    Hmm...not so sure about this.
Some class scenes and freaky stuff, but the story was too patchy and some of the acting was dodgy to say the least.

It was enjoyable and I liked the makeup and editing.
I liked the way you thought it was over when she finds the body, but theres all crazy shit about to happen

Yea and what was the story with the sound mics?....

you should rent the original ;)

    Piss poor version, tbh.
    The original was far superior.

    I hated that
The kid's role was overblown to a 'Sixth Sense' level. Pointless attempt to familiarize the film with something else just for American audiences. Made me cringe.

    Another thing was
the part where they're going down into the well. In the Jap original, this was a very long and suspensefull sequence, but in this one!? She got knocked into the well by a TV! Jesus, wtf were the writers smoking when they came up with that one!? Pure thick.

Although, fair play to Brian Cox.
He was extremely good in it.

But over-all, a shade of the original version.

Definitely no where near as good as the original but it was ok.

    Christ, I agree with Angelwhore.
And what was the ****ing deal with the horses?

some friends of mine saw it last nighit and said it was terrifying... one of the lads was crying or something in the cinema apparently :p and he slept with the lights on.

but I seriously doubt it is near as good as the original
*shrug* might go see it tonight, so we shall see what I think of it then

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 726 ✭✭✭lamda

The original is a classic but i dont think they messed it up as much as I thought they would.. it was quite entertaining but nowhere near as creepy as the original.. maybe it was the japenese..
    "Musi musi??":D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,947 ✭✭✭BLITZ_Molloy

Well I hadn't seen the original and I really enjoyed this even if it was inferior.

    One question:
The kid said that they shouldn't have set the girl free. What did it matter if she was in the well or not? She'd still have killed anybody who didn't make a copy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭hussey

I liked it, I've heard some good storied/hype about it for a while now

but I seen a trailer on TV last night (after I had seen it) and it probably would have ruined the film for me as :
in the trailer you see the da dead
you see the girl coming out of the TV
and when the boy says with bloody nose "She never sleeps"

as my g/f seen the trailer and when everything looks hunky dorey, she turns to me and says "What about the bit where the boy has a bloody nose?"

yeah, there is ring2 which is a sequel kinda..

it takes place about 8 days or so from the end of ring (the jap version) and continues on, exploring the legend of sadako etc etc. it's pretty cool, but the subbing is terrible on the DVD.

afaik ring0 is a prequel yeah, haven't seen it yet though

I agree with angelwhore, it was a poor effort and it doesn't do justice to the original. Too much hype.

I havent seen the original but I thought it was definetly a thrilling movie !! Hmm the only thing that didnt really fit was when the girl suddenly came out of the tv.

HAHAHA I DID! I was wondering why it loaded so fast and it was something like C:\windows\desktop\ringscene2-1.html or something!

Should i see the japanesse film first?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

    yeah elmo

some mates and I were smoking in the car last night, in an old barnyard..

and one of the lads dave started talking about how freaky it would be if we saw sadako outside the car window..

needless to say 15-20 minutes of paranoid ramblings and shouting followed while dave kept stirring it up shouting "i see her, I see her!"

Wow, never thought I'd ever agree with Angelwhore. Especially on the second part.
AND the Yank version messed up the scene where she comes out of the TV

Everything about the remaike pissed me off but the section when they're going down the well was totally fluffed. See... the whole "frolic in the brine, goblins be thine" thing really gave me the willies. The thing about the Jap version is it tapped into a whole ancient storytelling tradition of goblins and monsters and ghosts haunting the living to right a wrong. In fact, Ring follows a fairly traditional genre of Jap theatre.

I can't blame they Yanks for adapting it to fit an American Western audience but they could at least have done it a little more intelligently.

Ring was wonderful in its zen-like minimalism used to maximum effect. Obviously the US version went way over the top on the makeup and special effects. What was all that about 'Samara's' telekinetic abilities? ZZZZZZ.

    What a load of crap.

The Orig Jap version was good but I didn't find it scary either. I thought the remake was good enough. Gore Verbinksi seemed to be really really influenced by the Shining though. The long silent shots were the most obvious of the bits ripped off.

It was entertaining though. Brian Cox was very good as usual. Naomi Watts is proving to be a damned fine actress.

I just saw this tonight.. it's excellent!
Did anyone see the part where the ring pops up for a split second during the movie?
Or am i gonna die in 7 days haha

Went to see it the weekend and tbh i found it very entertaining, i aint a critic so im not gonna criticise it bout being "too hollywood" and other **** people are finding wrong with it, some tense scenes in it and overall a good stroyline, well worth the money!!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

there shouldn't be a "ring" anywhere in the damn film

    /me mutters

    damn hollywood

I saw that. It just came up for a second. Sort of a subliminal message, but not a clear one.

    I'd agree there definetly.
I'd say the main fault with the TV sequence was the retarded CGI 'Static' Samara... Completely ruined the tension of the scene, and as someone else put it... Throwing in a car-chase while it was going on completely destroyed any effect it had.

