Name for our Seminar

We are looking for a catchy title for our seminar on 29th August.

When I spoke to Mary O'Rourke about it (name-dropper smile.gif ) - she suggested something along lines of "cheap access" but personally I don't like word 'cheap'.

I think "Getting Ireland Online" would be a great name but as Esat, Eircom and ODTR will be there as well as the Minister, I think it is too pointed towards one party !

Other ideas I have had are:

Better Access - Faster

Internet Access Now!

Getting Ireland Connected

Any ideas or suggestions?

Martin

Don't think we actually need IOFFL in title as it might be better in sub-title,something like:

.....Getting Ireland Connected......
A Seminar on Internet Access Hosted by IrelandOffline

How about,

Internet Access For All

Affordable Net Access

The Net Cost (i suppose we could make a silly pun on the word net)

No more frustrating, debilitating per minute billing and we will be able to use the net at a reasonable price. Won't we all be happy then!

Flat Rate Net Access

Freedom To Surf

The Internet without the cost

Bringing the Internet Forward

Staying on-line without the fine

i dunno, i amn't sure

how about something catchy like...

"Goverment and Telco's unite! Stop scratching your arses and do what we say! We all want free OC3 lines with no bandwidth caps.. Give it to us, I saaaaid GIVE IT TO US or i'll hold my breath till i turn purple!"

something along those lines.. maybe a bit long for a billboard but catchy none the less.

What about:

"The Net will make us all one"
Internet Seminar hosted by Ireland Offline.

Or something around that point that the Internet will make us all come together, like the whole Island of Ireland, not just two countries.

Or probably something more about The EC like:

"Internet in Ireland compared to the rest of the EC members"

Anyway, probably they sound silly, but at least it's something.

The Internet Society plugs the slogan "The Internet is for Everyone".

What is the actual objective of this seminar - i.e. to get as much of society o the internet, or maybe to separate the truth from the spin?

What are the telcos going to spend their floor time talking about?

Hehe.. how about "The Irish Telcos Truth and Reconciliation Congress"

"Telco Celebrity Deathmatch"

I like "Getting Ireland Connected". It's simple and quite short, and that's what IrelandOffline ought to be about.

I am fully backing adams suggestion. Maybe we could throw in a "for everybody", which could focus on
a) the price-issue (affordability for the oridinary Joe Blox) and
b) the OS issue (MacOS, UNIX,, LINUX, etc. users should be able to connect as easily as Windows users).

I like idea of word 'faster' in there somewhere - double meaning as in faster downloads but also making it happen faster smile.gif

Somethinh like..."Affordable access - faster!"

I'm just wondering about having the term "seminar" in the title.

To be honest, I think it would put a lot of people off.

Why not try something like "The Ireland Offline Net Meeting"? (being careful to insert a space between the last two words to avoid infringement of copyright!)

It's a sort of play on the name of a piece of software which is for (video) conferencing which is basically what the meeting will be.

Anyway, just thought I'd put in my ha'penny's worth.

I kind of like rickoshea's "eIreland: The Net Imperative" although wondering if it is specific enough. But it does have that sense of urgency we are trying to suggest.

Also, Delphi91 might have a valid point about calling it a "seminar". How about calling it a "summit"?

"eIreland: The Net Imperative"
An Internet Summit hosted by IrelandOffline

Nope. We don't seem to be having any problems with the Ireland Online and Ireland Offline comparison thus far. It's also topical, in that the meeja will pick up on the comparison and use it. I like it.

It's that word that makes me like it, I think it does suggest urgency, and it also suggests a requirement: it's imperative that the problems be ironed out; it's imperative that unmetered products and services be made available; it's imperative the the local loop be unbundled; it's imperative that the ODTR, Eircom and the OLO's start to sort things out.

That might very well be the case.

But remember, the object of the exercise is to put bums on seats and to get the message across to the great unwashed.

So, to do that, you have to attract Joe Public. And the only way to attract Joe Public is to make the meeting attractive.

The meeting has to be marketed and part of that is a suitable name. In my opinion, I don't think that using Seminar in the title would be appropriate. To my mind, it smacks of a business meeting/conference, academic summer school etc. And that's the last thing that a member of the general public will want to attend, especially mid-week.

Call it a meeting, or something similar. But I don't think Seminar is wise.

Anyone on the list into marketing???

That was my off-the-cuff brainwave. I was thinking summit as in important meeting of leaders of (usually opposing) groups. Also attaches some importance to it.

It might be a bit pretentious though, and again it was just an offthecuff suggestion.

Seminar does imply that there's some teaching or training going on, and I'm sure the Eircoms/esats would be very comfortable with that, although our members are probably not going there to get a lesson from Eircom.

OTOH, seminar also implies some interactivity with input from the attendees, so..........whatever.

Anyone on the list into marketing???

Depends on your definition of "into". I'm not a professional marketer, but there's an element of it involved in my business. I'm mostly just interested in it though. And thinking about it now, I think whoever suggested that "seminar" mightn't be right, uh, might be right...
sem·i·nar (sm-när)
n.
A small group of advanced students in a college or graduate school engaged in original research or intensive study under the guidance of a professor who meets regularly with them to discuss their reports and findings.
A course of study so pursued.
A scheduled meeting of such a group.
A meeting for an exchange of ideas; a conference.

The dictionary definition *kind* of fits, in that it is a meeting or conference where people will study the current situation and exchange ideas. However, "seminar" to me means discussion in a kind of "colle***" or "chatty" way. If you were going to change that, I think it should be more forceful, more "Irish Internet user pushing for fair treatment". With that in mind, I don't think "summit" is very appropriate either. I can't think of an alternative at this time though, I'm just thinking out loud. I still think "net imperative" is very clever though, and sums the situation up admirably.
