Dev, maybe you can answer this one.

Is it ok to talk about Direct Connect hubs here? Since the hubs do not hold any data on them, i would assume there is nothing illegal about them at all. I bow to your judgement tho

(ps, i also think its well past the time that theres a decent irish one)

If you'll recall, the reason napster was such an easy target for the lawyors was that it used a centralized server to sort through the searching data.

Programs like Kazaa act as a medium for allowing p2p filesharing. There is no elicit or illegal data held on servers owned by kazaa. They accept no responsibility for WHAT is being shared, therefore it is quite legal.

Hell, Eircom advertise on Kazaa, before i switched to Lite i saw an ad for I-stream every few minutes.

I'm guessing it something similar to P2P. I used it once but it's not good on a sat connection so I ditched it.

The hubs would be similar to Kazaa's servers but I'm not sure about the content of them.

Direct connect uses hubs that hold different groups of people... you can usually only connect to one at the time, but the people there are forced to share more files, as opposed to kazaa. So it's not as global as kazaa, but some hubs specialise on specific stuff, so it's better in some areas... I think hubs hold up to 1000 or so people (can't remember exactly)

eMule also has something like hubs... it's great for finding some things... and it's open source.

Direct Connect is the best file sharing program there is, the only problem is that you need a feckass hard disk and some sort of high speed connection to test it to true potential. Although only being on a 56k hasn't stopped me from downloading something like 2 gigs of junk :cool:

Yeah just got DC++ recently and its better for more specific/obscure stuff. But its a bitch to start off. Some hubs need at least 60gb to join and it cant be install stuff either beacuse once or twice they'll notice and kick/ban you. BTW the bots have no problem with banning you instantly

I find kazaa is better beacuse I get better d/l rates beacuse you can d/l from more then one person at a time. With dc++ its only one person afaik and beacuse they have alloted slots i never d/l more then 25k/s

As i speak (12.40 xmas day) im d/ling off kazaa at 55k/s with 27mins to go on it.

IM so exicted i cant sleep its Xmas!!!

Its a central server that someone hosts we all connect and chat and share files.

Before anyone thinks of its niceness etc etc the files that are being shared are illegal and we are all going to hell.

DC is really good because of the chat feature and you can set a password and only who want gets in.

Most hubs have stupid high requirments like "100gb swedish porn"

Boards one would benefit the 56kers are most of the DSL users would login open 3 slots and leave it on all night.
So the 56kers are getting good speeds from local sources.

But again its all mp3s and toher nasty bold evil things.

I wouldnt mind except for the fact my computer is 1.5 feet from my bead and sounds like a 'the who' concert
(BTW 'The who' has the highest recorded decibel level for a concert ever, so thats loud)

But it would be grand if someone didnt have it in their room
