EA Sports F1-2002. Not just for the F1 side, theres tons of very professional mods available for it (see the Simmods site). Its worth buying it for the mods alone as I did, but if yer into F1 then its doubly worth it.

Ohhhh, this may start the GP4 vs EA's F1 2002 debate again.

In my opinion, I think EA's offering just shades it, I have both, but like I say I think EA wins graphics wise. You may be able to get a demo of each of them.

    They are;
    Geoff Crammonds Grand Prix 4
    EA sports F1 2002

EDIT: There is also another Grand Prix sim called Grand Prix Legends, which is faaan-tastic, but it don't use the cars of today, and it is VERY hard, well for me anyway

the physics model in GP4 is a joke compared to F1 2002.

GPL is a great sim, better than either for online id say ATM, but the mods for F1 2002 are pure class.

Pick up GPL for bout 7e and then maybe get F1 2002, assumin you want a challenge that is.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

GP4 is fun with nice gfx,AI are superb .If your after a great F1 game as opposed to F1 sim GP4 is your man.
F1 2002 is a better sim but tbh i only play GTR2002 mod for it and BMW M3 mod occasionally.
GPL in terms of F1 is in a league of its own.

Thanks for the info. Grand Prix Legends sounds excellent. I'll probably go for F1 2002 aswell! :D

Just wondering, has anybody played EA SPorts F12002 on the Gameboy Advance? Compared to other Gameboy Advance racing games, how does it rate? Screenshots look good but I've read poor reviews

Just wondering - do y'all use a force feedback wheel for racing? I have one but I don't have in the way of room to use it at the momment. :( Any suggestions on alternatives?

I downloaded the F1 2002 "work in progress" demo last night. Seems pretty cool.

    Boog.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Im unsure of alternatives as you really need a good wheel or you loose out on so much.Real sims are designed around wheel/pedal setups especially force feedback ones.Ive got the Momo Force wheel and its the best ive ever had,it tells you exactly what your car is up to,quite incredible actually.
GTR 2002 comes with a set configuration for various wheels configured by its creators[real race drivers].
Im using the one for my wheel and im feeling everything,oversteer,understeer,rumble-strips,grass,crashes and braking and accelaration forces[the harder i need to brake the more i feel it in the wheel].
You could try a pad of course but its not the same.

Is there any other way to get these downloads? I'm on 56k dialup and downloading them myself isn't an option : (

My wheel is a Microsoft Sidewinder 2 (I think! force feed back anyway). As I got this a few years back - how does it compare to today's standards?

Its fine, its what i use

i've kinda my head stuck my bum in terms of racing sims for a while. First of all... is it really true that Geoff's GP4 is arcadey compared to F1 2002??? An EA game??? I always thought Geoff's games were the most serious.

Also, i just wanna get this straight... is GTR2002 a mod for F1 2002?

Finally, i have an MS FF wheel, but i prefer to use my MS Sidewinder FF2 stick, even for driving, cos it's too much hassle to set up the wheel and pedals, whereas i can just whip the joystick out and play at a moments notice

GC's games when they 1st came out were good, but then papyrus put out GPL!!!

GP4 is not worth getting, crap physics and a lot of compatability problems it seems.

go to: www.racesimcentral.com and have a look at the forums and see the about of bitching goin on about GP4

Stop reading this post and buy f12002 and GPL NOW!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭boogie man

Yep thats the one! it looks so sweet :D

I recently downloaded the GPL demo and it wouldn't work. I'm presuming this is because of my windows XP. Is there any patches or anything for the full version so it will work on my pc? Surley people can play it using XP

    Thanks,
    Boog.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

later patches for gpl fixed compatability problems and added d3d/opengl support + FF.

gp3 is also good for a quick spin and its better than gp4 by a long shot but nothing comes close to gpl and f1 2002

That's good news! I'll go get GPL aswell then. ;)

I'm just after looking around town (game - grafton st & Dawson St and HMV) and they don't have F1 2002 or GPL. Talk about out of luck!
So I have orderded it from Play.com. They don't have GPL in stock though. So does any one know where I can get my mitts on it?

    Thanks,

    Boog.

I've seen it in the bargain/budget sections in Smyths loads of times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭boogie man

Oh why, oh why, oh why do I never think of going to Smyths?
Cool, I'll try getting it tomorrow. Thanks.

    Boog.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

Easons also has it, saw it in there (Blanch center) today. I'd say the ones in town have the same stock too. Budget version same as Smyths.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

you will need at least 2 patches for GPL to run nice.

one is a cpu fix, the other is a patch to run it with openGL or DX, coz software looks pretty duff.

Go to www.racesimcentral.com and go to the GPL links page. It has all you need, VROC (for online racing), patches, graphic updates for cars and tracks, new sounds and somthing like 250 tracks!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭boogie man

I got my hands on F1 2002 at last! It is great fun and quite difficult to get to grips with too! It's soooo much better with the old force feedback wheel and pedals - really lets you control the car.
I had a look at the mods for it and was amazed at the size of them. I don't think my poor old 56k modem can handle them. Is there anywhere I could get these on CD? I really want to try the old turbo cars.:D

Still can't find GPL - smyths near jervis centre didn't have it, I'll have to try easons next. :)

    Thanks,
    Boog.

<edit> Hi, my name is DeadBankClerk, I'm so bored I read all posts on boards.ie and even when I've nothing remotely interesting or amusing to post, I post anyway. One day I'll have the most posts and all the other users will look up to me and call me "Master of Boards". I'll probably ejaculate alot.

did you use the GPL directory i gave you boogieman?

oh, and try oto get five for speed, its savage and always a good race to be had online :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭boogie man

Yep, I used that directory- worked a treat :)
I'm going nowhere near online until I can successfully get some consistant laps in - ie. stop crashing  :o

A good starting point is to get a nice stable set of setups (like Alison Hines) and get to know a few tracks in the Cooper (called a coventry ingame). Monza is pretty simple to get to know, as is Watkins Glen. No point starting with a twitchy setup in the Lotus at the Nurburg Ring :)

recently got f1 2002, its gonna take a while to get used to
for anyone else that played f1 for the playstation, you also know what a crap game that was, f1 2002 is sooo much better

just wish i had Dcully's very expensive steering wheel, the analogue stick is a little difficult to use

definately looks like a promising game, has more features than i expected, multiplayer, driving school and mods, just have to find enough time to give the championship a go

if anyone wants to rid themselves of a momo steering wheel gimme a shout

You're talking about 2002 on the PC right ?, 'cos there is no point talking about "simulations" on those silly little little PS things.

    lol.
consoles are pure muck for racing sims. All console racers as indeed any console game are dunbed down so much its painfull.
I makes me laugh when people call GT3 a racing sim.
My brother loves his PS2 ,sold his xbox but after playing some real racers on my PC he will not touch a racer on console and who would blame him.
I must confess to my love of pro evo soccer 2 on the PS2 :)

I had the thrustmaster Ferrari FF wheel before and got the MOMO for 70 euros in PC world ,they were selling last few off quickly to make way for other products [well thats what they told me when i quizzed them bout low price]
It was a real steal for that IMO.

I was Christmas eve ,would you believe.
Someone posted here about them so i drove from Kildare to Liffey Valley and picked up the 2nd last one.
A month before that i saw the same wheel in PC world for 270 euros.
As Dr Dre says this one is superb btw complete with the GPL[Grand Prix Legends] shifter and clutch.
I had the pleasure of trying this at Goodwood last summer, incredible setup.
