Boys, studying, chocolate, alcohol, un-necessary shopping sprees, swearing, obsessing over Jeff Buckley

I've only managed to stick with resisting one of them. Wonder which? :D

i don't think anyone from our peer group gives up anything in this 'day and age'. Or at least very few.

i gave up alcohol though..it's goin ok so far... although that depends on your definition of ok

    i miss beer :(

No I gave up men ages ago. I'll probably try give up tea for the whole of lent. How long is lent? I never ever paid attention in religion.

Tea - don't even think about it sista!!

I refuse to believe that Jesus went for forty days and forty nights without a cup of wonderful, good-for what-ails-ya tea.

Not a chance. All the other stuff in the bible I take as true. Well, apart from the parting of the seas thing. Ah sure it's probably true but it just requires a little stretch of the imagination.

You know that if you count up the days from the beginning to the end of lent, it's more than 40 days, it's closer to 50. So, when me and my siblings were wee, our ritual was that we could eat our sweets on Sundays and St. Patrick's Day. All legit, well it was to me.

Even though I'm not actually of the religion that gives things up for lent, I decided to quit smoking.

Which I did, for the three minutes it took me to wrestle the lid off the Baileys bottle.

But I remember when other people in my class were giving things up or whatever, I always thought that instead of giving stuff up for personal gain, how about doing stuff instead?

I used to try to be nicer to people (stop laughing, I did, really, honest...no, seriously...) but a brief and horrific career dealing with the public put paid to that.

Customer: 'I need to withdraw money from my account'

    Catriona: 'Oh f*** off.'

Unfortunately, though the gick uniform and disgraceful pay is long behind me, the attitude has remained.

i didn't give up anything cuz i'm not christian. Well i guess u could say that i gave up food for the last 19 days during the hours of daylight for a fast

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 136 ✭✭rapture_queen

Im giving up, giving up things-instead i gave blood and will do a fast.

The truth is i cant survive without chocolate esp around exam time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 153 ✭✭startled_frog

I've decided to give up eating after 8pm. I heard its bad for you.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

But none of these things are giving things up for 'Lent'!!

All these I'm giving up chocolate because I want to lose weight and eating after 8pm because its bad for me and smoking because it makes me the son of the devil or whatever....none of these are making a sacrifice like Jesus did really, and wasn't that the point of Lent? Thats just doing stuff for personal gain!!

    (Ahhh, google, you're only great.)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 413 ✭✭karma kabbage

    well actually....beg to differ

giving up alcohol FOR LENT right here look at me look at me look at me look at me.....etc

well there is an element of personal gain but there's is also sacrifice that comes with it...no pain no gain.
sure eating no ****e will do wonders for me but its also KILLING me slowly but surely. if i could JUST HAVE A ****ING BAG OF CRISPS.....but thankfully the sweats have passed now and i'll make it till the next craving comes along.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

Ahaha I get that all the time anyway...'Eeeeuuurrrgghh its been 15 minutes since that toffee crisp...surely I can have a Yorkie now...WHY IS THIS VENDING MACHINE SO SLOW??? PUSH little spring PUSH aaaaaaarrrghhh'

My point was though isn't Lent not about personal gain, but instead having an affinity with Jesus's suffering in the desert? (mmmm dessert)

I'm sure he didn't do it for a smaller bum and cleaner lungs and a healthy liver or whatever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,287 ✭✭✭thedrowner

yeah and...? do you think im not suffereing from not eating chocolate :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 413 ✭✭karma kabbage

but is isn't just self improvement that motivates me. it is a religious thing too and i refuse to believe i'm the only one.
