Hey guys, does anyone have any ideas what I could pursue as a final year project? Ideally involving some or all of Java, C++, Oracle, access. (possibly html asp jsp xml and variations too)

Something manageable, preferably "original" - extra marks (The ideas of p2p and IM have been tossed out to us, but it seems most ppl are gonna do those two.)

I've been mulling over a queue management system type thing. All further ideas will be much much appreciated ;)

    It is what it's.

    Hi

In my opinion it is best to deal with stuff that is topical and will connect with peoples daily life and with that in view why not design the electronic voting system in C++ or some other OOP language I heard a lad in our Colege doing it as a fourth yr project this yr and here is an example of the style of question it is a masters question but only in so far as it is masters by how far you develop the idea not the question if you know what I mean so dont let theat put u off the ideas are endless as you could connect it to a DB or design a neat from end to the hard code in C++ etc...

    Best of luck

On the subject of Electronic Voting, if you've done any cryptography as part of your course you may find it interesting inplementing an e-voting protocol. Here's a site with plenty of info about e-voting. Check out the Risks and Reliability section to help you fully understand the potential problems with e-voting. Blind Signatures are an interesting solution.... enjoy :)

How about a password controlled, multi-site, document access system that would limit access to the electronic (copy) documents to those who are "cc"ed with the original document.

I've been thinking about something like this for the construction industry. For example if the Architect wrote to the Contractor and copied it to the Engineer, all three could access the file on a fixed web site from any log in point (IP locking could be added as a security feature). Security would need to be quite good for the documents, but the system would need to be very secure, to avoid tampering and fraud. Ordinary documents could be sent as PDF/ Word/html, but there would also be specialist files like CAD drawings, schedules, etc (some possibly quite large). One particular feature would be that drawings would need to be updated regularly, but the original version kept for reference.

The key objective would be to ensure accurate document dispersal records are kept to avoid disputes (notorious in construction) down the road as to who did or didn't get a copy of a document (in time) and whether documents have evolved and to improve "the paperless office" environment. There could be a server and workstation (secure / non-secure) version of the software. Server and workstation would both demand and send updates.

The above is achievable, desirable, probably commercially viable and provides enough variety to be a usable project. I can consult on it if you want

How about a distributer peer to peer testing application.

e.g. It'd run as a screensaver or something like that, like those cancer & SETI projects.

Basically, you'd need lots of clients for different platforms & people could test what websites look like in different browsers.

e.g. it'd launch the browser go to the website and take a screenshot.

    Kinda like this:
    http://www.netmechanic.com/browser-photo/tour/BrowserList.htm

Only this would be free because everyone running a client would also be contriuting too.

Could be interesting and very useful.

Yea, that's true actually. You'd want to put a lot of work into the security aspect of it in reterospect.

Which page to you want to view.
    "C:\windows\blah\"
    :P

Victor, I like the sound of this. I have a good few questions but not much time right now to ask them. Could I email you or somethin, cos I'd like to get lots of feedback. What's your background? Are you on the architect/builder side or computer systems side of things?

    It is what it's.

It sounds like you want to make a website. Personally I would steer clear of that area - it's too easy and unoriginal.

Have you tried asking your tutor for suggestions?

How's your cryptography? :) It's a difficult subject but you're setting yourself up for a good grade if you do a challenging cryptography project.

hey...ya i def want to make a website...I dont do cryptography unfortunately..I know a website is a bit simple but I would like it as something to build from if you get what I mean..Id like to add to it but I dont have any idea what to add..ya Ive spoken to my supervisor..it was one of them that suggested I do this in the first place..Im a bit dry on creativity at the moment..

Well if you really want to make a website it'll have to be something technically challenging if you want to get any sort of decent grade.

Perhaps investigate things like running skype through a plugin in a website or something like that.

thats not a bad idea..im doing a multimedia subject at the moment for my course which is another reason why i want to do a website..its what im interested in..without sounding too much like an idiot, would doing a plugin be very complicated??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

It might be :) but your project needs to be complicated.

Making websites is simple and in my opinion is not suitable for a final year project (at least, for a 3 or 4 year course anyway.)

The best thing to do is to talk to your tutor as he will have some ideas.

You could also research making some sort of firefox plugin for a browser. Might be something interesting there.

As somebody who has supervised/corrected final year projects, one piece of advice I can give you is don't do a media player.

Unless you can give it one helluva wow factor, and introduce something novel, stay well away. Every conceivable permutation of media player has been done already.

Forget about the technology for the moment, and focus on the topic. Look at all your interests and hobbies and see what you can turn into an application. Maybe consider a mobile version, it's not a big jump.

Oh, and a word of advice, don't go around digging up six-year old threads.

The biggest thing I can say is do something relevant to the type of job you want in the type of industry you want to work in. Read the news and see what problems are facing those companies i.e. fraud monitoring tool in financial services. It makes a MASSIVE deference if you have a project that is very relevant in the interview, thats the biggest thing I regret about my FYP.
