As the title says what did you dream you would work as when you grew up.

I myself always wanted to be a fighter pilot. My parents took me to an airshow in the UK when I was 4 and since then I was hooked. Even went so far as to attend RAF interviews in Belfast a few years back but it wasn't meant to be......

a pilot (just a normal one not fighter).

Even took subjects in school that were mandatory to become one (physics, maths etc)

then i dont know what happened, i realised about 16 when i was standing at a fair height that i indeed had vertigo

(dunno how that happened, but i was never afraid of heights when i was a kid, and i done some crazy stuff at big heights back then)

depends when your talking about though as a "kid", up there ^^ is high school wise.

Where as in primary school i just wanted to play for Celtic :p

Follow a family tradition and be a soldier.
Alas, turned out not to be, despite a stint in the FCA. Still, probally for the best as I might might had a problem with actually having to point a rifle at someone.

Ever since my uncle took me to see the Concorde take off from Dublin airport I wanted to be a pilot. This evetually grew into being a fighter pilot, and now while I'm still growing up at the age of 21 I want to go into space :)

I wanted to be a crime fighting super hero.

... but failing that, I wanted to work in radio or television - presenting, producing, editing, whatever - I didn't care... When I was 7 or 8 years old I thought the BBC were the most professional company in the world and I aspired to work for them some day. RTÉ would have done, at a push, but the BBC - yeah! that was "it"!

That dream is still somewhat alive in me, although I'd rather radio to television for some reason.

    ...

A friend of mine and me once ran what we thought of as a pirate radio station at the time (we were kids ;) ). Basically, we hooked up some souped up walkie talkies (they were all the rage back then in the estate I lived in in Limerick ;) ) to our stereo equipment and "broadcasted" every day to all our friends. Nobody could switch on their cheap walkie talkies (and all the kids had them!) without hearing us, with our irreverant brand of humour and alternative music.

These days, I do a bit of DJ'ing here and there, but that's about as close as I've gotten to those early aspirations, working full time, as I am, in a company that sells Danish windows.

Along the way, I've gone into various industries, working in a few bars, running an Internet café, counting (LOTS of) money in a security company, building web sites in an e-commerce company, doing administration work for a college, and doing entertainment work (quiz nights, discos, etc.) for meself... to name but a few... ;)

The job I have now is a real career job, with great prospects, money-wise, - but it's just a day job - it's just an earner, - it's not something that particularly excites me or pushes my buttons. Still- I'm happy with it, and I'm making the best of it. The other things I do on the side keep me creative - ... keep me sane ;)

Parents wanted me to be a doctor but weren't pushy. I kinda thought being a doctor would be cool. I like to help people and would have had a good bedside matter. However applying myself and studying was a no go for me. Couldn't be arsed was my attitude. Still is to a lesser degree :( and where has it gotten me ? More money that my doctor friends and less working hours. My own fault... :p

After working in a hospital fulltime during summers and weekends while in college I wouldn't want to be one. The whole system sucls. They treat you like **** as a student and intern and the system also turns you into a jumped up little bollox. I've seen many friends I know take on a "I'm superior to you" attitude once they put on the white coat

I'm 25 now and work in IT , I'd like to go into webdev a bit more and save money for things later in life. I think when I'm 35 I might go off to America and get a commercial pilots licence. I know a guy that did this at the same age. Works for Ryanair now. Be nice to be able to fly a jumbo.

While we want to be something when we're kids, we can still dream of careers as an adult and theres nothing stopping us from changing career and going for what we want. If you fall on your ass it doesn't matter. Of course you'd probably need to be free of any commitments before you do this.

    Apache pilot aswell.

The oul lad brought home these two fold-out posters from the Firepower magazine, one of the AH-64A and one of the Trident class nuclear subs, both had the cut-aways with the lable boxes full of information.

I've known how counter measures, Hellfires, radar and nuclear subs work since I was about 6/7.

When i was ~4 I wanted to be a farmer with a fleet of big fnuck-off tractors with every concievable appendage, utility and trailer.

    Ph33r my Massey....

