Swimming for weight loss?

I have been reading bits and pieces around the web about fitness training...and I have this query...maybe somebody here can help me out..
I am going to try to lose some weight and was wondering about which form of exercise is the best...

Swimming is the activity I enjoy the most, so for example I would be much more inclined to go swimming for an hour than go running for half an hour. I am wondering though how does swimming compare to running for losing weight...

    thanks

not an expert, but id say very good.

Excellent cardio, works a lot of the body, good for your back and no impact on your knees or feet.

    Fun too :)

seems to be a good fat burner, but fitness wise I've heard it's not half as good as running. I know runners who were unable to run for various injuries and they claim to lose a lot of fitness despite swimming regularly.

Avoid the time and pain of exercise and dieting.

The best way to lose 2 Stones of ugly fat quickly is to cut your head off!

You don't even put the weight back on. Great eh?

Water Fitness and Road Fitness are two very distinct categories in my experience. I think at the heart of this seemingly ridiculous statement is ability/technique level and the related efficiency.

Good runners are not always good swimmers and vice versa, and so they can get less out of the energy burned.

I played Waterpolo for about 6 years when I was younger and often found that while my swimming and general water fitness was very high, it did not transfer quite so well into an easy running fitness, because I was never a good long distance runner.

One thing I have to remark upon however is that as a diver at present, I know a lot of people who are built like seals and carrying a lot of extra weight, who have exceptional endurance in the water but could not run to save their lives.

    JAK.

    Thanks for all the replies....
When I go to the pool I go to swim..and I swim pretty hard for the time that I am there...well as hard as I can anyhow......

Those poeple who just go and mess about are annoying..and get in the way...buts its a free world I guess...

I think I will try to combine both running and swimming in the future.
    cheers
