    Hey,

Was just wondering what people thought were the best rpg's. I'm currently playing Chronotrigger and i think its one of the best rpg's i've ever played. So any other ones worth looking at?

    Chrono Trigger is my fave,

I also enjoyed Mario RPG as well

    Both snes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Rnger

    Final Fantasy 6
    Terranigma
    Secret of Mana
    Chrono trigger

Also Secret of Evermore but no seems to like it. I loved it.

    All snes.

If u have KaZaA just search for snes roms in software and you can get a package of 20 snes roms. Most of the ones stu mentioned are in it.

And yes, Chrono trigger is probably the best you'll find imho :)

    Mega Drive
Landstalker: Isometric platforming/puzzle RPG. Brilliant dialogue.
Phantasy Star 4: Graphically stunning. Lots of challenge. Great all round package.

    SNES
Shadowrun: Before Deus Ex there was Shadowrun.

I agree chrono trigger is still excellent. I've got a soft spot for Zelda Links Awakining on the Gameboy also

    Shining Force 3.
now thats something i would like to get my hands on. but i would need a US saturn and an awful lot of money.

wasnt there a panzer dragoon rpg on the saturn to?

Panzer Dragoon Saga. You're talking pretty big money if you want to buy it off ebay or from UK traders. I'm told it's worth paying for though. Very unique and very good.

PD Saga got a Euro release. I'm pretty sure Shining Force 3: Ep1 did too. Ep 2 and 3 never got out of Japan though.

believe it or not, ive got Shining force 3 part one on the saturn, and nope you dont need a US one. Its one fo the best games ever! Still play it today.

About Panzer Dragoon Saga. I remember they gave the whole of CD1 away with saturn power, i got CD1 and man was it awesome, the graphics were stunning!

Chrono trigger is probably the best one but try:

    Secret of Mana
    Terranigma
    Secret of Evermore
    Terranigma
    Zelda
    Terranigma
    Secret of Mana 2
    Terranigma
    Breath of fire 2
    Terranigma
    Mario RPG.

I must put emphasis on Terranigma. Probably the best (next to Chrono Trigger anyway.)

the best rpg ever has got to be FF7

AAhh hell yea Shining force 1 and 2 ruined my life!!
the best RPG for its day without doubt in my opinion for a console. But then again i was a big megadrive Fan and i didn't ever play any SNES games so im sure that there is an equlivant RPG game thats just as good on the SNES, N64 etc

I wasnt aware there was a shining force 3 do you know if its still avaiable anywhere?

Shadowrun is nice, a bit clunky sometimes.. :)

All of square(soft)'s stuff that I've played on the snes/psx has been really nice, Secret of Mana was great in that it wasn't turn based like the ff series and chrono trigger...
Though charging up the weapons above level 2 (the whip to level 7 was really nice) got annoying since it took 15 seconds or so :)
Then again, the GF sequences in FF8 got a bit frustrating too when you just wanted to get back into the fight.

Ultima 7, 7 part II and 8 on the pc were nice, though obviously not emulated (except that you need software that patches all of the voodoo memory driver calls with its own flat memory code to run them in windows)...

That other weird one on the psx.... Syndicate? That was very nice, in a kinda hands-on way. Quite like shadowrun in feel actually :)

Syndicate and its sequel Syndicate Wars are available on the PC...

Yeah... the Ultima series always have a place in my heart.

Ah yes syndicate:) which had it's own thread a while back. Not an RPG really in the strictist sense but still a classic.(Amiga Version was superior to the PC version) Syndicate Wars was amazing given you could total entire buildings.:)

Shining Force 1 and 2 are the ****.
Shining CD was good too but I really miss having the towns wo wander around.
Shining the Holy Ark is one of the coolest RPG's I have, was quite different to the usual stuff I played with it's 1st person perspective.
Chrono Trigger was good but it kinda got dull for me after a while.

The 2 best RPG's ever IMO are Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shenmue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,529 ✭✭✭zynaps

Not a whole lot of first person RPGs... Ultima Underworld 1 and 2, and system shock I guess by Origin... good lads the, eh? :P

Played UW through near to the end, then realised I'd eaten some caterpillar stew or something which turned out to be not only one of a kind, but necessary for the completion of the game, so that was a bit pissy... :P
Game had a nice, sometimes scary atmosphere when it wasn't being boring, though ;)

Shadowcaster was kinda fun too, but much too linear to really be considered an RPG.

Wow, didn't even think to check if he was writing more games... nice! Also his developer blog is there which is pretty interesting. :)

Criminal that the sublime Skies of Arcadia has not been mentioned yet.

Truly brilliant game. I recommend the Gamecube version for the added content and lower (but still quite high) encounter rate.
