Shíto-Ryu Itosu Kai Karate, 1st Dan. 1st Dan in Kobudo too. :ninja:

Only common around co. Galway in Ireland, but there's a really big following in Canada, and its HQ is in Japan. Very similar to Shotokan. Can't remember which did which, but the master of one trained under the master of the other.

Haven't been able to go to a class in a year and a half or so recently, college and all that. Sniff:(

Judo - Yellow belt. Bit pissed that I've finished until next term though, doing it in College and all that. Been looking into BJJ in Phibsboro and that Krav Maga course in town. Should keep me frosty.

Quite a lot of people commute from all over Ireland to train at Bujinkan classes in Dublin- from Northern Ireland, Donegal and Galway as well.

The question of whether or not the Bujinkan teaches 'ninjutsu' is debatable. I have been training for quite a few years, and the things I have studied which are very obviously from a ninjutsu ryu ha comprises only a small part of what I have been doing.

What is taught could more accurately be described as a synthesis of koryu (pre-meiji restoration) martial arts schools: some of them ninjutsu schools, some jujututsu schools, and some 'sogo' or complete budos which run the gamut of everything from religion, to empty hands, to obscure battlefield weapons and swordsmanship. This synthesis is referred to as Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu.

    Some links:-

    Thanks a lot

Great when the lingo throws others off ^_^

Tis an interesting art indeed, must try and get educated about the terminology - I've shotokan as a concrete base but now it is time to move on.

I'm guessing this is Kaze Arashi ryu...

Does anyone have contact details for these guys or know where and when they train?

btw Jiu-jitsu / jujutsu is a kind of blanket term, it does not refer to a single specific martial art, although it seems that in Ireland there are plenty of teachers who either don't know this or deliberately don't bother to get into it. The unnarmed syllabus of Kaze Arashi ryu and other schools are not just like jujutsu, they are examples of jujutsu.

Balck Tag - ITF Tae Kwon Do

haven't trained for some years. Broke my arm about 1 month before I was to do my black belt. Have been reluctant to get back into it, but still train alot. Took up rock climbing and swimming shortly after my physio. Swim about 8Km a week over four sessions. Wouldn't mind getting back into the Martial Arts again, did try a little Tai Chi for awhile out in UCD, was quite impressed. Closed soft style as as apposed to what I was use to of Open hard style training, kata and fighting.

3rd degree black belt in mu gen do kickboxing

did belt before red in WTF TKD year s ago, blue I think???

Been doing Krav Maga recently andit rocks, no belts, no GIs, you train in your street clothes which is cool!

Belts are great for keeping track of your progress, and a brilliant achievement especially getting black belt. but with great respect to all, we all know that there are people walking the streets , real violent bastards, who would take alot of us black belts apart in the street regardless what style we practise if we be brutually honest about it. when your under stress in a violent situation and adreline is flying, is is very very hard to remember the techniques never mind trying to get them working!

****o-ryu Itosukai is no more similar to shotokan than any other style of karate and is disimilar to a greater extent.
****o ryu is closer to the original Okinawan kata, and incorporates kobudo into the grading syllabus , stylised bunkai are also taught as part of the syllabus, and the hard kime found in many shotokan practitoners is not so prevalent ,****o stylists are usually very fluid .

the master of one did not train under the other but Ankoh Itosu was the teacher of both the masters Kenwa Mabuni(****o ryu) and Gichin Funakoshi(shotokan ryu) , there was some intertraining between the students and both masters were reportedly good friend but they were contemporaries/colleagues.

Also Kenwa Mabuni historically was the founder of ****o ryu karate not ****o-ryu Itosukai ,when he died his students all claimed succesion from him this lead to the
founding of many ryu-ha(schools) Ryushu Sakagami founded the Itosu-kai ryu.
There are perhaps 10-11 of these 'splinter' ryuha.

Good style and generally nice people

    :D
