The graphics, the voice acting, the story and the way it's told in a graphics novel style, the slow motion shoot out (bullet time)...everything is top notch. Didn't expect it to be this good but I am well impressed. Get this when it's released.

Seems very good so far. I don't like the voice acting though, Payne's voice sounds like something out of a bad B movie and some of his lines are pretty painful. Still, the bullet time is class smile.gif

yes bullet time is an interesting thing as its like an imitation of the matrix yolk

Jump diving into a room in slow motion while shooting with 2 guns in your hands, surely that's a John Woo thing smile.gif. Interestingly enough, the 2nd difficulty level is called Hard Boiled, can't remember the rest.

As for the voice acting, yeah the imagery in the monologues can be over the top but I though it works quite well. And the quality of the voice acting is very good.

The demo of Max Payne is alledgedly exclusive on this months PC Format for those hpb'ers/snl refugees out there. Gonna play that this weekend.

Op Flashpint got a good review so based on that and the good reaction here to it I'm going to pick up that and probably Blue Shift because, despite it's 74% review, it'll be nice to have orange, green and blue Half-life cds.

Someday I might actually get sick of FPS. But not today, oh no.

I read the feature in PCG and the Makers of Max Payne - reckon that they had thought of the idea of "Bullet Time" before "The Matrix" was released.

Bit short on the first play, but when you finish it you open up new (harder?) modes to play; as far as I can see the modes you open are decided on how you play (I got New York Minute and Hard Boiled, while Dead on Arrival, which is between the others on the menu is still blanked out).

Best game I've played in a long time; I'll never get tired of watching those sniper rifle bullets zooming toward the victim in slo-mo biggrin.gif
    Essential purchase methinks.

I'm quite dissapointed with the game to be honest frown.gif

Forty quid of my hard earned pilaging money spent on what shouldn't have taken 4 years to make.

The bullet time is a nice innovation. I'll give it that. The gameplay gets a bid repetative though. Once I had slow-mo'd my way down stairs a few time in mid-air(which I must admit was a damn good laugh smile.gif), it got a bit repetative. It came to a point where you couldn't really run in with all guns blazing in real time, slow mo was a necessity.

It's alright, besides the finicky slow-mo action, there's nothing special :/

Not worth £40 and shouldn't have taken 4 years to make.

All I can hope is that DN Forever is not as dissapointing as this.

**** . Max is TPS? I fupping hate TPS! Ah well sure I'll give it a bash.

But seriously though, why do programmers think that a camera outside of the head is a good idea? It's pants that's what it is. I mean it's just plain wrong. Platformers can get away with it allright but that's cos we've always looked at the character from the outside. But for shoot em ups, give me first person pers. or give me, quite literally, death.

Even Tomb Raider has an excuse to go outside the head, and we all know what that is. But TR is essentially a platformer for the thinking man/woman.

Yes, but if you've played First Person Shooters featuring dives etc, you'll see why they opted for the third-person perspective.

Is there not a toggle of TPS to FPS?

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

I completed it after 2 stints of about 7 hours each, the only reason i took a break was because it was 4am and i had to go sleep smile.gif

The game is fantastic, although having finished it i question its replayability, especially with no multiplayer mode. And whats the story with those dream levels? They are completely pointless, irritating and the game would be much better without them.

A great game the first time around, but i don't think i'll be coming back to it...

    It is RIDICULOUSLY good.

And it was conceptualised long before the matrix - there was a guy on the quake scene ages ago called MaxPayne.

Is the Radeon a 64 mb card? the gfx card always makes the biggest difference..

it is ridiculously good. the gameplay and graphics are so good, you just can't stop playing it.

only bad point i can think of is I finished it too quickly. there is the hard-boiled version though, should be even better then.

Depends on which version of Windows you're talking about, Hobbes. I've often seen 95 running (somewhat unhappily I'd admit) on as little as 12/16MB in the past.

