Who would it be and why? The question becomes insanely difficult if you start thinking about the effects of the persons death, ie kill Hitler and the UN might not be set up, Germany be a totally different country, more Jews in Europe, etc etc etc etc etc!

Without thinking about it too much to make my head hurt, Im going for Oliver Cromwell

Whoever invented maths that have absoloutely no relevance in real life but which you are expected to know for all your major state exams i.e algebra and its ilk.How many hours of my life were wasted listening to the teacher drone about x squared divided by 3y multiply by 7i take away 2z to get the value of 7b.

True though, god knows how different Europe would be if Hitler had died before coming to prominence.

I tellya one thing-the EC would have never been set up and we would still be using punts :) Then again the main roads to Dublin would still all be the size of a farm laneway:(

[edited]I recant-there would be NO negative effetcs on the world at all if Louis Walsh and his type were strangled at birth, thereby killing the concept of Westlife,Boyzone,Spice Girls........I could go on all night but Im afraid if I name more than there tunes will envelop my head and that would be disastorous.

Probably the guy who killed John Lennon.

Or on a bigger scale, whoever first thought of making cigarettes fashionable to smoke. Someone else may have done it instead, but on the basis that killing this person would change the world, I'd have to try and stop lung cancer, and all the other smoking-related diseases.

Leave the kid alone:D Its not his fault-when your 3 you will say anything for a pack of Starburst.

Good point Tribesman-Shakespeare is the most overrated author in history. His plays sucked arse. They were badly written, with no proper plot and filled with racaism, including,I think,anti-Irish comments. How the feck does the department think he is worthy of spending 5 years of your life reading?

..and personally I think Shakespeare was one of the greatest authors ever to grace this planet, a man who wrote damned good plays. The fact that his work still exists, in being produced and studied so many years later is testament to that. Meanwhile, what has any of us ever done that will still be around as long as his work? :D

Oh don't be rediculous - you reminded me of some complete moron who used to be in my english class (he left school at the end of 5th year, very smart guy) who once said, out loud to the class, "Da Xes and Ys in mats shud be BANNED!"

He's now driving a dump truck to and from some building site.

There are lots of people you would like to kill, but if you think about it fully you'll see its a bad idea...

Hitler: Lots of people may still be alive, someone more compandent would hae rose to power, there would be less a type of jet engin, rocket, plastic, computers, communications... and so on.

Gandhi: The father of peaceful protest and passavisum (spl)

William Shakespeare: Modren plays and storys would not be where it is...

    the list goes on

What phaxx said. Gopher, you must have no idea of the relevance of algebra to things like engineering and physics. Without it, technology wouldn't be anything like it is today.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

I see Gophers point about the Maths and I know how valuable it is in engineering n stuff.
Me thinks he's on about Maths that wont be relevant to HIM in his real lyfe. I could never see the point of all the algebra cos I knew I wasn't going to use it later on.

    [off topic]change the LC[/offtopic]

Some person in history. The guy who named that Dutch country in €urope.

He left school at the end of fifth year?Wow,what a lazy retard he was! Er,actually most people leave school at the end of fifth year.
Daveirl-Please explain how it has relevence in your daily life..Just to hedgeducate me as I honestly cant think of one line of work that it can be of specific use in(apart from teaching it to a new generation of course-which makes no sense seeing as I dunno how it can possibly be of use,if you get me:) )
Personally Im able to get by in daily life on the maths I learned before second year:) Strangely I was better than mnost of the teachers when it came to things like fast multiplication in my head(say,I could get a sum like 65x15 quicker than the teacher could think it)but the algebra really ****ed up my overall maths talent:(

If Hitler had been killed before rising to power, then wouldn't Stalin would have started the war before he kicked the bucket? He doesn't seem the type to just sit there while there's territory to be had, democracies to be crushed etc :D. We might all be sitting under a Soviet flag right now..

I'd probably kill Jesus, just to see what we'd all be worshipping nowadays. ALL BOW TO THE ALMIGHTY GNOMES! (or some such :p)

    Edit:
Doesn't engineering rely pretty heavily on maths? No maths; no cars, TV's, computers, Internet, planes, ships etc.

don't most secondary students go on to complete the leaving cert which IIRC takes place at the end of sixth year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,842 ✭✭✭phaxx

Yeah, that's what I thought, but we're obviously mistaken, TheGopher sounded pretty certain most people leave second level early and don't complete the leaving cert.

I dont know where you went to school but the LC takes place in all the schools round here when a student is at the end of their 5th year i.e when most of them are 17 years old.End of 5th year as in the summer before they would go into sixth year, which they dont do unless they **** up the LC and have to repeat.
Maybe your schools have compulsory transition year-none of the schools round here do transsition year at all.
BTW what does IIRC stand for? :)

But if your schools do some sort of extra year I feel sorry for you;) But I always thiought that the transition year thingy was voluntary.

Probably the guy who, drunk and dozing off at the wheel, ploughed his 16-wheeler truck through the central barrier of a motorway and rammed head on into the front of an oncoming car, just over eight years ago, ... causing my then girlfriend to be flung through the windscreen of said car and sustain massive injuries only to die a week later in hospital.

To top it all off, she was pregnant. (And yes, it was mine)

To top it all off even further, her father (who was driving the car) went into immediate shock and never recovered from the mental scarring caused by the experience. He has since committed suicide.

    --

I suppose that's not someone "from History" but ... hell, - he's someone from MY history, so he'll do nicely.

Ah, I see - yes, I did 4th year, it's compulsary in my school (and I agree with this) I was under the impression everyone did "6th" year as their final, and some schools just skipped 4th and went straight to calling it 5th and then 6th, but that's obviously not the case.

4th Year wasn't compulsory in my school, and yet we still considered the final year to be 6th, as I'm pretty sure 99.9999999999% (the final 0.0000000001% being Gopher) of the population does.

Considering the mathematical geniuses Gopher's school is turning out, are you honestly surprised that they can't number their years properly? :)

As to who I'd kill in history, given a chance... It'd take a lot of careful research work, but if you could find the single person responsible for originating the inquisitions of the middle ages, that's who I'd go for. That person knocked human science and understanding back 150 years single-handedly.

    Whoever wrote, "It's raining men".

The way I see it, if someone had killed Hitler before WW2, we'd all be dead now. The nukes finished world war II. Since then, no-one has used a nuke in combat because of the immense destruction we had seen in Nagasaki & Hiroshima, and a hell of a lot about radiation, destruction etc was learned from those two bombs. Back then, nuclear technology was crude at best, and comparatively weak.

If they had left it 10/15 years, and used nukes against someone else, say Stalin, technology would have been well advanced, and so, IMO, there would have been far greater consequences - Most of all:
The weapons would have been far bigger.
The attacked country would have counter-offensive nukes.

If the horror of N & H hadn't been experienced, I think the Americans would have been willing to 'demonstrate' their weapon against someone else at some point.

Sorry but I just want to clear something up.I started secondary school about a fortnight short of my 13th birthday and if all goes well will be leaving 3 odd months before my 18th birthday.I personally know people from 5 secondary schools around here(two techs,a boys school, girls school and Protestant school)and they all leave at the end of their 5th year, when the majority are between 17 and 18.
If you dont take the year off for transition year is anybody elses different as its news to me.

    lemme remember...

    1st year...
    2nd year...
    3rd year...JC

    5th year...
    6th year...LC

    Dunno what The Gopher's counting...

4th year [transition year] IS optional.
Nobody calls the start of the senior cycle 4th year.

    Tis in fact 5th year.
