    Hi People,

I want to get stronger, fitter, possibly gain some weight

Have a set of weights, willing to do runnning, cycling, sit ups, push ups, any other types of "ups" etc don't have time for gym except maybe once a week.

Anyone got advice on what training I should be doing?

I'd recommend running as a superb way to build a solid base level of aerobic fitness. Go to a proper sports store where you can get some advice on a decent pair of running shoes. And get some breathable t-shirts/tops and perhaps leggings. Thats all you need really.

As regards how far and often you should go just start small (e.g. walk/run) and work up gradually over the weeks. Expect some muscle soreness in the legs at the beginning but dont let it stop you, thats just your body adapting. This site is packed with great advice for those new to running - newrunner.com

It's mostly about routine. You have to get used to coming home from work and throwing on the running gear and doing a workout versus flopping on the couch. Good luck and I hope you give it a try.

    niall.

Thanks for the reply Niall, any ideas on what distance I should start with - I am reasonably fit and walk 2.5 miles to school every morning which isnt a problem, have the gear already pretty much (I think I'll avoid the leggings for the moment!)

Also anyone with tips on strength training would be greatly appreciated.

Well the best distance would be 5k but in the beginning focus more on how long you are jogging for. You should be out for at least 20 minutes, a 30 minute run is a nice goal and should easily have you covering 5-6km. Make sure you can be seen if you run in the evening. Get a visibility vest to throw on top. These cost 15 or so yoyo's. Gl and hf... i bet in a few months you'll be looking around for some 5 or 10k races to enter ;)
