Stupid thread IMHO and represents exactly what is wrong with football 'supporters' in this county. Where as in most other countries support is based on tradition or geographical location we in Ireland on the other hand like to 'choose' a team to support.

This concept even extends to the international side who were the heroes of this country only 4 months ago but now are getting a hard time because the actually lost TWO matches in a row! How unforgiveable. It seems it's a nice distraction to 'choose' to support Ireland as long as they're winning but much more fun to attack the manager and certain players when things go arwy.

But to answer your question my 'favorite' team is Bohemian FC purely because (a) I'm a Dub and live near Daylier and (b) Bohs were the first team I was taken to see when I was a kid.

That's how you should get into supporting a football team. Your allegiances should not be the way they are because you just picked some arbitary team based on them being glamourous or successful during your initial period of interest in football.

How many of you on this thread can claim that you didn't? Not many I'm guessing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,968 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Pigman, your theory can only get you so far, otherwise what could explain anyone supporting Stockport? :D

BTW I support Wolves as I was born there, and Liverpool because they were very good in the 1974 FA Cup final. It was the first game I remember...so I fit your profile!

Uh well then I should support Stillorgan Lakelands, because they are the closest Leinster Senior League team to me.

Yes, because of my location I shall have no alligence to any side other than my local one.

So there ya go. God forbid I support a team other than that closest to me.

In fact because League of Ireland seems to be what you're on about, I'll have to say UCD, because they are the closest to me, but wait, I dont go to UCD. Oh no, we have a conflict.

If I had to pick a LoI team, it's Bray Wanderers.

Why don't you? It might disguise the utter stupidity of your post and the fact that you missed what I was saying completely.

Oh and congratulations on actually seeing Liverpool as recently as in 1995 and Barca in 1994. Your 'support' is overwhelming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

No I didnt miss your point at all.
I think we do have a choice in who we want to suport.
Why should it have to be an Irish team, ya know.

And as for not seeing Barce and Liverpool in past few years, sorry I havent exactly had the time to fly to England and Spain on alternative weekends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭smackbunnybaby

my dads from glasgow and im from cork, hence i follow celtic and cork city.when i started to watch football regularly i liked watching sheffield wednesday because they played attractive football.

but why should people have to explain why support a team, its their business.i always keep an eye on alania vladikavkaz in the russian league because they have a great name!

smack - cool story bout Sedan.

Mike - What is wrong with Stockport??? :D
Cousins live across the road from Edgeley park so I go to see Stockport when I go over to see Utd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

    >all ye scousers

Yop, it would be great if everyone here could actually fulfil the fantasy of being from the same place as the team that they "support", but give it a rest. The likelihood of there being any Micky Mousers on here is quite slim.

Its a bit depressing reading the amount of teams people "support". Its a uniquely "Oirish" attitude of what constitutes "support", buying a couple of shirts every season, and the odd home game is support for some people fair enough. But taking a day off college/work to travel to Cork on a wet Friday night with 30 other people and making more noise than 4,000 is another type of support, shouldn't there be a different (non-abusive) word?

The fact that so many people act like how the international team peroforms really affects their life, only to ignore, but also blatantly INSULT the domestic game serves to show why the FAI accurately and skilfully reflect the views of the "soccer public" that they claim to represent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭RichyX

Wrexham, nothin like supporting a real team, none of the money grabbing premiership bollocks.

    Aberdeen
    Urawa Reds
    Japan
    Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭Ciaran

On my own with this I'd say.

    1. UCD
    2. Juventus

Oh and Bateman, try Derry on a Tuesday night with two days warning and no plans on how to get home with 3 other people, only to lose in E.T.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

I support just 1 Team - Man Utd.
Been a fan since I was 6. Been over 3 times.
Started supporting them cause my Dad does.

He only told me a few months ago he's seen George Best play at Old Trafford.... How did he forget to mention that !!!
