is spiderman the new atari jaguar??cos otherwise i don't see why it's in the "best movies" thread...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 406 ✭✭shep the malevolent pixie

and where's the godfather movies? star wars is *NOT* the best movie in the world, in fact it's pretty crappy really, they all are, but they became a big cult thing and are now revered etc. i mean, don't get me wrong, i enjoy them very much, they're incredibly entertaining, but they are in no way the best movies ever. i'm sorry, i'm cranky today. tired and sick, arg and so on. grr.
    sHep

incidentally, i'm voting for lord of the rings as 'tis the most worthy of the title of best movie ever of the ones you've written. (dear god i'm cranky tonight, i apologise sincerely)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 102 ✭✭Happy CTYI guy

I didn't put in the Godfather movies because they bored me, and i included Star Wars because I'm one of the cultists, and i put in spiderman because it bloody well entertained me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 406 ✭✭shep the malevolent pixie

fair enough. as i said, i'm cranky tonight. :D
    sHep

'snot that they're bad movies as such anyway, it's that they're not the *BEST*. i dunno, i'm tired and bored.

So theses are really the best movies in the world ever, rather they're a few movies that amused you? funny how these threads such as "most influential song ever" and this all seem to fall apart soooo well.

yeah, because i dont think there can be a definitive list of the best movies in the world so i plumped for the list of my favourite movies

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭claire h

    None of them...

    i'll fall YOU apart......
in his defence, it would be difficult to come up with a definitive list of the best movies ever. my god almighty with a chainsaw, my brain hurts. wow....

Hmm, i don't even particularly like any of those films. I don't think these polls can be broad enough, but i am appaled at the lack of kevin smith films in there

its just a poll really. not pondering the meaning of the world or anything. just click on one or don't. not a big deal people. :)

Don't make me laugh, these are all new movies!!!

Also you forgot such classics as Shawshank Redemption and Aliens

    what a list, blaaa

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 102 ✭✭Happy CTYI guy

    1. I've never seen Shawshank Redemption
    2. When i saw aliens, the reception on my TV was really bad and whenever i saw any of the sequels i was appalled by the lack of fright
    3. I dont even know who Kevin Smith is
    4. If this was the list of best movies in the world it'd be a broader list, and i can only remember movies i've seen recently

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 250 ✭✭Plasticman

the best director EVER was, imho, stanley kubrick. the wierdness, the depth, the Ultra-Violence:D, the carnage, the hilarious quotes ("gentlemen, stop fighting!! this is a war room!!"), hinted, nay, blatantly envisioned pedofilia, nudity, and bright lights and pretty colours to cater for those stoned. his movies have EVERYTHING. pity he's dead.

    From that list Pulp Fiction.
But come on, how can you call the thread "Best movies in the World, ever" and then stick in Unbreakable/Blade II/American Psycho...

someone take 'the one' and 'spiderman' and 'unbreakable' and 'star wars' and 'blade 2' off that goddamn poll. i mean, 'unbreakable', really.
    and then put on
    'l.a. condfidential',
    'dogma',
    maybe 'the untouchables',
    'clockwork orange',
    shawshank,
    possibly 'high fidelity'
and 'stand by me' on it.
    ooh and 'pushing tin'.
and old films? like 'breakfast at tiffanys' and 'the great escape' and 'north by northwest' and 'the thomas crown affair'.
'aliens' blows 'alien' was far better.
plus i love 'the goonies' and 'some like it hot'.
'pulp fiction' is the most entertaining of that few; the comedic value and fantastically wonderasmic script just plain rule. all forever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

Dogma? Too much solliliquising about stuff I'd already given far too much thought, coming to conclusions I'd already come to. *sigh* And what the hell was up with Chris Rock? Black disciples, fine, American disciples, no. And Serindipity? More annoying than that Donkey thing in Shrek. [/pretentious arse]

Still, the **** demon was nice.

Oh, and Mallrats is far superior, purely because of its immense re-watchability, dontchernoo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭oq4v3ht0u76kf2

    Good films:

    Office Space
    Wayne's World
    Billy Madison
    Next Friday
    Porridge
    American Pie I
    Loser!
    High Fidelity
    Amerian Pie II
    Road Trip
    Freddie Got Fingered
    Waking Ned
    The Replacements
    Meet the Parents
    Bad Company
    Ocean's Eleven
    Happy Gilmore
    The Waterboy
    Big Daddy
    Little Nicky
    Grumpy Old Men
    Gone Fishin'
    The Out of Towners
    Richie Rich
    The Van
    Austin Powers in Goldmember
    Clueless
    Anti:Trust
    Hackers
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone
    Say It Ain't So
    Agnes Browne
    Die Hard with a Vengance
    Under Siege II
Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinkin' Your Juice in the Hood
    The Green Mile
    The Rock

Each of those movies either made me laugh, or meant something to me... many of them did both. I may have missed out a few "classic" films (The Matrix, Shawshank Redemption et al) but those films just didn't entertain me... so, there's my list of every single movie that is worth my time on this earth.

Yeah I gota say Antitrust was some comedy.... :D

All that html code at the beginning was so cool :p

I'll give it good points for that fact that it was for Open Source, but they did really beat the whole "your a 1 or a 0, alive or dead" thing into the ground.

Got stupid after the first two times it was said in the movie, in saying that though I did buy it as a ex-rental from Extra Vision.

