Its gotta be done, just sticking with the main ones from each series, and its gotta be Picard also. Know one else could do that make it so. I'm a fan of Sisko as well though pity about all that emissary stuff.

    1. Picard - Make it so!
    2. Kirk - sorry, but the guy is so cool. He's the funniest captain of them all by a country mile, and he doesn't pay attention to all that ethical/philosophical crap. He likes to shoot things.
    3. Sisko - if he didn't have all that Emissary rubbish as well as having a stupid habit of talking like paddy20 while shouting at the same time ("Damnit old man... 'why'... arent.... YOU... !!?here!!? I can't DOOOOO... this... ALONE") he'd of been pretty good.
    4. Janeway - her only redeeming feature is that she's better than that Enterprise nobend.
    5. Porthos, that's the dogs name right? He's a better character than Arser, he should be captain.

sisko was the best SF captian of all time i mean anyone that says this:

Sisko: One thing is certain: we're losing the peace. Which means a war could be our only hope.

he's a hard ass in my books and did any of the other SF captians ascend to a higher plain of existance i think not!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

it has to be picard and sisko i cant pick just one

picard is a great explore and fighter
siko is a hard ass battler who stands for what he bleaves and takes little ****

their very much alike and where both captians of a important starfleet ship/station

Kirk was a arse "i ........can..........do...........it...........spock" so annoying
    janway less said the better
    archer ........lol

Picard all the way he does the "engage" and "make it so bit" better and he has the flick of the wrist down to a T:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    Easily Picard.
Such a man, I'd follow him to my death and *back!

I'm shocked Sisko got more votes than Kirk though.
    Blasphemy!!!

Although, compared to Janeway, or Archer, Sisko does indeed rule.

    *back from death mandatory

    Picard definately.

Worst had to be Janeway. I think it was her voice... that damn voice...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Has to be Jean Luc, he was Borg, defeated them and well "engage" thats just class :) If u made Picard really thick he'd layeth the smacketh down on any of the other captains hehe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭spooky donkey

well i prefer archer to bloody janeway. her vioce just got to me!

Picard simply ruled. Best captain ever. Kirk was too violent and stupid for my liking with his constantly getting into fights. Picard always immediately tried for the peaceful route which, was a hell of a lot more wise than Kirk's approach.

    Sisko for meh....

    One tough bastard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

Picard, lets face it he's the only decent actor in the series, all of them :)

Sisko "i must show emotion but i can't form words aaaahhh"

    Janeway - panzy

    Kirk - dipla-what-now

Archer - i'm gonna smile n hope ppl don't aske me stuff

he just doesn't suit the role of captain... he's just wrong in general! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

I can't help picturing Archer in a dress (and no not because that's my ideal fantasty, which we wont be discussing here anyway)

Its due to the whole Sam Beckett role in Quantum Leap. He's too soft he doesnt have a captains voice and he doesn't lead properly. He pussyfoots around too much I like a man who takes action so I'd vote for Picard or Sisko

Picard being ahead due to his fantastic portrayal by Patrick Stewart. I dont think anyone else could have pulled off that role in the same way.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Picard for sure. Make it so.
Oh and Amz your probably picturing Archer in a dress because any episode of Quantum Leap I saw had Sam in a woman's body which meant he had to prance around the place in a disturbingly tight dress.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

Picard, with sisko close behind. Both are memorable, both are strong characters and actors.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

i liked when Data was becoming human, it was cool cos he'd question some of his emotions and Captain Picard was always show him the way, great liked them episodes :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭Washout

    Sisco for me as well.

Picard seemed more vulcan alot of the time

Sisco put his heart into captaincy...way more gut instinct than Picard.

I voted Janeway, i know alot of people disliked her but I genuinely think she was the best, maybe coz i just perfered Voyager to the other shows.

Although i will say this, the last episode was stupid.

Here is my 5 in order

    Janeway
    Picard
    Sisko
    Archer
    Kirk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Deffo J-L Picard, good actor, which helps. I hated Sisko, but he improved alot when he shaved his hair and grew that goatie. Most aggressive captain by far. Janeway's voice is just too like a screaching modem. She has breasts though. Kirk was Kirk, he didn't give a monkeys. As for Archer...he should fúck off back to Quantum Leap where he belongs. He's the only captain ever to spend a whole episode chasing a fúckin space-bat around a ship with a fishing net. Christ. Shoot me now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭public_enemy

picard without a doubt, followed by kirk

i don't know how sisko is second in the poll, the guy spent half the time sitting alone in his ready room playing with a baseball! and he didn't even have a starship! what kind of captain is posted to a crappy ex-cardassian space station?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Whats even scarier than that is someone voted for Archer! I hope they were extracting the urine...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,856 ✭✭✭Clover

Sisko was #1 for me ,i loved ds9. with picard a close #2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Although I perferred TOS to NG, Picard is my fav captain. Kirk wasn't held back by the Prime Directive and could do whatever the hell he liked - which was fun, but I perferred Picards balance duty/law and doing things his own way.

