Programs give installation errors

After an upgrade from ME to XP pro, a friend is experiencing problems with some programs. For example Nortan Systemworks. It includes Nortan Utilities on the cd. I've tried to install Nortan Utlities along with System works but he gives an error code of -12. Any ideas?
