Used to go to a school which was involved with a drug rehabilitation centre. Merchant's Quay project or something.

Anyway, one of the people involved told us that the reason that chippers and restaurants around the country/world have replaced vinegar bottles with vinegar sachets is that the junkies thought that the acid in the vinegar would clean the needle. So they would take the lid of and stir the needle in it, replace the lid and some poor sod puts the vinegar on his chips.

Didn't have any effect the needles obviously. I'm sure citric acid in fruit doesn't either. So not only do the junkies get infected but so do innocent people. Bloody disgusting but I know that the vinegar thing definitely used to happen.

    jesus :eek::eek::eek::eek:

i wont be buying any more fruit from that market down back of henry street no more :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,315 ✭✭✭ballooba

Could also be a rumour put out by Tesco's or Dunnes To stop people shopping on Moore Street. The traders down there are getting a swanky new market under the O'Connel Street Development plan.

Anyway those women on Moore Street would scare even a junkie off messing with their goods.

I wonder if this is like the razor blades in apples myth in America. Loads of parents wont let their kids go trick or treating because of the fear of some ****er sticks razor blades or poison into sweets and giving them to their kids. Only one reported case of it ever happening and even then the person who did knew the child.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

even then the person who did knew the child

As I recall it was actually a family member who killed the child.

jasus that thing about the oranges is freaky. It's probably true. Personally I find that when I think of something like this, if it hasn't been done already then it will be done soon.

I'm glad I dont eat fruit

it's getting to the stage that even "natural" food is unsafe. Unless it's sealed and canned, don't buy it..you only find rats' heads in sealed things.

The point is, not much is sfae anymore really, but it puts the onus of stalls and shops to have a more secure thing than having fruit outside their shop

Argh! The razor blade in the apple thing is just making me cringe!

Can you imagine biting into an apple and a razor blade slipping in between your teeth then slicing through your gum, then you accidently swallow it from shock and so on! AAArrrgh!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

wish i had the razor blades in the apple idea last hallowe'en. Ah well there's always next hallowe'en. Fair exchange for egging my house methinks

Sounds like some sort of urban myth to be honest.

Man that is FUBAR. All junkies should be thrown in a burning bus and driven off a cliff imo...

    is that cruel enough ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭Cian

    Lies.
I live in the area specified, have yet to see this "sign" in any of the shops, buy and eat fresh fruit regularly. It is just a variant of the apple/razors urban myth. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a supermarket helping to spread this myth, as very few people in the area buy anywhere other than convenience stores or small family run enterprises.

Well Cian, hate to break this to you but I have lived in Dublin city for nearly ten years and I heard this story maybe 3-4 years ago. Not about it being displayed in a shop but that it happens. I have never managed to confirm it to be true but there are a serious amount of junkies about so you never know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 134 ✭✭Dawg

Sounds like rubbish to me. Cant junkies get free needles from the clinics anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,522 ✭✭✭Dr. Loon

Doesn't sound impossible to me... I also used t live in Christchurch, and there's a hell of alot of junkies floatin around there. If it isn't true, then the shop is stupid for putting up a sign and giving the eejits ideas!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Someone should spread a rumour in the junkie world that sticking a needle into a live sewer rat will sterilise their needles. If the disease doesn't kill them, hopefully they will be too high to get back out of the ****ing sewer.

I'd feel more pity for the rats having to put up with them.

Yeah, of course it's true..the shop is really going to publicise what happened and put itself out of business....

well thats why you dont eat in "Charlies II" in the back of temple bar!..... i mean ive seen ppl do it while i was walkin past.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

    Sound like crap to me.

(As was mentioned) It's a parallel to the broken glass in babyfood thing and if I remember correctly that whole hysterical incident was eventually proven to have been exagerated (if not completely untrue?).

Let's hope this current rumour dissapears soon lest we have frightened citizens running screaming from their apples.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Sounds like an urban legend to me, getting spammed with the stupid story all week. I haven't seen any of these ads around Dublin lately.

As for 'innocent people being infected'....when was the last time someone caught HIV from eating an orange lol. I know it's a pretty sick thing for a junkie to do, but the chances of catching anything like this are so unlikely it'd never happen.

Makes me remember a friend of mine who unfortunately went to prison in Greece. His cellmate told him that there was a syringe with heroin smuggled in and he could be in on the action if he wanted.

MyMate- "You are passing a needle round the prison?"
Cellmate - "Yeah! And you too can take some!"
MyMate- "Have you not heard of AIDS?"
Cellmate - "Yeah but that only happens to gays"
    Marmite - "!"

Well if there's one country that knows about Gays .....

Actually homosexuality isn't that rife in Greece. I can't say the same for the Greek church but I can say that for the society in general. I think it's just a phallousy, fnar.

Just on the subject of HIV, even more disturbing again is a thing called "bug chasing"..
For those who want to be disturbed theres a completly sensationalist article on it here:
    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=17380
and a more realistic counter-article here:

The issue of junkies sticking needles into oranges/lemons is true, tho i haven't seen or heard of it happening in a few years now. I work part time in a shop in the city center and a few years ago we would have to keep checking the fruit and we were throwing out lemons nearly ever day.

The myth was that the junkies were doing it to clean the needles, but i heard from a copper a few years later that they would stick the needle in the fruit, and try and get some of the juices into the syring and then use it with water to disolve the heroin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

Dunno bout the fruit, but I heard of the vinegar one years ago. Can't have chipper-chips without vinegar tho so feck it.

Having said that, those "Bug Chasers" should just be shot in the head now. The amount of people out there in agony and dying from AIDS and these retards are looking to catch it? Heres an idea... give it to them and then let them catch the flu too. Idiots.

the reason that you heard it three to four years ago is because it's a urban legend. that's what they are. fictional narratives that recycle themselves every few years.
