Farewell to LWT (feck off Carlton)

Associated-Rediffusion ran Independent Television in London from Monday to Friday from 1955 until 1964, when the name was changed to Rediffusion London to reflect the fact that Associated Newspapers were no longer involved. For the first two weeks from September 1955 the weekend contractor that eventually became ATV was known as Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC), thereafter ATV. From 1964 until 1968 the Saturday and Sunday contractor was known as ATV London.

In 1968 the Midlands and North weekend contractor, ABC, formed a merged company with Rediffusion to form Thames Television. Thames had its Friday night operation cut back to 7.00pm, when the handover to the new London Weekend Television was made.

Thames and LWT survived intact until the end of 1992 when C*****n took over Thames' slot.

Now the unique point about ITV London is being diluted out of existence. This former Londoner salutes LWT and hands the departing C*****n brand its hat and coat to make sure it gets out of his family and friends houses as quickly as possible.

Puzzled as to what C*****n stands for?

Thanks for the history lesson - someone mentioned Rediffusion to me lately and I was genuinely interested in this.

Ar, then you may like to have a look at the following sites...

www.transdiffusion.org (and associated sites, the main site is for TV historians and nostalgia heads.)

Ah... I remember living in London, looking forward to the LWT logo appearing on a Friday evening. It signalled that the weekend had arrived. Shame to see it go.
