Think dog soldiers meets dawn of the dead. I thought it was pretty good, great halloween flick at any rate :r

The tagline says "Best British Horror Film In The Last 30 Years". I think that accolade may go to Dog Soldiers.

This is still a fantastic movie, though. I highly recommend it. Cillian Murphy was excellent in it. Great use of music to build up suspense (particularly when Jim leaves the hospital, and the scene in the barracks at the end).

    Loved it...

The premise seems kinda similar to an old sci-fi film called Day of the Triffids(i think). You know, man wakes up in hospital, no one around, London is deserted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Yeah he was fairly candid about nicking loads of stuff from other films Day of the Triffids (man that scared me when I was a lad) and Night of the Living Dead in particular.

I can't wait to see this.

man, if its anything like 'Triffids then ill definetly go see this weekend

its good - but Day of the Triffids - the movie version, was better. wont say anything more - in case I ruin it - but I think it could have been done alot better -

Best zombie film in years at least.
Especially after the let down that was Resident Evil.

    Fantastic atmosphere.
    Brilliantly Suspensefull.

Although I found the ending wasn't to my taste.

And I'd say its more 'Day Of The Dead' than 'Dawn Of The Dead'.

I liked this film, althought I didn't enjoy it nearly half as much as I hoped I would. I guess this is down to the fact that I had been hyping the film in my own head for the past month or so, and there was no way it could possibly live up to my expectations.

Like AngelWhore said - I didn't feel like the ending was in keeping with the rest of the film, far too upbeat and twee.

Regarding the differences between Resident Evil and 28 Days Later (I personally enjoyed Resident Evil immensely, and can't remember being disappointed by anything except the c.g. for the Licker)... what I found was that the things I enjoyed most about Resident Evil were missing in 28 Days Later (lots of zombies, lots of action scenes, Milla Jovovich), and the things I enjoyed most about 28 Days Later were missing in Resident Evil (the 'what happened? what's going to happen to the world?' breaks in action, the overall sense of armageddon, sudden shocks).

    Enjoyable, but nothing fantastic.

Brilliant film, certainly one of this year's best.

And yes, the ending was a bit too happy.
It would have been perfect if he ended it when the kid crashed into the gates.

I was discussing this last night with someone and I said the same thing, then I realised what I was saying; leaving the film like that would have had people demanding their money back, it's just not a big enough piece of 'drama' to leave people satisfied.

Good film... thought it would be better, but it's still the best zombie film I've seen in recent years....

At the end of the day, I enjoyed Dog Solders more (couldn't help but compare the two).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,025 ✭✭✭yellum

Liked it. Could have been scarier but it was a bit more intelligent than most films. Ending was goody goody.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

Saw it last night, liked it a lot. It looked like it cost next to nothing to make

i noticed they used a bit of music in the film from FFX on the PS2 - anyone else notice that?

super film. The current ending feels tacked on. I would have much rather have it left at
    gate crash
as well. More of an Italian Job ending then.

I disagree (who didn't see that coming?). What made the Italian Job's ending so charming was the fact that you were left with a sense of "Oh that Charlie Croker - he'll never change". The entire film was pretty straightforward, spent going from catastrophe to catastrophe. Which made the ending really sweet, because you knew they'd get out of that, and into another uh.. 'fine mess', and out of that, and into... you get the idea.

Because of the nature of the film, leaving 28 Days Later at that point would have left the film with no sense of closure at all. It would have been a very striking image to end it on, but I remember when it happened, everyone in the cinema started giggling nervously, because they were probably thinking the same as me - "Is that it?!".

Sorry I haven't seen it yet, but I will this weekend... I always look forward seeing Horror films or any kind of films in the cinema. :-D

went to see it without knowing very much about it.
    (knew about a deserted london :p )

was blow away. Its one of the best films ive seen in the cinema in ages. I didnt find it very scary tho for a horror.
Only time i jumped is that car alarm bit :p

Ending doesnt really fit the film i agree and if i could do a spoiler thing id say why but overall immensly enjoyable.