Wanted and still do to have total control over the world, totalitarian style. I'd be ten times worse than stalin and bush combined. I'm still young so its actually possible, i'd show no sign of remorse for my actions as to be brutally honest i couldn't give two fuks about anyone elses plights. I'm solemnly serious.

Umm, well, I dont remember what I wanted to be when I grow older, you see, I was sometimes obsessed with being a doctor or a football player "The guard" [not the USA football of course :p] and sometimes, someone who works in a bank or a pool player, a good one!! :p

Umm, yeah, even though I am an 18 years old girl, I have more attraction to boys stuff ^^; .. what can I say? I lived my life with my cousin who is younger than me by 1.5 years, and he was a guy of course :p

Lately I am attracted in playing pool [if that what you call it, you know, the one that looks like snooker ^^;]

then i wanted to be god. the reason being that my mother told me if i didn't behave god would see me. puzzled i asked how and she said god sees everything. i liked that idea

Always wanted to be a fighter pilot, for as long as i remember. I think its still my number one ambition.. but one ill never fulfill. The optic nerve to my right eye was damaged when i was young so i dont have anything close to the vision requirements that are necessary :(

Taking that into account, im currently aiming to be a computer/electronic engineer.

I wanted to be a Astronaut/Space Shuttle pilot (still do :D - among other things).

Then I went through a phase of wanting to be a Navy SEAL and run around strangling people with piano wire whilst having boot polish smeared on my face.

When i was little I wanted to be:
    A games designer
    A comic writer
    A dictator
    A religious leader <of my own religion>
    An actor
    A writer <in general>
and... A singer in a rock band.

The last two I'm still hoping for. Though don't have the looks to be an MTV musician. Thank god.

A fighter pilot or an actor.
    2 extremes, but hownever.

Currently work in mindless computer job. Have to pay the bills somehow.
Am an actor though :) Still counting down time til the day I can tell me boss to stick his poxy job and go act fulltime.
    *sigh*
    More exams first though...

A binman. Seriously, a binman. There was something mysterious about it, putting stuff into the big gaping truck and pressing the buttons that send it into the dark clanking depths deep within...

    I can't remember anything else. :)

well, i still don't know what i want to be when i grow up (or when, approximately that will be!)

age 6ish : either a nurse or a pop star
(i think i even had a brief flirtation with wanting to be a priest, before my mother pointed out to me that women can't actually be priests!!)

age 10 to 16: i wanted to be a vet, which stuck with me right up to secondary school, before i did some work experience in a vet's and promptly decided i wasn't cut out for that. too much ickiness!

age 18: Clinical speech and language studies, but i didn't get the points for that.

age 19 : pure psychology, but i didn't get that,

age 20: repeated psychology, and again, didn't get it,

Now: muddling through an arts degree, completely clueless as to what i want to do next.

it's quite scary really, because i change my mind from one week to the next, ranging from some government department, like foreign affairs,or justice, or equality, to the whole humanitarian/ human rights area, like amnesty international or concern, to women's aid or the rape crisis centre, or even going back and trying for psychology again, or law, or.......

it's all pretty hazy, actually, but i suppose i have years to decide yet!

hmmmm........ that pop star idea's not half bad, though!

i wanted to be fire engine or a set of traffic lights.
now it is a different story. i wanna be a rockstar up on the stage slamming on my guitar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭Dun

I wanted to be many of the above things, but perhaps the wierdest thing I wanted to be was a priest at one stage - not because I was any way religious but because I wanted to do exorcisms after hearing this young priest talking about them to a group at our school, and saying how he was chosen to train for it but chickened out. Seemed cool at the time

If only I had some sense of direction now..

Computer programmer. Grew up. Became one. Hated it.
Still waiting for a new idea to come along.
Have been a binman also, and the magic button-pressing and having stuff disappear is pretty sh!t-cool. For five minutes.

I get kind of sad/guilty when I see people who have a real ambition to be something, and can't for some physical reason or cause they just aren't good enough while I know I myself could do the job but have absolutely no desire to. No?