Music wasn't bad in it :D
    Massive Attack, etc

    Rushmore
Gladiator (if only for the soundtrack)
    Citizen Kane
The ORIGINAL spiderman movie (Oh, the hideously dated cheeziness)
    Truman Show
    EdTV
I have to say The Matrix
    Predator
    The Omen
    Panic Room
    The Others
Pokémon: The Movie( I'm not kidding)
Most thrillers that keep you guessing

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 406 ✭✭shep the malevolent pixie

some like it hot- best movie ever.
monty python and the holy grail.
    singin' in the rain
    the godfather movies
    casablanca
    the hudsucker proxy
    and so on.
pushing tin was shiiite. i mean, yeah it had john cusack but even with him it was shiiite. but it vaguely served to entertain. i suppose.
    sHep

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭lordsippa

OK, I'm not going to repeat anything above but...

    BRAINDEAD
Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade
    Twelve Monkeys
    US Marshalls
    Requim For A Dream
    Snatch
    Detroit Rock City
    WAYNES WORLD!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 408 ✭✭purplepolkadot

dear lord how could i forget gladiator, and the indiana joneses, except the second one isn't as good as the other two, a bit dark for a swashbuckling adventure thing.
i like pushing tin, thought it was clever and it has four of my favourite actors in it; thornton, cusack, blanchette and jolie. although yeah there was a couple of plotholes yeah.
the donkey in shrek was brilliant. and i thought dogma was brilliant as a comedy, which is what kevin smith is best at, not opening people's minds and **** like that. you have to admit the "i'll cry rape" and the gay-couple-like relationship between bartleby an loki and the bit where jay gets up and says "what the **** is this? what the **** happened here? who the **** are you? what the **** are you doing? and what the **** happened to that guy's head?" bits are stupidly funny. go on.
and i'm sorry bob but neither interesting nor entertaining were Loser! (talk about blowing monkey), Bad Company (can't even remember that, it was so bland, and that was what two monthes ago?) Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (more predictable than time, with uber-**** acting) Say It Ain't So (one word- ****).

    hehehe...Dont be a Menace....BRILLIANT!

    The Matrix.

    Star Wars.

Bond - Dr. No cos twas the first.
    Goldfinger cos twas the bestest.

    LIL NORMAN!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    hmmm,
some like it hot is a good ol'film.

the virgin suicides.....found it a bit pointless myself.liked the way it was shot and put together and so on,though.

orangerhino(bob, yes?),i would be absolutely horrified at your list of good films,(i mean, all those adam sandler ones??and MEET THE PARENTS??dear god!)but you put clueless in there, and i really really really really really really love that film.*sighs*must watch it again...

monty python and the holy grail is fabfabfab.i eman, there's a charcater called patsy in it!i love people called patsy!life of brian is also quite fabtastic.and wonderful.and soooooo gas.

    i don't like thrillers.very annoying.

edtv and the truman show were a bit shhhhhhhhite,i mo thuairim féin.

and harry potter??the only good parts about that film are the bits the attractive scottish quiddich player are in.

that's all i have to say for now...

Can we stop with the really stupid "Hey, i'm gonna waste peoples time by posting up my favourite movies and getting people to discuss how irritating i am" polls. they've been done to ****ing death.

On the other hand, a topic concerning something along the lines of cinematography in various movies, how well they were shot etc. could actually be mildly interesting opposed to this ****e. so, how bout i change the subject.

    Great use of cinematography:

    Three Kings

Behind Enemy Lines (crap storyline and went a teensy bit overboard on the effects, but damn purdy film)

anyone else have views on this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭oq4v3ht0u76kf2

Neil; calm down... I merely posted that list as a list of films I enjoyed seens as it provided more discussion than "No yuo111! Your list is teh ****emonkey!11"

And I don't care how purdy Behind Enemy Lines was... that as a shocking outrage to storytellers everywhere. Ya gotta wonder about the script writing meeting for that film... we have two stoners, let's call them Bob and Sven...

Bob: I know, let's have an indestructible man...
    Sven: With armour and stuff?
B: Not at all, just pure indestructible...
S: Yeah, able to run as fast as a jeep with 200lb sack on his back...
B: Yeah dude! And let's have him fighting the commies...
S: Yeah, that'll show 'em!! It's real patriotic like...
    B: Yeah...
    S: Yeah...

Then they told the team of monkeys at typewriters to write the script...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

    Black Hawk Down.

What in poo was that all about? It didn't seem to have a plot in the traditional sense, more a few just about coherent sketches interspersed with explosions, big noisey helcopters and blokes going "rar!"

I got the impression, really I did, that the script wasn't so much written as it was sneezed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 337 ✭✭Green Hand Guy

Lord of the Rings? I loved the books but the movie? It was good but not one of the best ever. They cut out too much important stuff for it to be brilliant.

My favourite movie ever has to be The Empire Strikes Back. Who wouldn't like seeing that asshole Mark Hammil getting his hand cut off? Also Darth Vader kicks ass. They ruined him in Return of the Jedi by turning him good in the end. It would have been better if he'd let the Emperor kill Luke and THEN killed the Emperor.

Attack of the Clones was good too for two reasons, Natalie Portman and lightsabres. Wouldn't it be cool if they somehow combined the two? It would make some kind of super lightsabre woman. Oh, and they should have had more scenes with Yoda using his lightsabre.

what important stuff did they cut? mostly all they got rid of was the tom bombadill sh*te and he was just annoying anyway.