    I got it (!)
It runs sweetly actually. Loads of Detail, smooth frame rate , bullet cases bouncing around in slow-motion ...
Its very Linear and perhaps a tad repetitive though(?)
Great story, Guns , and slow motion ...

I used to run windows95 on a 485dx4-100 with 8 megs of RAM. Upgraded to 16megs which made the world of difference. Ran win98 on my p200-mmx with 32megs and it ran fine.

Just finished it a few minutes ago.
My opinoin hasn't changed much, it's utterly impossible to kill the tougher enemies without your trusty Bullet-Time.

Like Kaz, I doubt it's replayability.

Naaa, I wouldn't say it's impossible to kill the tougher bosses. Bullet time makes them easier to deal with but you can outsmart the AI. The hit and hide tactic works well against most baddies. I remember the guy at the end of the car park was tough. When he first appears he'll throw grenades at you and then use dual Ingram. So just run up to him and unload a full magazine of jackhammer ammo into him as soon as you see him (only tried that cause he kept on killing me smile.gif)

I'd say I must be at the end pretty soon.
But its a really great game, its a pity that you cant reload the scenarios...
You know like the way you can go back and play the comic book bits, well you should be able to play on from there, cos there are some pretty cool fights...
I liked the trippy valkyr bit too, "I'm in a graphic novel...I'm in a computer game..."
    That was cool smile.gif
reminds me of the time I took Valkyr...

I really should get the demo sooner or later.
One thing thats annoying me, The Matrix did not invent 'bullet time'. Time Slice (to give it its 'industy' name , man) has been around for years, i first saw it in a commercial in 91 i think. Remember the Stones video for 'Like a rolling stone'? Matrix me granny smile.gif

Depends very much on what you define as "running". Waiting 10 minutes for windows to load and have it disk trash for 1 minute every time a program does something is "running" then yes it does.

its a remarkable incident that the icon which was used on bulletin boards all around the world would be adopted by a game company as their main character, and that the game is absolutely fantastic.

same goes with this little fella icon33.gif (duke nukem 3d) and this one too icon35.gif (some game called quake?!?). the conspiracy theory is born smile.gif (or am i just bored out of my títs?)

    Good game.

    Not perfect, but good.

The voice-acting in the graphic novel scenes is del;iberately hammy - kinda giving it that "Mike Hammer" feel. Reminds me a bit of the voice-acting from Gabriel Knight actually. The idea of a graphic novel is well cool, although I was disappointed that at some points this was forgone for "game-engine cut-scenes".

Bullet-time is wicked, but has anyone else noticed that when moving from bullet time back to normal time (most notably after doing a shootdodge move) your guns either stay firing slowly for a fraction of a second, or stop altogether. Minor niggle, but there you go.

Third person perspective cuts down the redraw requirements while pulling a dive manouver. I have to say it is the best TPS implementation I've seen - the camera is very smart about its positioning.

I think the "self-modifying difficulty" is a great idea, and seems to work pretty well. You do crap for a while, and you notice that the guys are constantly missing with the first bullet or two. THen run off a couple of headshots and all of a sudden you are facing much tougher opposition.

As for the game being short....well....I'm only managing to spend 30-60 minutes on it each night, so I'm hoping it will last me several weeks before I even get to play it on Hard Boiled. Hell, I havent gotten anything larger than twin Ingrams yet.

Weapon variety is ok, but not great. However, each weapon is very distinct in its behaviour, and I've found myself switching between Deagle, single and dual Berettas, both shotguns, single and twin ingrams a lot, as well as having fun with molotovs and grens. I like this - a game where there are (so far) no completely pointless weapons. Neato.

With the level-editor included (which is a neat editor) and a deluxe editor on the way, I think we can expect a lot of custom maps and mods in short order....which will partially make up for the lack of multiplayer.

On that issue - realistically - you couldnt do bullet-time in a multiplayer game which is one of the main reasons it was dropped.

Overall....good game. Possibly a great game, but apparently a bit short. Some minor graphic glitches, but otherwise damn sweet.

    jc
