    768 SDRAM pc133 (various brands)
    1x 80gb uata 133 (drone x).
    1x 15gb uata 66.

    </note I might install Solaris x86 soon>

    Laptop

Gentoo Linux optimised for the K6.
    Running ext3 and Xfs. Linux 2.4.19 & 2.4.20.

    Compaq Presario 1235.
    AMD K6 233.
    168 mb pc 100 ram.
    5gb hdd, uata 66.
Ne2000 PCMCIA ethernet adapter (built in dongle) sweet.
    Lucent Mars Chipset Linmodem.

    Home Lan Server

    Debian Linux 2.2.20

Intel 386 15mhz or (40mhz with the turbo button pushed).
    16mb ram (30 pin simms)
    80mb EIDE hard disk
    Ext2
    DHCP server
    NAT server
    Firewall

<note this box does exactly what I need it to do. I don't need a hugely powerful box to complete this task. A 386 accomplishes all I ask of it and does it well>

I forgot to mention. Sometimes my Laptop also doubles as a motion sensor, which is handy for when I go out and get paranoid about my motorcycle being stolen.

I just attach a webcam to the USB port on my laptop and have it detect and take pictures of anything it defines as motion, running the Video for Linux utility called 'motion'.

And a partridge in a pear tree.

I couldn't be arsed typing in all that stuff, theres plenty of threads like this already. I will say though, that the original poster may be a bit misguided. You seem to be saying that you should judge whether to upgrade based on the machines everyone else has? Might want to rethink that, as its a little stupid. Or hopefully you were just joking. I'll upgrade when I think that my current machine is too slow, I think thats a reasonable attitude. I suppose if you are lucky enough to have money to burn though, you can buy all the gear you want, whether it will be utilized properly or not.

I would have thought that comparing 'puters was a kind of a pointless task there is always some faster kit JUST after coming to the market, but having said that I think that there are some big things around the corner (and already here) with graphics, processors and storage ...
    examples:
GeforceFX will come out and all older graphics cards will become significantly cheaper ... rumours have it that ATI will also be doing some fecking around with their graphics core (changing a 96bit wide internal bus to 128bit etc etc) and this will cause the 9700 pro to become a bit cheaper ... and I am not sure but I thought I read about serial AGP (or something like that anyway, basically its all about lunatic bandwidth) which may come out later this year?? .. if it does then the 8 X agp boards will become cheap(er)

Intels newest 3.something GHz processor has hyper threading as will all later P4's (good bit of a perfomance boost)... wait until Intel has released a few faster models and they may be cheap enough to afford...

Serial ATA is the canines gonads ... more and more products coming on stream (so: products becoming cheaper and cheaper), wait a while and there should be some affordable Motherboards that support all of the above

    [edit]
er .. I suppose I better do some comparing :D
    Supermicro P6DGE
    Dual PIII 1GHz slot 1
    1 GB pc100 ram
    Adaptec 29160
    1 X U160 10000 rpm 16MB cache 73GB
    1 X U160 36GB
    Soundblaster Live
    Geforce 3 Ti200 64MB
    Memorex DVD
Memorex CD-RW (both memorex are rebadged lite-ons)
An iffy external 56K modem ... I must get that sorted
Win 2k Prof ... but I hear that XP Prof can be better at multi-processing, anyone upgrade a dual proc machine from 2k to XP and noticed a performance increase?
    [/edit]

I've only seem one other computer in here that's lower spec than this. I want to upgrade cos I will get a big performance gain if I do, but atm it really isn't necessary. This machine will run most games fine. Only problems it has had is with doom3 :D
and people include your 3dmark score if you can.

What's the attraction of a PowerLeap adapter versus a new motherboard?

Because it cheaper! Especially when you consider the Dell has a non standard case/motherboard/and psu connector. So you'd have to change all three at the same time. Probably have to chnage the ram at the same time too. Easier and cheaper to buy a PowerLeap adapter no? Also if this isn't a 370 socket board then you gain that by adding the poerleap and you also gain tualatin support. Gives you a lot more options. Incidentally the tualatin celerons are a great budget buy for this kind of a machine.