I also enjoyed res evil. guess you have to be a fan to really appreciate it . (licker looked crap tho :| )
This overall was better however and would like to see makers of res evil 2 (if ever to be), have an eye on what made '28 days later' work so well.

I thought it was a great film-very entertaining!!!

Ciallian Murphy very good and also a fox!!!!!

What i want to know is where did they get all those sheets in the end of the film to make the sign?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

Went to see this flick sunday night and for the most part it was entertaining. I just don't think we saw enough folks with "The Rage" or enough gore. The only time i jumped was when the bloody car alarm went off
It's also mentioned that there are outbreaks in Paris and Newyork but thats it..should have said a little more about that imho

damn it how do u do that spoiler thing????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

    Check the Help/FAQ section...

Saw the film aswell, thought it was pretty decent, enjoyed it. Being a big Romero fan I can see the xxx Of the Dead copying, but it was more Dawn of the Dead than Day of the Dead. Especially the part when they went shopping. Weird.

    Gross bit
the guy pushing the other fellas eyes back into his head. Ewwww!

the point of this was that there was no spread of the disease anywhere else it was just rumours...............

It should of been real ... not rumours then the story would of been the best I've seen since I was born.

I think some people need to learn the purpose of the "spoiler" tags.

The "spoiler" tag is there to allow people to talk about bits in the film that might "spoil" it for the people that haven't yet seen the film.

    Clever name, huh?

    Anyway - nice going, brainiacs.

As far as I was aware the reports of the virus reaching Paris and NewYork had been mentioned on both radio and TV right before they where cut off. By this i mean they are not rumours
To be honest ObeyGiant i'd imagine anyone going into see this flick will have a fair idea what it's about. The trailer gives away more then most of this thread IMO

The whole fecking point is that you dont know! It's vague as hell because the survivors have no idea either, they dont know if the whole world is infected or not, or what the deal is.

LoGIE - the trailer does not ruin the ending. This is what I'm talking about. Look at the few comments before I posted my original comments about using the "spoiler" tag.

I really shouldn't have needed to make this post.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭johnnynolegs

we don't know how to use spoiler tags - that is why we don't .... when we asked yesterday how to use them someone said to go to the FAQ/HELP section but it was not there either......

But you know how the rest of the tags work, right?
Basically, you just enclose the "spoiler" bit of yr mail with

tags, and you'll get something
    like this

IMHO (with not a spoiler in sight) this film can be succinctly described by one small word: shìte.

If you want to see this film made properly, rent a copy of George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" (an observation not unique to myself, I know).:(

Clearly the capacity of your taste is limited by the remarkably small brain you have. The movie was excellent.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭johnnynolegs

exactly asuka - this film was well made and well directed and a return to writing form by alex garland imo after the good but not excellent book the tesseract

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭Funky

i thought the whole point of the not showing outbreaks in other places was that they were actually quarinting the uk , i thought i caught talk of that in the film ... maybe im wrong

best film i've seen in a long time though!¬

    Yep, enjoyed it.

Kinda know when the infected are gonna jump out though, which kinda ruins the shock :f

I know it took a lot of influences from older movies but the chained up dude was such a ripoff :]

I wonder whether the english apocalyptic genre has anywhere left to go?

It began with Wyndham and J.G Ballard in novel form, then Threads and Survivors on film and TV, and now we have '28 days' later, paying homage to all the above.

But at this stage, it's all been said, it's all been done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭johnnynolegs

but then again hasn't it all been said and done before???? - i mean in all types of films............

My large mis-shapen head leads me to believe that my brain is, in fact, massive.

Any other pimple-faced loners wanna take a pop at me?:p

P.S. I still think the film was dull as s**t.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 528 ✭✭✭kirn

i thought the film was fantastic, best i've seen in ages.
way better than dog soliders, which i though was fairly crap.

minimal effects needed, just lots of fake blood and contact lenses, but the use of music, the stlye of the cinematography and the underplayed charictarisations of each scene were very well done.

and i thought the ending worked well. and the build up at the start was great.

but the scene at the blockade with the army lads was fantastic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭johnnynolegs

yeah the music was definitely one of the best things about this film and plus this thread has now made me decide to rent dog soldiers aswell ............