1: Picard - He was Borg, had that episode where Q gives him a second chance at life and

2: Kirk - Watching TOS is a breath of fresh air these days. Kirk never held back from a fight and always got with the green skinned ladies.

3: Sisko - Emissarie thing let him down, other than he was a moodier Picard.

4: Archer - I give the man respect for his previous work in Quantum Leap, that's all

5: Janeway - Star Trek tried to be p.c. by having a female captain. Pity they couldn't have come up with a competent one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I think it's unfair to hate Janeway that much. Hated her with a vengeance myself in the first 2 series, but after that she started to grow on me. Same with Sisko, hated him in the early DS9 episodes before he went shaved head and goatee route. Picard was the best in my opinion always thinking about strategy. Hated Kirk from start to finish, reminds me so much of George Bush. Does he have to rip his shirt every time he fights as well? Archer can go back to Quantum Leap.

I think this is my top 5 ????? I am unsure really

    1. Sisko - He's just the man. Full stop. If he shouts at you, you listen. He's not got his head stuck in the clouds though. He's a sound bloke it looks like.

    2. Picard - He's got the skills. Good pilot that guy. And his authority is only surpassed by his baldness. He's also pretty down to earth too.

    3. Kirk-Kirk always boxed heads. Even in 'Generations'. The whole possible gay thing between him and spock always freaked me out though.

    4. Archer - To be honest I haven't seen many episodes of Enterprise as I've been too busy working [****ing sh** , isn't it?] but from what I did see he was okay.

    5. Janeway - she has her head in the clouds now. I think so anyway. She seems to just follow Tuvok and Harry. And then once a month or so Chakotay presses a button, if he's not busy on some vision quest. Voyager is by far the worst of all the Trek programmes.

    Gotta be Jean-Luc ;)

Grew up on TNG and he just rocks! :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

god this one was dug out of the archives :) i think we have an overwhelming victory though. However there is some suprising results. I hope for sisko in second place though i'm surprised at how well janeway did and how poor kirk did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Janeway is judged way too harshly. She was a newbie captain assigned to a "supposedly easy mission on a small little ship" who was forced to learn the ropes very quickly during her time in the Delta quadrant. For the first 2 seasons her incompetence really showed as she made questionable negotiations with alien species and patronized the crew.

Over the course of the show though her character developed into the competent captain we saw in the later series (before season 7 when she became totally overbearing). Development is what I like to see in a character, not a ready-made "perfect character".

Oh and Kirk was a frikking slease.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭davil

Ah but when you think about it the intrepid class ships were technologically advanced and had quantum torpedoes, neural gel packs etc. . Sticking any old captain on that ship wouldn't do any good. Plus she gambled with the crew's lives way too much. She's a village idiot if you ask me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

It didn't have quantum torpedoes, just phasers and photons. It also had a crew of just 150 and was meant for short easy missions.

Kirk is the man - Summed up in three words:

    "Flying Drop Kick".

Sisko was the man, had a life outside of his job

all the rest were a little bit sad, living for their jobs, Picards best friend was Data!, and all of Kirks relationships seemed to self destruct, don't care about the other two, they're boring

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭lodgepole

    "I don't like to lose"
    *bites into his apple*

    Kirk by a mile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

Data wasnt Picards best freind.....Riker was picards best freind

Data had Geordi as a best freind and picard as a mentor in human ways

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Sisko - you do NOT fcuk with Sisko. I may have not liked him first season but since this is a favourite captain poll, it doesn't matter as he wasn't a captain for Season One :) But Picard's my second fave.

But the real question is - who the HELL voted for Archer?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭Cactus Col

Data was definetly Picards best friend, his closest companion on the ship .... not saying Riker wasn't a friend.

Data had ten times more personality than Riker. All Riker could do was play poker and tell bad jokes. Riker used to just suck up to Picard like a good subserviant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

No no no. Picard's best friend on the ship was Guinen (sp?), by a mile. And now that I think of it, Data probably was a closer friend of Picard than Riker was.

Eh he could play the saxaphone! Sheesh how could you forget an important character building point like that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

i must agree somewhat with both points of view, geordi and data where by far best friends especially in the early days of TNG, whilest at this time i would have thought that picard and riker just had a good working relationship. also in this time picard was more of a mentor to data then anything else, however over the course of time picard and datas friendship evolved until you have it to the state of play it was at in first contact and then in nemesis. saying that i still think that riker was a good friend of picard all through the time also

however how come no ones considering Dr. Crusher?

Crusher! are you f-ing mad ....she was captian for 2 hours of screen time (and a crap one at that) managed to get the ship destroyed and nearly start a war with the powerful klingon empirer + she was "captian" of a hosptial ship for god sake thats not even a real captian lol :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭fozzle

Picard, without a doubt, simply the best captain ever. Kirk's my second favorite, I just can't help but have a soft spot for the auld lad, having been brought up watching TOS.
