to cross the bridge. As they ran towards it a extremely large black dog blocked their way growling ferociously. No matter how they tried they could not distract it to get past. At last in frustration one of them cried out 'in the name of God let us pass' and the dog vanished....

They ran on and got the priest who arrived in time to administer the last rites. Later when they recounted the story they came to believe that the dog was sent by the devil to stop the boys so he could claim the soul of the uncles.......

As a young child this used to terrify me...I think I should have been given counselling :D

yeah this is known as the hell-hound from celtic folklore. Its believed to be a representation of the devil, or a devil in another form, there's lots of websites on this sort of stuff and if your interested in forklore- they're pretty good. Fortean Times did a good article on Banshee's and such like a while back.

    see here for example.
The fearful black dog does not always exhibit supernatural powers; sometimes it will simply sit or lie across the road, blocking the passage of anyone who comes along. If attacked, it may use Mind Control spells like those of the wandering black dog to defend itself, but if the situation develops into a standoff the dog will vanish after a while (perhaps out of boredom). Places haunted by fearful black dogs tend to have some evil association -- roadside gibbets and places where witches were burnt, for instance. According to some sources, the dogs are the spirits of those wrongly executed, while others suggest that they are the familiars of burnt witches or the spirits of the executed bandits or witches themselves.

This is a big issue of mine that I am dealing with in various philosopho-scientific papers at the moment, essentially to do with the interpretation by the brain of electro-chemical "echos" left from places of emotional discharge, strong consistent presence of similar energy, and the perceived manifestation of the brains intepretation of these echoes as visual entities.

In short, yes to ghosts, but with the proviso of a pending explanation

Theres a house here in Galway, down by the claddagh, which had a poltergeist. It was on telly, radio and had a book written about it. I'm sure someone here has more details.....

Patch69 , where is that house , I can't remember hearing about that one but I recall a house in Westside was supposed to be haunted by a child . The story goes that a nun gave birth to a child and the child was killed or something along them lines (I think).

The "ghost" child began taking the toys of the couples child .

Also the house at Moneenagesha (Now a B & B ) near The Huntsman ( I'm sure some of ye know this "landmark") was supposed to be haunted.

Ive written this here before but its worth a retelling. A good friend of mine Keith used to live in the most ****ed up house ever. its was as ould as the hills and had some mad history. back in 1916 some IRA general and **** was killed their , seemingly there is a tunnel leading from the house all the way downtown. ive seen where the entrance has been concreted over too. the house is mentioned in a few historical books.
    - But they used to hear people walking down the stairs towards the bedroom
    - Keith was coming out of the bathroom one night when he saw someone small peeking from out around the kitchen door at him. he called out and they ran into the kitchen. when he investigated there was no one there

    - after his grandmother died, his mother laid a single rose on the fireplace. keiths older brother took exception to this and destroyed the rose infront of the whole family. Just as his done this a golden light shot from one end of the room to the other and passed through his ear. Clipping it as his grandmother used to do when he was bold.

    - His garage is converted into a workshop for doing upholstry and stuff and theres a compressor drivin nail gun. its gets plugged out. its the family business and his grandfather and father have done it for years. For nights after his grandfather died the compressor, though plugged out would be popping and shooting all night as if the old mans was working away.

this type of crap used to follow keith around all the time. the family had a mobile home in wicklow. and while out walking with his friend ritchey one night they passed by an old abandoned house thats rumoured to be haunted.
as they passed it ritchey stop and started shaking, claiming he could feel something trying to grab hi and passthrough him. keith tried to drag him and after a few minutes he could move again. they moved onwards quickly and they had to pass a home with a few dogs. the dogs were loose and would chase anyone who walked by so they had to be quiet. just as they passed Ritchey claimed he could feel something trying to take him again, he snapped out of it and the two started running as the dogs chased them. after a few meters ritchey turned around and let a crazy scream at the dogs who turned yelping and ran off back to the house. the two ran the rest of the way back home.

The "ghost" child began taking the toys of the couples child .

Also the house at Moneenagesha (Now a B & B ) near The Huntsman ( I'm sure some of ye know this "landmark") was supposed to be haunted.

That sounds like the same story, Maybe I got the location wrong, I thought I heard Gerry Ryan on about it in the last year or so. There IS a book about it though, thats prolly why it was back on the radio... I'll ask around.

That house in moneen really changed!! I remember it as it used to
be an old kip maybe 10 years ago....

    banshees? hmmm.

dunno about those but I do know that when I was about 14 I was up mooching around the house, in the wee small hours, and decided to go to the freezer in the utility room and get a snack.

So I'm there digging around looking for something edible when I hear something like the most bloodcurdling human death-scream through the open window, from a distance of what sounded like 3 meters away.

 . Sweet mary joseph god baby jesus.

I can still remember standing there absolutely frozen to the spot, every hair on end, mind a total blank, fully expecting to see some crazy banshee face with her nose against the window. Decided I'd better turn off the light so I could maybe see if there was anyone out the back garden. I stood there probably for about half an hour and heard the screams another couple of times.

Turned out to be a couple of cats tearing strips off each other.
