I walk everywhere, about 3 miles to and from college, and another good mile/mile and a half generally ontop of that each day.
    I'm *reasonably* light, 14stone, 6'2".

Really want to get a set of weights/dumbells and get a bit stronger/firm up my torso/arms.

    here's what's working for me:

I changed the way I eat. Mentally, food is now fuel, not pleasure. I eat 5 small meals a day. Only natural foods, nothing out of a box. I cut out a lot of things - no grains, legumes, dairy, starchy veg. That leaves eggs, lean meats, fish( if only I liked fish), fruit, most veg. Similar in focus to a food style called Paleolithic. I grill or stir fry in olive oil, lot's of garlic and peppers, leafy green salads every day, high protein, low carbs. I do drink a supplement shake after workouts (Ribomax by MaxiMuscle) and an occasional low carb protein bar if I can't take time for a meal. I also take multivitamins, twinlabs Diet Fuel and ZMA, fish oil capsules.

Exersize, I am in the gym strength training 3 days a week. I am focusing on full body movement exersizes, following a lot of training advice from Coach Davies of Renegade Training. I have also started training with a rugby squad twice a week, but a weak ankle has kept me away from that for a week, but back at it tonight.

I don't follow my weight, I follow my strength and general feeling. I've only been at it for 6 weeks now, but the habits are forming and I have had no motivation problems. I feel better and feel stronger, so I am making progress towards my personal goals.

What has worked for me is hard, heavy and consistent workouts.
Not into walking, although I did compete at regional level as a walker while in school [once].
    Cardio is rowing for me.

Cardio is great and has it's place but should for maximum health benefits be allied with a decent weights routine.