I thought it was good as remakes go. I've seen all three japanese Ring films, but could still tolerate The Ring. The acting and screenplay were abysmal, and the plot was incredibly full of ****, and it was dumbed down a **** load, but still, it was well directed. It did have some scary bits.
The horses thing was so ****ing stupid, as was the well bit. But it had some really stupid lines though, namely "She never sleeps," what the **** is that supposed to mean? That, and "I think that before you die, you see the ring." Much forehead smacking going on there. Where the **** did she get that from? It's bull****, no relevance to the film at all. It was clearly just for the poster. AND THERE'S NO ****ING RING, like I've been saying since I heard of this version.
I actualy MST3Ked it with my friend who had also seen Ring when I went to see it. Makes the stupid bits more amusing.

    AND THERE'S NO ****ING RING
I haven't seen the original (yet) but I thought the ring was the light coming in from the top of the well when it was covered up..

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

afaik the "ring" is the whole cycle..
view video, pass it on.. someone else views video.. blah blah

that whole **** about it being the light from the cellar is bull :)

I downloaded the death video from kazaa tonight.
In retrospect, it looks like something you would find on rotten.com, and consider tame.

Its the context which makes it scary. In the original at least. Ive heard enough bad things about the remake to Steer Well Clear(TM).

Saw Ring 2 on Friday, sorry to say its a Bad sequel. Deserving of the capital. Whereas the post-Ring environment involved going to the DVD extras, seeing that you could play the video, deciding you didnt want to play it after all and clicking no, and then FREAKING when it starts playing anyway, the post-Ring 2 discussion centred around
laughing at the police officers own brand of Terrible Acting, laughing at the doctor stumbling zombie-like towards the pool clutching his VCR, and wondering why the morgue at the beginning contained midget-sized rooms for the bodies :)
You could say that it didnt have the same effect.

i havent seen the ring and dont intend to bcos the whole idea seems to be crap and it looks crappy from the clip i saw,but i am curious, is there any way to prevent yourself from dieing (within 7 days) after you watch the tape, or is it like pulled the kerryman's atom bomb grenade and i'm going to die soon....

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

just watch the damn film :)

shinji.. I liked ring2.. it was a different kind of film to ring1 obviously, the suspense was gone and they were just trying to explain things.

my sis watched it and it freaked her out a lot more than ring ., which I found odd :)

I wish you wouldnt call me that, and I hope it was an honest to goodness mistake :) It was the suspense which made Ring for me though, and I think trying to explain it only detracted from it in the end.

I'm still wondering what th edeal with this is.
The boy says "You weren't meant to set her free". Why does it matter that Somara was let out of the well? 'She could go on killing whether she was there or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,472 ✭✭✭Sposs

Can someone explain to me how the little lad at the start of the film was drawing pictures of the girl and talking to her long before he even saw the video?

crap, sorry asuka heh, i was stuck in an evangelion loop :p

yeah, I see where you're coming from, and ring2 defo wasn't as good as ring1 but i still think it's a good film, and it explains a few things.

now if only I could see ring 0 soon

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,202 ✭✭✭Swifty

Yeah I feel pretty much the same as everyone else whose seen the original before seeing this. Like AW said they really shouldnt have shown so much of young 'samara' it made her so much less creepy.
Horses jumping off boats? err.. thats.. terrifying.

I thought Ring 2 was pants, didn't scare me at all. Ring 0 I've yet to see is it any good?

And which guy was Brian Cox playing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Ring 0 was on Sky Movies Max 2 last night. Pretty enjoyable.....

(BTW - Brian Cox played Samara's father)

    - Dave.

crap thank god i didnt pay to se it but thats another story.

I had more enjoyment out of watching the audience jump and then laughing as some girl left in tears.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 127 ✭✭arac

Soryy guys it gave me the total ****s..but the whole sixth sense element with that little boy was a bit cringe worthy! Good Show though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,425 ✭✭✭Fidelis

Great movie! The cinematography was impressive, lots of loose ends though. Best thriller I've seen in quite a while, had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! :)
I thought it was obvious that the 'Ring' was the circle of light at the top of the well.

I was quite pleased with the ending, I was all like 'What a crap anti-climax' but the i was like 'dude this is totally sweet', totally dude.

    That was 'Totally Kyle'

    Totally.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,438 ✭✭✭TwoShedsJackson

They did a good job with the remake, at least the backstory behind the video and so on was fleshed out properly, as opposed to the Jap version where it was like 'oh no a plot hole, let's explain it away by saying I have psychic powers'.

I liked the Japanese version too, but overall I preferred the remake.

LOL... a few people walked out after the "well" incident (assuming that it was the end of the movie!). Methinks bazH was one of those people. For those who haven't seen it, DON'T LEAVE until the credits roll! Its not over when you think its over....

I really liked this movie. Purist fans of the japanese original were always going to bitch and moan (they decided they hated the movie, long before they actually saw it). It was well made, better explained than the original (the psychic kid was a bit lame, though), and the cinematography and imagery were excellent. The movie itself successfully transferred the ominous tones from the original. To me, it was a remake made by big fans of the original (not just a remake for a quick cash in!).

I look forward to Ring 2. If they keep the same screenwriter and director, there is a good chance it will be better than the original (and yet, the purists will moan). C'est la vie.

    - Dave.
