I'm trying to decide on a second choice if I dont get History and politics and I was wondering what everybody did/does in college and if they have any suggestions?

Im thinking of BESS for my second choice, anyone done it?

I'm currently in second year of a BSc degree in computer networking at Carlow IT. I'm finding the course very difficult - especially the maths, which I think i may fail this year, but the college is decent enough. Modern facilities, most of the lecturers are good, and the canteen serves rotten slop at inflated prices. Mm mm mm.

    What the fup is BESS?

I know three people doing BESS they seem to enjoy it...
I had BESS down as it seems like a really interesting course so I reckon go for it or something similar if possible!

don't seem to have as much work as me though which is crappy!!

I'm studying (studying being a totally inaccurate word) a BSc in Sports Science and Health in DCU.

I hated it at first even considered changing, but now I love it and am hoping this whole time wasting on the computers will in fact benefit me somehow in my exams in two weeks!!

    Business, Economics and Social Studies.

It's what the stupid pretty girls do in Trinity.

BESS girl to me during freshers week last october: "When a guy likes me, i would like him to buy me champagne".
Me: "LOL? OMG ROFFLE TBH IMO GG PLD IAF BRB GTG."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,658 ✭✭✭✭The Sweeper

Mate of mine did BESS in Trinity. Got a high 2:1 out of it, got a job with Merrill Lynch, moved to London to work for Merrill Lynch, at the time I was on a healthy wage working in PR and she wiped the floor with my salary to be honest, not even counting the Christmas bonus she used to pay for her wedding...

Then again, she didn't last in it - gobsh1te intolerence was tested sorely and she quit about a year and a half after she started. Sorted her bloody finances out in the meantime though I tell you...

    Anyway - I did Journalism - don't go there.

The reason BESS looks interesting is because I could do economics and politics, which would be really cool.
The problem is that theres only 3 politics courses in trinity, ones with history [550 points :(] ones with philosophy, and one in BESS.
I figure the philosophy one would be kinda useless.

I figure if I cant get it with history I figure economics is the next best bet in the job searching prospects.
Also I figure if I dont like economics I can always do business and social studies or a bit of law in first year.

As far as I remember the best course for politics is not in Trinity. Can't remember if it's UL or UCG or what. There are only two credible courses anyway AFAIK.

"The problem is that theres only 3 politics courses in trinity"

    then go somewhere else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I would except I was warned by a couple of people that the politics department isn't that good in UCD.
Also Trinity has a very very good name for politics and also its well well recognised in the US meaning I can go work there with a recognised college.

p.s. I really couldnt go outside Dublin for college

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

UCG have a far better politics course as far as I'm aware! Don't go to a college based solely on where it's recognised!!!

Do the best course for you!!!

The amount of people I know who went to trinity or where ever because of the name and who are now deeply unhappy or have dropped out is staggering.

Consider seriously your motives for wanting to go to tinners before you make any final decision!

Don't do journalism if you want to get rich, its FUNNY that some people don't know this :D. Only few get rich in any way from it.

Like any other course you should really find out what job(s) you can do after and what work you will be doing in the said job.

Why not? If its for personal reasons then don't answer. if its because all your mates are in Dublin or something like that then feck it. You most likely won't hang around with the same mates next year anyway.

he's prolly not going outside dublin for college coz that means he'll havta move out, and he might not be able to afford that.

Structural Engineering, not for the faint hearted :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Yeah it would mean I'd have to move out and I just couldnt afford it.

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

How many 18 year olds actually CAN afford to do that? It surprised me to hear Fio[smiles] was moving to Galway for college.
    Oh how perplexed I was...

Thats a reasonable reason. A lot of ppl don't go outside Dublin because the culture shock might kill them.

Did Maths & Computing at Oxford university.

It's quite a good course, and I'd probably recommend it to anyone considering it, but the computing aspect is very theoretical (i.e. you prove your program is correct before you run it etc.) and there are no exams in the second year which can lead to bouts of laziness - punting out on the river seems somewhat better than holing oneself away from the sunlight to study for hypothetical exams more than a year away...

Engineering at the College of the Holy Most High and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth (near Dublin) - hmm that's a mouthful - how about plain old Trinity.

Not a bad course but not terribly practical.

Doing a BSc in U.C.D (hey that rhymes) chemistry and experimental physics, finishing off third year now, one left, and exams start next week so i probably shouldn't be typing this.
The course is o.k i'd recommend u.c.d for science, trinity's courses aren't meant to be that good.

With regards to moving out of dublin, i couldn't have afforded to do it either, specifically meaning my parents would not have been able to afford a diggs for me at roughly €70 a week for 24 weeks of the year.

    I got drunk alot!

If you know the general area you want to go into, I don't think the specific course is as big a deal as people think.

In college... Well i dropped of school at 19, I was 4 years late (from the normal school evolution..etc..), I moved in ireland...
5 years later, I'm on 30.000/year, paid to sit at my desk, and try to support the pc problem that some people can have...
    Looks nice huh?
Well... I can't move out from tech support...(I'll be stuck here for the rest of my life... making it shorter by smoking a lot though...).

so I would say go for the lazzy option, sleeping in school... pay is pretty kewl really in that field... although, if you ain't graduating first of the class, you'll be a bum.. like the friends who did the same than me.. (except that they stayed in france)...

Does that mean that technically a french bum can earn 30.000 in ireland? :-D

    Never realised I was a BUM :-D

    To be honest.

The ability to do your job (experience or a proven talent) is what matters to employers.

Example : One of the owners of my company doesn't have a Leaving Cert, yet he has written COBOL systems for the Bank of Ireland and SQL relational databases for the likes of FFF and BOSI.

I myself have what you might call a 'jaded'* educational past, but, I have honestly found that employers prefare a proven ability to do your job then a string of letters after your name.

Recruitment agents are a different story, recruitment agents will vet you for jobs that said agent hasn't a breeze about.
Example : A recruitment ad on a reputable site advertised.
"Kernal developer required. Must be familiar with Object Orientation".

    On Topic :
When I was 14 I did the CTYI thang in DCU.

I studied Psychology and then Creative Writing.

    *Don't ask.

    On Topic :
When I was 14 I did the CTYI thang in DCU.

On topic: I did a very simple program in basic 1.0 to do a Division until it actually stopped...
What better to test than trying to calculate PI? :-D
After 9 weeks we decided that could put that poor To7 to better use... :-) (I was 8)... but hey basic 1.0 is nothing ... an 8 year old could have done it... (really anybody).
I have no talent... I'm just badluck... I get all the problems in a pc before you can have them... by finding the solution to my own problem, I can then support the users on the same problem...
now people.. get the lessons.. how to turn your badluck in a money making business? :-D
