Shin Splints?

When I'm walking very quickly ie not strolling, I get like a sort of burning pain at the front or slightly to one side of my shinbone, as well as a tightening of my calf muscle.

The weird thing is that I don't get these pains when I walk slowly or normally, or when I run/jog or play basketball, they only come when I'm putting lots of effort into walking quickly.

Is this shin splints? And what can I do do relieve the pain (apart from walking slower)?

It happens when I'm wearing shoes or runners...

i used to get this when laying hockey. used to cause me awful apain and id be unable to walk for a number of days after. i still played on and i couldnt find anything that could be done. had check ups, had x-rays, ahd consultants prod me, until a friend finally came to the rescue.
    his advice...
wear an extra pair of socks.
    seriously!
the pain apparently comes when your foot is slipping about in your shoe. this puts extra strain in the muscles that run up your shins as you try to keep your balance and compensate. so if your foot is more snug and secure in the shoe, you wont have that pressure, and the pain will go.
and you know what, it did.
and now i cantrot around a pitch and not feel pain :)

now, if i could sort out my knees and got some skills, id probably be really good at hockey!

I get this as well if i'm walking quickly, but only on roads etc, don't usually get it when i'm in the gym. Swimming has helped for me I think, either that or it's some sort of fitness issue that causes the pains on your shin because i'm a lot fitter now than I was when I had shin splints.

I think I read somewhere about your gait and footwear aggravating it as well, as WWM said.

nice one, was out an about at lunch and noticed that my feet are not that snug in my shoes,
will get thicker socks and hopefully that'll help

only problem then is sweaty smelly feet

sweaty feet isnt a problem playing hockey :)
i use 3 pairs of socks!

however, for everyday wear, i would suggest getting some insoles for your shoes, and just wear thicker socks.
should sort your problem out :)
